      I know this is an old post but I just put a red dot on my 19x. It’s my first pistol dot. When I zeroed I shot about 50 rounds from 10-20 yards when I zeroed it and the groups were nearly indistinguishable from to 10-20. The main difference was the grouping being ever so slightly larger at 20. I used the same point of aim from 10-20 yards. I zeroed with hollow points and checked zero with ball. I wonder if most of these people are shooting 115 grain. All I shoot is 124 now. I quit buying anything else unless an ammo deal with a shooting class purchase. I’ve noticed a lot more accuracy fluctuations with 115 even with iron sights. I’ve noticed much less accuracy fluctuations with 124. I would also never want to zero with cheap training ammo. People don’t shoot good ammo during training.

      Chances are your red dot is larger than that difference and you’re not a good enough shooter to even notice. Lastly, pistol rounds are horrible. They rely on velocity. Maybe pick something with a little more.

    • @eurly93
      @eurly93 8 месяцев назад

      His point in the video is that holdover can be accounted for, and matters far less than a poor zero. If you're zero is 2 deg. off center at 10 yards it will only be 1" right or left which is negligible, but at 50 yds you will be 6" left or right VS a 25 yrd zero where you would only be 1-2" off left or right. The difference in precision based on balistics is small but the difference in accuracy is large. Fundamentally if you are zero'd at 10yds you simply have no idea how good your zero actually is until you test it at 25+ because a small error in zero is compounded

  • @musicman1eanda

    • @musicman1eanda

      @Gun punch 🧉 If I recall correctly, Scott's rationale is that zeroing unsupported takes into account your natural "pendulum", which really is different from the rifle world where we try to take out as much human error as possible. Do you remember his rationale for unsupported?

    Everyone gets to define thier own task and standards, I have decided that I should be capable of hitting d zone target at 100 yards, now this issue gets a little more complicated at this distance, considering point of aim/impact shift at 100 given your zero distance but also different bullet weight, the question is what do you find acceptable, I like two different bullet weights 125gr+p 145gr+p hollow points, at 25 yards there is a 5 inch poi shift between the loads, 8 inches at 50 and about 10 to 12 at 100, I have found for my standards a 7 yard zero with 125gr bullet gives a max ordinance of about 3.5 inches at 60 yards and a drop of about 2 inches at 100, I can hold high thoracic for both loadings and make consistent hits at 100, your mileage may vary

  • @garyburger8551

    I am not a steady enough shot to use the technique taught in the video, so I had to figure out a way that would work for me. I clamped my empty pistol, barrel down, under a light bright enough to see the three iron sights. I held my head so the front sight is properly aligned in the rear sights. My Sig P365XL has combat sights which mean that when aligned this way the bullet will go to the target where the center of the circle on the back side of the front sight is. If a gun uses non-combat sights the target should sit on top of the front sight. Using the adjustment screws on the red dot sight I moved the red dot so that it sits in the center of the front sight, which is where the bullet would go to. Now the bullet will go where the red dot is which is where the iron sights are also aimed. Voila! The red dot is zeroed without wasting any bullets. The results are good when I shoot the target at the range. I am open to any criticisms of this technique.

    Im a fairly decent shot but when i moved to a red dot i was having a lot of trouble zeroing and wasnt sure what was me messing up or poorly alligned sight. I bought a 9mm green laser bore-sight and now can re-zero any range really fast, like he said "take as much human out as possible" i dont know why more people dont do that. Anyway now i have plenty of fun making the plates sing 😃

    Helps to plug this into a ballistic calculator because shots go pretty low from 30-70 yards, where this is much less pronounced with a 25 yard zero.
    I feel better not having to worry about holds too much and the 25 yard zero does that best for my setup.

      Does not matter. 10 yard zero is ~1 inch high at 50 and 25 yard zero is ~1 inch low at 50. 25 yard zero is right in the middle. Literally does not matter.

    I only shoot for competition purposes with a 6MOA dot - I’ll start with a 15 yard zero on a rest with a Splatterburst so I can easily see the adjustments ( assuming this is a confirm - zeroing a new optic is a different procedure) - then I confirm standing @ 10 yards to see if my grip etc is causing any shift - then I test at 25 from the rest to see how my match ammo is reacting - I’ll also do a group at 5 yards to see any holdover for close in targets - I’m not shooting bullseye or typically any shots over 30 so I don’t get crazy with the cheezwiz - a rested 5 shot 2”- 3” fairly concentric group @ 15 is practically accurate enough a zero for my purposes

    10:38 So do you recommend to Zero at 15 because is the most practical talking about self defense shooting. How does it work for example in the case of Dicken vs the mall shooter in the Indiana mall. Will the zero at 15 will allow 40ish yard if needed? Thanks

  • @ReichenbachEsq

    45 ACP seems to behave differently. I zero SIG Romeo 1 Pro 3moa at 15 yards. Cut holes. Move back to 40 yards on the rangefinder & my optic ready SIG Legion P220 patterns rather low, but windage is good.

  • @archipelago93
    @archipelago93 3 месяца назад

    One advantage that handguns inherently have over rifles is zeroing a red dot, *especially* when the red dot is mounted directly onto a slide with a milled-out optics cut. The greatly reduced height over bore means WAY less elevation point-of-impact variability at different distances vs rifle dots/scopes/optics that usually sit *at least* 1.5” above the bore. Heck, I have a Shield Plus OR with a dot that co-witnesses with my NON-suppressor-height sights. So POI changes are far less pronounced at 5 v 15 v 25 yards than it is for my rifles.
    Granted, I’d still rather have my AR-15 between the two for various other advantages, but just saying! 😂

    Hmm idk 10yard zero has produced acceptable results for me and I’m still holding the platform back a little. 7 out of the 10 shots at 25yards created a group of less than the 3.36” size of the 10 ring. I’m the one the messed up the other 3 shots which made a separate group 2 in 9 ring/1 in 8 ring…my best 25yard b8 score to date of 95-96 pending who’s scoring.
    I’ll try to get out and try 50 yards and report back. Overall pick whatever works for you and know the limitations of yourself and gear selection.
