I remember when this first aired back in 1993. This performance no one knew it but they were witnessing history. This song in particular really humanized Kurt while at the same time solidified his legend. I still get chills every time I see this.
It's an old folk song named in the pines. It's about a runaway slave girl who murders her master. The cold wind blows and the shiver the whole night through is death taking him away. It's demented and awesome

THIS is what MTV used to be , you’d see unplugged concerts of your favorite artists and see them relaxed and chill. So sad this was his last performance. Rip brother.
Nirvana was legendary. Leadbelly was far beyond his time. Two amazing people 80 years apart, found each others beauty. Edit: Cool side note, Kurt played his guitar upside down this entire performance, since he was left handed playing a right handed guitar.
You know whats funny. He was actually right handed but plays guitar left handed. So thought to myself how funny it is he is right handed playing right handed guitar left handed 😂 Pretty sure played the drums right handed though.
Yeah, I knew this one was gonna be good before it even started.😉 Waiting on that switch up. I liked Nirvana back in the day before this Unplugged aired, but I kind of thought of them as just a thrasher, grunge band. A lot of people felt that way and when this aired, we all just sat there with our mouths hanging open. I think this gave a lot of people a new respect and appreciation for Nirvana. They blew everyone's mind with this session. This was December of 93, I believe. By April of the following year he was dead. A lot of people say the set of this show was designed to resemble a wake. Nirvana was one of the bands to start the 90’s grunge/alternative era of music. Kurt Cobain was a tortured soul and, unfortunately, committed suicide with a gun at the age of 27. The world was shocked! RIP Kurt! Such a gentle soul.
For quite some time after his death it was really hard for me to listen to this....myself along with millions of other people my age (I was born in 71) were deeply affected by this mans music & when he died it hurt
Best MTV; unplugged concert PERIOD!! Nirvana didn’t do what everyone else did they didn’t just do their greatest hits acoustically; they used the opportunity to showcase some of their favorite artists and blew everyone away in doing so; kudos to them for once again not following the formula
This performance was 5 months before Kurt took his own life. I was 13 when he died and I always felt (still to this day) that this whole performance was like a "funeral" for himself. It felt odd, eerie, and very melancholy. Still, one of my favorite albums/"concerts" of ALL TIME!!
I really hope, even on your own, that both of you watch/listen to that nirvana unplugged show. Although it’ll be even better after you’ve listened to more of their songs. Also want to say…the vibe from it is like this…..imagine a rocker, a rapper, a country singer all walked in separately to the show and all left together as buds.
Now, u have to do Alice in Chains- Nutshell (MTV Unplugged)...Kurt decorated this stage as he would his own funeral....Then, Layne wanted to go with the same concept... Therfore, that is why people say this is closest thing to watching a man sing at his own funeral. RIP KURT 🙏🖤RIP LAYNE🎶🕊

This MTV Unplugged recording was made on November 18, 1993 and released in October 1994. He shot himself on April 5, 1994, but was not found until April 8. Before that (on April 1, 1994), he had run away from a final drug rehab that he didn't make it through.
Being a teenager in the early 90’s and Being a Huge Nirvana was an experience that was unforgettable. The rise of Nirvana putting the Grunge scene on the Map to the unfortunate Death of Kurt Cobain 😢. You have to watch the entire Nirvana Unplugged show, Kurt really to he soul into there performance. Shout out to Krist and Dave also for their awesome performance 🤘🏼
Thank you for watching till the end. Kurt never got to see what this historic performance came to be, due to his death before the release. It will remain one of the best of all time for many years. Thank you.
That first half was chill, then the switch was flipped. It was pain and anger from there. That last "shiver" he screams gives me goosebumps every time. Their Unplugged is one of the best ever!
I read an account by producers of the 'MTV Unplugged' show that Kurt Cobain refused to play 'Smells like teen spirit' in the acoustic format... Instead, he offered a bunch of obscure songs by Vaselines, Meat Puppets, David Bowie... Past 'Unplugged' shows had the artists do take after take going through their acoustic songs - the best takes were aired on TV. Nirvana refused to do that in 1993; they played their acoustic set only once after rehearsals. They closed the set w/ a cover of blues singer Leadbelly's "Where did you sleep last night" ... and the crowd cheered loudly, even tho they didn't know the song. It was that powerful... Kurt and Nirvana left the stage and the crowd kept cheering for another song. When producers asked Kurt if he could do another song as an encore, he reportedly replied, "I can't top that last song..." Sadly, Kurt Cobain took his own life in 1994, just a few months later... 😪

He wasn't at the women. He was yelling after her. Like "where are you. I'm worried about you... " that's something to think about about this song... when he says where did you sleep last night, he's saying girl... are you stuck in the pines, in the cold? Girl, where are you?
It's in the title about the concert. " unplugged". Literally means acoustic, no amplifiers, no loud noise. If people are doing an "unplugged " concert it is this.
This was from a 1993 MTV unplugged the special he killed himself not long after the special was filmed. I highly suggest you get the DVD and watch the entire concert!! Other songs to check out are heart shaped box, the man who stole the world, Pennyroyal tea, come as you are, all apologies, rape me… many others too!

It's funny when super young people comment on these Unplugged videos and are like "I'm shocked this is chill." The entire Unplugged concept was taking loud, electric-based bands and stripping down their songs. Many times these bands did a couple cover songs for the show... this is one of them. This song is about 80 years-old I think
Several of the songs in this performance were chill. They did covers of some of their favorite, lesser known bands giving them attention they might not have gotten without Nirvana.
it's actually an old folk song popularized by Leadbelly a pioneer of Blues but the lyrics have changed over the years and different recordings. It's most likely a song about a slave owner talking to a woman that he enslaves. It is also know as "Black Girl" One thing is for sure the song is not about a woman cheating. It's about pain but ultimately it's down to your own personal interpretation.
I remember when they did this and watching it live on MTV. It was so unique to see Nirvana and Kurt Cobain in an acoustic setting. He killed this performance. You guys should check out the back story to this performance and see how bad Kurt Cobain was feeling because of his drug use just prior to them going on stage, and then he pulls out a performance and show like this. Crazy… Another dope reaction, keep it up. ✌🏻👍🏻
From the looks of it, we all knew he sang his heart out cuz at the point he was drowning in sadness, especially the last part when he opened his eyes for a sec.
This is 1994. The unplugged MTV series. You should react to the entire Live it was lit from start to finish. This is an improv for this unplugged. It's not in their albums. Cobain was chill he didn't give a damn about popularity. He was like eminem in his debuts, unapologetic about what how he sung. He was a metal head at the start then transited to grunge. He was about 27-28 he died right after this Live.
The last verse brings me to the verge or full on tears. Both from the context of the song and the reactions of people opening to something outside their norm
