There’s a line in the movie that Kirstin says about how every photo she took was a warning she sent home; “don’t do this.” The movie is intentionally light on details because it’s a warning. The details don’t matter. Don’t do this.

As someone who has family who have just fled a civil war, this movie (that I saw ln) very much echoed their experiences - war always devolves into carnage and horror. This movie very much serves as a warning. Whatever the motivations for conflict, conflict always leads to the same place.

The exact reason Alex Garland paired Texas and California was purely not to pick sides. Imagine if he’d made the movie pro-Democrat and made Texas the bad guys. It would not only be biased but would cause further division in the real United States.

He mentioned before not wanting to give clear answers for what its worth. I think he intends to confound and confuse. To disarm us if that makes sense. I believe Garland did an excellent job centering the film around photographers who simply wanted to record history and not create an opinion. It seems like this movie takes place in a completely fictionalized U.S. with a different history to ours and is also more about the horrors of war rather than politics. Of course, this raises the question of why Garland didn't just choose to set the story in a fictional country to avoid confusion on the part of the audience if that was his goal.

Exactly. If there's nothing actually 'American' about the film then not sure why he chose America. This isn't the first piece of media to do a fictionalized version of a country. 'Years and Years' is a TV show that depicts a fictionalized UK heading towards dystopia, but there is very clear context for how they got there and everything makes sense. Seems Garland just wanted to draw attention to his film and decided to choose the USA. If you choose a country, do a fictionalized version of it, but not proper research of that country's history then you definitely open yourself up to criticism.

I can’t talk too much on the film as I see it Thursday but you’re suppose to feel and see the horror of war. There are countless wars going on currently where people who surrender are killed even tho they surrender. I’ve seen videos online of Russians killing ukrainians and vice Versa yet they surrendered. Everyone will feel how they feel but I disagree with the way you're reviewing and critiquing a movie (an art piece) based on how close it is to reality, holding it to the standard of real world politics, as if it's a docu. Not gonna comment on the movie's quality, it just irked me a little bit how you approached your review. I personally don't think a movie whose plot revolves around politics needs to adjust and be made by mirroring the state of the real world we're living in, examining any parallels is of course interesting but the movie should be held to an artistic standard like every other movie, not a sociopolitical one. Anyway, really enjoy watching you Grace! Waiting for your take on the next X-men episode lol always look forward to that every wednesday.
