Very simple and foolproof way of replacing the starter rope. When installing the rope through the hole in the plastic spool
you may try to wrap the end of the rope with a thin soft wire and use that to thread the hole.

To thread the new rope through the small pulley hole, heat the end and using a rag and your fingers, pull over the melted nylon end to form a point. When cool, the point is stiff and much easier to thread into the pulley.
Use a figure 8 knot on the handle for better security

You can overlap two normal knots over each other and pull the strings hard and it should work. Don't forget to burn the end.

You have to "very!" carefully pull the plastic gear up from the spring. It is locked into the inner part of the plastic. But, if you pull mostly vertically, and then stick a pick or other small pointy leverage device down in (without making the spring pop out) you can get the spring unlatched from the plastic gear. Then, the plastic gear is actually 2 pieces, split in the middle, and held together with 4 small screws. Undo the screws, and there is a recess where you can put the new rope with a knot. It is a little hard to get the plastic gear back into the hook on the spring. Just use a pick, and it will slide down after a few tries. If you screw up and the spring goes flying, it isn't too bad to wind back into the metal holder. Just hook it into the plastic gear, and start spinning, until the end of the spring pulls up into the stop. Might take 4 minutes. I'd clean everything when I was in there, as they work so much better when not grimed up. Good luck!
