Are these the only buses in the whole UK with doors opened by passenger-operated buttons instead of the driver? (as is standard in trams)
Only applies for the back door I think. The FTR in York and Leeds was supposed to have it but there were problems with the obstruction sensors on its first day in operation in York.

Cardiff Bus must have thought it would confuse customers who would panic when the doors didn't open, thinking that they couldn't get off. That's probably why it isn't used in regular service. If a notice was pasted on the doors to tell passengers what to do I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. It would give more of a 'tram' feel too.

You mean the ones attached to that small orange box with the picture of the door on it? That should illuminate when the doors are released.
I saw a kid getting off one of these pressing it a few times with no effect (when the doors were already open).
If they were for emergency only, they would be in a sealed compartment or be too high up for kids to reach.
Some of Paris's buses have back doors that are definitely opened by passengers - I have used this myself.
