“Oh Yes We Know” the way Kelly Bishop delivered that line was so well done you can hear the exasperation in her voice and the sadness! It shows what a fantastic actress she is
There’s something so sad about this scene. You can tell Emily and Richard really care about Lorelai, but the relationship is strained because they’re so different and rather than try to understand their daughter, they tried to tame her. Meanwhile, Lorelai ran away with her newborn daughter at 16 years old without telling her parents where she was going and probably causing so much worry and heartbreak. I can see the perspectives from both sides.
Lorelai (and indeed Chris) didn’t want to be part of that world, and she knew no matter what she did her mum and dad would try and control her, to tame her and push her into a life with no freedoms, albeit with privilege. Lorelai was a free spirit who wanted to get and see the world but her pare would never allow that for fear of ridicule and scandal among their peers. She had to get away, not only for her sake but for her new baby’s sake, knowing that her mum and dad would take over and do to Rory what they tried to do to her. Lorelai would’ve been miserable and so would Rory as she got older.
It was really nice when Emily wanted put Rory’s education in first place, and didn’t care about the distance and lack of communication between her and Lorelai
Come to think of it Emily was actually expressing some really solid boundaries here. It really is reasonable to want to be more involved in their life and a once a week commitment is not over the top. Later in the series, she struggles again with being a bit controlling and meddling with business, but this time I am actually a bit proud of her.
To be honest Lorelai and Emily are always yo yo ing. Yes Emily is over bearing and crosses lines but sometimes Lorelai keeps her family away simply to keep them away. There are times when Emily just really wants to be involved and know what's going on in Lorelai's life and she won't give them the slightest chances.
Obviously it was a very good thing as it gave us all the wonderful Friday night dinner scenes ! But I think Emily was 100% correct to only help Lorelai (and Rory) in exchange for those conditions . Those conditions were not exactly extreme or nasty or anything, and simply involved spending more time with her daughter and granddaughter and speaking to them more often, which is perfectly reasonable. I can’t imagine asking my parents for money, while also not actually making an effort to see or speak to them as often as I could.
@@tinybluebug it wasn't just because she didn't want to get married. Lorelai also resented how involved Emily was in raising Rory, Emily had her way of parenting and her and Lorelai didn't agree on parenting methods. Lorelai hated the lifestyle Emily and Richard lived and forced on her. So Lorelai grabbed Rory and ran. Which devastated Emily
Emily didn't have to use the money to get what she wants and hold it against Lorelai everytime Lorelai wanted out of diner. I think it was litty of Emily to do that. If felt embarrassed for Emily to used the money against Lorelai for her own puitty use. If Emily wanted to have time with her daughter and granddaughter then she should have said something inataee of using the money for her own personal gain.
Important little detail, this show has so many, like when Liz went to Lukes and saw that Jess never stole her stash. every Friday night dinner, Lorelei knocks on the door to enter, and at Mia's wedding she lets herself in, Emily was aghast at the lack of decorum, but Lorelie said that's how Mia ran things cause they were family. Every, single , time, Lorelei Knocked, she was communicating that That house was no longer her home, no longer hers. and Emily just thought she was minding her manners, Lorelei literally acted like a stranger or a servant, and tellingly , Emily never noticed.
Now that I'm older 'I don't want her to know I borrowed money from you' is not a great thing to say/keep from Rory. The reason this family is so messy at times is because of money. Everyone be open with each other and less mess would happen. I could understand if Rory was way younger, and not understanding money as a concept. But she is a teenager, she knows money is required for things.
There's something heartbreaking about the fact that the family portrait had been hanging in their sitting room all those years since Lorelai had been effectively gone from their lives. Emily might be cold, but we see enough over the series to know that she does care. It's interesting that she kept that reminder of something that had to be painful to think about just. . .right there.
Oh yessssss thank you so much!!! Friday night dinners contain some of the best scenes on the series :)... The one when they "reinstate" the dinners after Rory goes back to yale is i think my favorite scene of the whole series :D
Oh woah it looks so different than season 3 - the house, the decoration, colours, and Emily (Kelly Bishop) looks so different - they definitely hanged her makeup and her hair of course 😂
I wish you would have uploaded the scene right before this one where the song begins playing and Lorelai is staring at the picture of her younger self in front of the house.
after further thought, I think that because Emily was always friends with the headmasters wife, when Rory applied to Chilton, Emily heard about it, and she talked the school into not giving them a scholarship, knowing that Lorelei would have to grovel to her to get the money. The whole friday night dinner was her idea, even before she stepped through the door. Richard does the same thing with Yale when he gets them to not give financial aid to Rory
Speaking as a child of a single mother, I dont think future generations are really going to understand how hard it would have been to be a single mother in the 90's, its easy to forget the prejudices we once held as a culture. People at the time didnt know how hard it was, older generations didnt know how hard it was, the future ones might not know, how could you know unless you were there?
OMG, you're really doing this, you're really doing a Friday Night Dinners playlist!! Bless your soul
Bless the makers heart lol
I am sooooo excited
Her mother's heart was on the table disguised as a negotiation. It was all so eloquent
There are only plants on the table, right?
Yeah okay.
lovely interpretation. i was thinking the same
even though emily looks good in anything, i’m glad they didn’t keep her hair that way.

yeah, it was really weird, and they had nothing at all to talk, actually they were no family (in my opinion)
Emily looks old in the 1st season or 2 & so much younger in the later years
It’s the hairstyle!
Richard says “I’ll get the checkbook” then proceeds to sit down and read the newspaper 😆
Before he sits down Emily said: On one condition" 🤣
You missed the fact the check will be received the following day? Finish the clip before commenting, otherwise you may say something nonsensical.
"You need money" Richard is the Best 🤣

Hi this is off topic but where can i start the drama? Is this officially like the very first episode? Thank you
@@prettyjeans9003 This is the pilot episode which is the 1st episode in the series

Cool, a new batch! Thanks in advance for investing your time in posting these. I love the writing and the acting and how the characters evolve!!
Can't wait for the dinner when Rory got back to Yale after a huge fight with Emily and Richard)

epic scene
Oh My God ! yay , so glad that ur doing these . Friday night dinners are the best 😁

I watched the show years ago so I may have gotten confused but didn't they kick her out when she got pregnant?
@@haloum no, they never kicked her out. she ran away because she didn't want to get married.

I didn’t realise how much remodelling Emily and Richard actually did of their house. It’s like a totally new house in later series.
Thank you for this! Looking forward to seeing the dinners and more Emily and Richard 💜☕️

I’ve been waiting months for this!!! Thank you!!! You’re an angel. You’ve got wings, baby! (GG reference lol)
Thank you for doing this. The Friday Night Dinners are some of the best parts of the show.
Thank you for putting all of these together! ❤
Thank you for your great efforts! I loved the show.

Omg, this is so cool! Thanks for posting
Wow! Thanks for doing this. I am about to binge them all with some pizza.

You made my day!!
I wonder if Emily would have actually let Lorelei walk out that door without money, was she bluffing about those strings attached? or not?
We need lorelai and Rory because they mostly have the epic dialogue series
yay omg love this!!
I wish you would have uploaded the scene right before this one where the song begins playing and Lorelai is staring at the picture of her younger self in front of the house.

Thank you so much Bless You
Was this (at beginning of the video) the only time we saw what's across the street from Gilmor's house?
Technically yes? But the pilot was shot in Canada so all the sets were different
aww love this
You're the best
I liked the look of the house in this scene. Just seemed much less oppressive
YES OH MY GOSH I LOVE YOU
THANK YOU!!
I love is so much
Can you make a town meetings playlist pleasee?
Good scene
they looked so young :,)
yessss
Why was this recommended to me a couple days after I asked my grandma to help pay my tuition? 😅🤦🏻♀️
Emily likes her area rugs!
who gave this video a thumbs down?... i SAID WHO GAVE THIS VIDEO A THUMBS DOWN
Hi Richard!! We miss you...
Emily Gilmore: "fish on Fridays and human flesh the rest of the week!"
Anyone else notice that Lorelai is standing against a backdrop while at the door?
This was the first ep no?
Pog
its crazy how this Emily looks the same age as revival emily! Its like she got 20 yrs younger after the first episode.
Woah this is not the same hall and living room i had no idea they changed it
The pilot was shot in Canada, so all the sets were different.
Yay
I love the Gilmore Girls. I wonder if Rory had gotten back with Logan full-time after finding out she was pregnant.
So Lorelai used to see her parents only on Easter and Christmas... and she lives like 40 minutes away by car.
And
after further thought, I think that because Emily was always friends with the headmasters wife, when Rory applied to Chilton, Emily heard about it, and she talked the school into not giving them a scholarship, knowing that Lorelei would have to grovel to her to get the money. I doubt that tthat would be every evil if Emily did that.
