When I first watched this show, I thought that Emily was being dramatic with that line about their weekly dinners being the only proper food that Rory eats. Thinking about it after having watched it all the way through, noting Lorelai's eating habits and accounting for the fact that Emily doesn't know Luke or Sookie well enough to factor in their roles in the girls' eating habits, I think that that Emily's assessment was actually pretty fair.
I remember hearing that was a thing they purposely did when the show first started. to showcase how dark and stagnant that world was compared to how bright and ever moving stars hollow was.
