This is one of the greatest songs you ever wrote. People who weren't there will never know how much you nailed the feeling of the 90s recession and subsequent "jobless recovery" with these lyrics. It's key to really understanding the grunge generation.
This whole album rides. I have fond memories of smoking shag and listening to this in home room my freshman year of HS.
Mellow Gold is a perfect album during the lockdown season. Never felt better after hearing it.
I completely agree
Agree. Nirvana's Unplugged gets me through as well.
I just listened to the full album for the first time just the other day. Great stuff!
I love you.
Mellow Gold is a perfect album.
'Give the finger to the rock 'n' roll singer, as he dances upon your paycheck'
Genius.
I remember critics in the magazines were all saying that Beck would be a "one hit wonder" we'd never hear from again when "Loser" hit. I then heard this song not much later and wondered if they had even bothered to listen to anything else he'd released because it was clear he had talent and we'd be hearing a lot more from him.
I fucking love Beck, everyone of his albums are so different and unique. I love how he doesn't stick to the same formula for all his songs, he does whatever the hell he wants.
Indeed
And what are you doing? Using unnecessary profanity on the Internet for attention
@@corey-bird3489ok corey bird
@@corey-bird3489 it's been 10 years you silly billy
And that explains his longevity. The ability (and courage) to try new ideas and not pander to the record company in sticking to a previously 'winning' formula. I can quote an old film noir character here; 'Repetition is death'.
This song give me that 90s, care-free teenager nostalgic feeling. Smoking Lucky Strikes non-filtereds in the rain, walking along the train tracks and going to some crappy, after-school fast-food job.
3 years ago i started smoking lucky strike non filtered thanks to you
@@filipposigismondi4475 I don't know if that's good or bad. :D
@@NoahRobertGraves I can see an old Lucky Strike smoke stack out my window here in Church Hill, a neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia, the former tobacco capital of the world.
you nailed it brother. Except i was smoking Luckys in my POS car with my lowlife buddies, out pretending we have half a chance of picking up girls.
I'm 22 and still do shit like these, but the job i have is not half time, more like... From 5 Am to 5 Pm... It's tiring, but i won't let it take out the young rebel mind of mine
This song is zen. The art of not caring. I think it shaped my world view more than I care to admit. A few more states left to go but I believe I've covered singing this at most public transportation facilities from Virginia to Portland so far.
This is like the unsung hero of the album, except that the entire album is full of songs like this.
I really can't explain it, but this is how I remember the 1990s in a nutshell...
+Shannon McDowell perfect explanation!
same here
Well one thing about the 90s/ the " I pay no mine" attitude was big time the attitude. There where no social justice warriors trying to change the world on every corner. Well frankly I liked it better before the social justice warriors started trying to save the world.
grinhousekiller I know exactly what you mean, and I agree. And too many people are just looking for something to be offended by.
Agreed....this was an amazing album.
This is why I like Beck. He always seems to write some of the most nonsensical lyrics you've ever heard of, almost like he ad-libs his songs, and yet still makes great music. :)
it makes perfect sense to me... maybe your doing too much indica, get on the sativa baby!!! Give the finger to the rocknroll singer as he dances upon your pay cheque, the flames climb high through the garbage pale sky, like a giant dildo crushing the sun!
Beck is definitely the king of the one-liners. “We are aimless, and our target is an empty wall. Always tainted radiation from the factory. no complaints, but I wish I had more time for my brain.”
Nothing nonsensical about these lyrics.
@@ChuckFirefox a lot of his lyrics are pretty bizarre and either actually nonsensical or extremely obscure, but yes, this song is much more understandable and based in reality than a LOT of his other songs.
@@Thorney369 "The has-beens never had it so good."
Mellow Gold = masterpiece
This track never gets old. It's like a Beatles tune. Timeless.
More like a Dylan tune.
Bauhaus too…..
1994 - such a fantastic year for great music!
yes as soon as kurt cobain died music productivity boomed
@@unspecifiied3627 yeah man you have no idea what you’re talking about
The real song that defined the 90's for me.
if you sing in your best beck voice and lay your head to one side, letting your cheek sag, you get instant beck tone. how i spend my days is quite brilliant.
Nothing is something worth doing.
You gotta crush an entire 6 pack of cheap beer too
He never made a better song. And since he made a shitload of really good songs, makes this a fantastic song.
Should probably listen to more Bck then
I agree this is his best song in my opinion, And they never play it on radio so it'll always be the best Because the only time you'll ever hear it is if you search an play it!
Agreed but that one from the mop head dog jumpin over the fence was purty good too
I'll admit I'm not the biggest fan. I think Beck was a pretty good lyricist and songwriter since the beginning, but it's tough to get over how rough his early recordings sound.
Hollywood Freaks is the best imo.
That harmonica break was awesome!
Takes me back to my teenage years in the 90s..Thanks for posting this.
This is one of the greatest songs of all time
Beck, the only acoustic grunge musician?
Days of the new's singer his name escapes me right this second but if we classed them as such he'd come to mind as well.....??
Psychedelic alt folk rap
Post-grunge
@@axemurderer010 I love that band
@@roymarius1634 can't be post-grunge if it was recorded prior to 'grunge'.....
1994, at the time I didn't realise how special you were please come back (
He still makes music fool
Right. Well, except for the baseball lockout.
I love this song, everyone knows Beck is a genius.Just a helluva guy!!
Oh, he apparently needs to respect artistry…
What!? Gonz skating in a Beck video!? How the hell have I never seen this video!? PERFECT!
Me too!?
That’s what I thought blew my mind 🤯
Right there with you guys!
Had to be there. The G.O.A.T. in a Beck video!
it makes perfect sense. He is an artist dreamer , just got signed by a label. He pays no mind now to the crap he has had to take trying to get by in the USA.. Hes on the train and YES he really made it big in the end . my fav loser. love Beck .
summer 1993 fuckin hell time goes by so fast.
wasn't this released in 1994?
A golden year.
@@BlemishesNowYeah Beck didn't blow up until Spring 94. Same time as Green Day. After Kurt died
Como agradecería que Beck siguiera haciendo este tipo de canciones
Beavis - Whats that sound in the beginning.
Butt head - What? that's Satan.
His shirt says "kick me."
+crescentfreshbret It says Rock Me
afriendcalled5 I was quoting what Butthead said about his shirt.
this kind of music doesn't need to be Satanic unless you want it to.
we got whores in the city, we need back up.!
There will never be another Beck.. So much love for this guy and relating to his songs.
Beck said it was a protest song written in a time when there wasn't really anything to protest
I agree--that's exactly why Punk as both the ethos/movement and genre of music died in the 90s. Everybody then thought it was now cool and no longer verboten to comply to the Man and sell out to all the corporate masters, and everybody's still doing it since. :(
...and tomorrow it's back to the grind...
yeah, because people just accepted things in the 90's. "Pay no mind".
To quote the one movie that saw this coming, "Pump Up The Volume": "All the old themes have been used up and turned into theme parks".
I guess it's one of those you had to be there type of things.
LOL XD
Man I wish I could go back to the 90's
I was Beck's (and his wife plus four other people) server at a restaurant I worked at in NYC back in 2013.I wasn't going to intrude on his dinner by telling him I was a longtime fan but at the end of the meal I mentioned I was going to the concert (he was playing with Modest Mouse at a small festival the next day) and wished him a good show when I dropped the check. His wife smiled and asked me a couple questions while Beck just stared at his half eaten dessert. She noticed he was spaced out and nudged him and then told him I would be at the show. He looked me in the eyes for 5 seconds or so and then looked off to the middle distance. It was so weird but also kinda cool. His wife looked at me an gave me an "I'm sorry" look. I got the feeling that happened a lot in that relationship.Anyways, it was cool getting to recommend a wine to Beck and all that.
I remember when this album came out, first loser, then this song were released as singles and I knew this guy was a genius....still is, making some great tunes....
I thought Beercan was released as a single and not this, I never knew there was a video for this, but I'd see Loser and Beercan all the time
@@darienhigh same here, I remember Beercan and Loser were on MTV over and over, along with Heart Shaped Box and Black Hole Sun :) I thought Pay No Mind was the best track on the album, but I never saw a video for it until now.
I can confirm our learned friend is correct however- Pay No Mind was the second single from the album but unsurprisingly it didn't reach the charts (unless 139 in Australia can be considered charting) and as such got almost no airplay, hence us thinking it was an album release only.
Love the random skateboard shots. Gonzo
How does Beck only have 400k subs? I thought it would be substantially higher! Kids don't know what good music really sounds like. Cheers Beck and thanks for the great tunes!
I like the plastic fork in his guitar.
God made the sciences too.
That's his capo!
That is a tuning fork of course...
I think that's a "fret wrap" lol jk
That's locking tuner
what a brilliant lyricist, the imagery in these songs is wild
Saw beck 5 times in DER 90s!
God what a beautiful Video. 😍
This is a great song. This album was one of the best if not the best album available in new music at the time.
That white plastic fork is awesome ! I guess it's there for a reason?
Aos 2:42 tinha visto pela primeira vez um bluntslide, muito estiloso para a época... Ficava torcendo pra ver novamente na MTV, mas era raridade eu conseguir assistir. Então passei a ver lá nos vídeos da 411 e outros...
Geez, listening to this album back in the summer of 1994, working solo evenings at a non air conditioned gas station out on Rt 1 when barely any customers came after 8pm, making $5 an hour and finishing off any Coors Lights the owner left me. This song was me at my summer job at 19, between freshman and sophomore years of college. Fresh in my mind like it was yesterday.
I remember buying this on Cassette in 1994 listening to this song in my basement in Bayside Queens I remember the first time I heard it this is only the second time that I’ve heard it great song great album great memories
I love him. He's so unique
He reminds me of Marcy Playground. Be yourself and the right people emerge.
I just had a perfect day. My mind is relaxed because (this may NEVER ever happen again). My eyes are happy from reading under a tree in a meadow. My hands a re smooth from painting, and yet my hands are gritty from rock climbing. I like that feeling. Now my ears feel that way.
love this song
"He's one of those kids from the gifted class."

I used to drop acid hearing this dude's stuff..good times..
Beck is underrated
I just love how strong the base is in this song. Perferect
You could say this is some mellow gold right here.
That double snare drop with the backing of “Honey” and the dark riffs after. It’s rock and roll man.
Exquisite song.
Video really rocks as well, fantastic editing.
Spaceman cracks me up every time!!!
Just saw Beck in Sydney. So great! And he opened with this song! Apart from fantastic and beautiful music, Beck talked to the audience a lot, got some audience participation going, and was very funny!
Yea... beck really is a ritcheous spit in the eye to modern pop
*righteous...
I listened to this tape on my Walkman, thanks for helping me set the bar low Beck 😅 it helped
Everything about this song is the 90s, the skateboard, his hair cut, and the fork
1:18 I love how the astronaut is like, "aw, what the fuck? This ain't Loser. I'm in the wrong video, mutherfucker."

LMFAO!!
I am now cleaning up the coffee I just shot out of my nose from laughing so hard...
Best comment EVER!

mike spence hahahahaha
Mellow Gold never goes stale after listening to it a lot. I love it.
Mark Gonzales pro skater from South Gate, Ca. pulling the awesome moves, what an awesome video.
i used to get so stoked on this video... it was so rad to see skating on mtv in a time when skating was cool.
just heard Rob Snapff say Elliott Smith liked this song so here I am... and the mixing sounds super Either/Or like. I can hear some influence Elliott must have gotten from Beck, especially the descending bass riff. That is so Elliott.
Cocktails. Volcanoes. Diamonds. Dogs. Rad skateboard tricks. What more could you ask for in a video!
Ahh,Beck!A true classic. The logical sum of 150 yrs. Organic American music.....
The plastic fork in the guitar is a sarcastic play on the cigarettes that “rock stars” would store above the nut. He’s a genius
Van Halen did that. He should be the dictionary definition of a rock star
Back when we had legitimate Rock stars.
maybe he did it randomly because he doesn't care. Maybe U shouldn't care. LOL
I thought it was a tuning fork?
@@GrandChessboard yep 4 tuning
Love 💗 this song, the album is beautiful ❤️😊
As far as my musical taste goes, I outgrew a lot of Beck's material, but this is still Mellowgold to my ears.
Jesus. I never knew there was a video for this song. I grew up listening to this song. Makes a lot more sense now than it did then.
reminds me of 5th grade! beck strong almost 25yrs!
There is such a raw edge to this song I have always loved ❣️ when I hear it always makes me meloncholy ♥️
He reminds me of Marcy Playground for this reason, not just the grunge rock feel. Melancholy yet accepting. I hope what I upload makes people feel better.
This is indeed Mellow Gold....
Beck is so underrated
why is this song every single genre ever???? and why is it SUCH A BANGER??
It's 5am and I'm getting ready for work. This song makes so much sense right now...
Still fresh and raw and gets better by the years like good vine - Beck is a genius.
Beck you are so Gold. . so Gold.
this is in my top 3 beck songs
So happy to find a video for this song that I never knew existed!!
Your lyrics are really out there. Lol. Love it.

my era.. the 90s..
@JippysProfoundings I gave you a thumbs up not because I skate, but because I respect the hell out of the culture of the skating community. Last year on 4/20, myself and some friends organized a hip hop show at a local skate park at the same time as a skate competition. We were rapping while several feet in front of us, bout 15 skaters were doing tricks off of an 8' ledge. 9 times out of 10 they ate shit but they were fucking fearless! And when anyone landed one everyone was stoked! Mad respect!
I was learning to skateboard in grade 11 and I loved this video. These were fun times
the way the cup goes flying at 1:36 is wonderful, lol
So satisfying
Cuando venga a Argentina el 26 de noviembre espero lo toque el señor Beck ❤
gotta love the effort put into the guitar... bit of rope to hold it and a fork in the strings
Great stoner album. Take some bong hits, or nowadays, dabs, lay back and enjoy.
The Legend of Gonz!
Still my favorite Beck song.
This was a great song wish i grew up during the 90s it was the best gen for music too bad i was born in 95
Hace rato no oía esta gran canción... thanks a lot!
This is my favorite Beck song
Best album imho
Give the finger to the rock n roll singer. hell yeah.
i needed this song today
I now see the symbolism in this. The ladies represent the music industry and the skater represents the musician who just wants to make music and rebel against the industry. Like in one part he was skatin on the bar and knocking their drinks off. I dunno maybe I'm just ranting I'm up really late but maybe I'm right.
Nice dude,
25 years good back musics.
