Using Qualtrics can be confusing sometimes. There are so many wonderful options to optimize your surveys! In psychological research, one of the types of questions we use are Likert scale questions. Rather than making each individual statement on your measure a separate entry, I show you how to use the matrix function. Have you ever tried the matrix function? Leave me a comment and tell me about your experience!

This was very helpful and I was definitely doing it the way you showed in the beginning then I thought youtube should show how to do a likert scale the correct way on qualtrics and then I find this video . Thanks !

Thanks for the video! This was a big help, I'm diving into Qualtrics for the first time, and this answered my question effectively.

Good job. I found it easier to design my survey after watching videos. I had previously done the questions one by one in a different survey and its tiring.

Hey I'm just wondering what version of Qualtrics you are using here? Qualtrics Plus? Insight?

This was several years ago, so I'm not positive because it was through a different university. However, when I log in with my university account now, the matrix option for questions is still similar.

You should be able to import these from Qualtrics Certified Library. Where you go to add a question, click import from library, Qualtrics library, Qualtrics Certified Questions, Demographics. Multiple choice question types usually work, but if you're wanting age to be more precise, you can add a text entry question with validation: Add the question and then add validation from the response requirements--content type: number. That only allows age to be entered as a number. You can also specify a minimum and maximum age so you don't get someone who meant to write 27 and ends up typing 278 or something like that.

Hey Lori - Thanks for the video. I wanted to understand the scoring mechanism here.
In my matrix likert table, i have three scales - Yes, No, NA
In the end, i want my survey to calculate score for each block where the formula goes like :
Score = NO OF QUESTION WHERE YES IS SELECTED/(TOTAL NO. OF QUESTIONS-NO OF QUESTIONS WHERE NA IS SELECTED)
How can I achieve this in Qualtrics??

Sorry I didn't see this until now. What I would typically do is when you're labeling the selections, assign numbers (e.g., Yes = 1) and label it 1-Yes. Then, when you download the Excel file for data analysis, you can do the =COUNTIF function and check how many of each were selected. Hope this helps!

This is helping but can I ask, I have 30 items on my likert scale, and each 10 item is to measure specific data then I can include them all under the same one table ? As for the data later on to be entered in SPSS?

You can, but I would highly suggest you make three separate tables, but name the items depending on what construct is being measured. E.g. Interest Item 1, Interest Item 2 (reverse code this), Interest Item 3, etc... when you get the generated data, it will be easier to clean up that way.
