@@Judgement_Kazzy I read a really good book about this entire thing, and man you wouldn’t believe how mad Jobs was about this price of junk. Like my man was actually livid about what Motorola did during their partnership, because he expected and pretty much demanded something truly special (like he was known to do), and as you can see here the Motorola phone ain’t it. You can taste even to this day the giddy excitement and passion for the iPhone in that first conference (even tho the first gen iPhone was junk in its own right), which makes hearing him talk about the Motorola even funnier. No passion at all, and even a sarcastic bite if you listen hard enough.

Even by today's standards, they were great. The W800i was in a completely different league. I got one for an ex girlfriend who messaged me in 2018 to say she had only just retired it :) That little W800i outlived our relationship by over a decade :)
On a related note, I recall being told by a Moto sales guy that the 100 songs limitation was actually a deliberate software bork from Apple who didn't want the Moto phone eating too much into shuffle/Nano sales.

I wonder if the 100 song limit was a carrier demand. It's easy to forget that, at least in the US, companies like Verizon used to have the power to dictate terms to the device manufacturers. They would simply refuse to sell your phone if you didn't comply, and since (even now) most people in North America buy phones from their carrier, this meant you really had no market. The carriers used to make a ton of money on walled garden stores (look up the Jamster commercials if you're too young to remember this) and didn't want to make it easy for the end user to put their own stuff on their phones. The excellent book "Losing the Signal" talks about this.

Yep, I had and still have an e398. Probably the phone with the best sounding speakers I've had. Probably still works, though the rubberized parts of the phone started becoming sticky like 2 years ago and I haven't touched it since. Also the charger port functions in only a specific angle so it's hard to charge, battery doesn't hold much either. But I remember I brought it to school in like 2012-2013 and we listened to music on it with some of my friends back then, somehow it worked fine with a 4GB SD card even though it's not supported.

I remember that with 100 tracks, it took a lot of time to launch iTunes, and I remember being annoyed that it was so easy to accidentally hit the music button and have to wait for it to load. I really wish you managed to play something over the loudspeakers! Mine came with a pretty fun soccer game and a The Sims-like life simulation, the latter was the first game I played that had this mechanic where it tracks the system time to advance the in-game time, which was a brand new concept at the time for this form factor. Really cool stuff! I actually stopped using it because I bought the iPod Nano, so I guess Motorola's CEO was right haha
