People need to realize, heart rate is relative! People think the absolute numbers mean anything, they don't. Only in relation to max and resting HR. 100 bpm might be at 50, 60 or 70% of someones max, does not mean that person might be better trained than someone who has 140 bpm at same effort, as that person might have a higher max HR.
Seth, I’m not a catholic myself but I would love to any faith based content you might have to share here and there. Hearing about others’ faith is always a positive experience!
That is just magical seeing the elk! I remember visiting my grandfather in Norway when I was only 10. We went up into the mountains to our little cabin and one morning in the field by the cabin came a herd of about 50 reindeer wandering along. That moment has stayed with me my whole life.
Love the “Timex Generation” reference! I grew up just doing what my coach told me to do and by feel. Still do but starting to use HR as a cross reference. Kind of pyramid. I’m starting my slow 2023 build up. Love when I get to the point where I go out and cruise a good pace and the heart rate is under control! Exciting!
Great video. Today was my first run in over 6 months. I quit cold turkey after my last race in July, partially due to a slight injury from that race. I’ve noticed the last couple months I just haven’t felt “good” and decided it was time to get back to doing workouts, because I know being in shape helps me feel great mentally and physically. Keep up the great work and good luck on your next race!
Just a beautiful scene on your run! The Elk and the location match perfectly with your music selection and your inspiring words “let’s go Tommy!!!”. Thank you for sharing that moment.
i went out to the boulder area this past july and made it out to mags on a thursday evening. i am from the midwest (so not altitude lol) and ran mags on my 6th or 7th day out there. the run itself was 15 miles at about 6:45 pace on that road. i felt fine, arguably great during the run, but afterwards i came down with a huge spell of altitude sickness, throwing up several times that night. mags is legit, and it will find a way to wreck you somehow, even if it doesn't feel like it during the fact.
Amen, Seth! Racing tomorrow in the Navajo Nation portion of the Grand Canyon and it will be my first time running on snow-free trails in two months! It helps to shift focus from miles to hours on your feet so as to include snowshoeing, hiking etc to the usual trail- and road-running mileage
Watching your video this morning motivated me to do my 6 mile run today. It's 15 degrees with wind chill of -3 in Boston area. I was going to skip it but then watch you run 30+miles in the mountains. Thanks SJD!!!
Low Heartrate per se does not mean much, a lot are getting this wrong. You also would need to know the max HR in order to get somewhat of a meaning out of it. Lionel Sanders is another example for that. His HR is ridiculous low, even compared to Seth. But His max HR is somewhere between 150 und 160 he also said. So 120 is somewhat higher than for a person who could get to 200. And every max HR is different for everybody
QD Being a female, and having asthma and high BP, my HR has improved, but is always much higher than MAF. I try to do 1 MAFish run per week, but it's frustrating, so I do the rest by feel, breathing through my nose and being able to talk... and often in the 150s. I love the speedwork where I chuck it and just go, with HR in the 160s. Your HR is absolutely amazing for that output!
As Rumi advised: "Let the beauty of what you love be what you do." Your love for running shines through in each of your vlogs. Keep doing what you love, Seth James DeMoor, and spreading the beauty of your passion to others!
I was in to the heart rate training from the beginning. Now i’m more on pace and feeling. I have relative high heart rate. But it has been a good indicator before i’m getting sick or stressed to maybe take a day off or slow it down some days.
QD: Started "seriously" running in summer `21. According to Garmin my RHR for `20 = 59 BPM, '21 = 55 BPM, '22 = 52 BPM. First marathon was October `21 @ 4:20:02 and pace of 9:51 with avg HR of 166. Second was in April of `22 @ 3:50:05 and pace of 8:45 with avg HR of 162. Third was October of `22 @ 3:43:20 with a pace of 8:27 and avg HR of 166. Seems like decent improvement, looking to get much better this training cycle. Need to shave 33 minutes to qualify for Boston...which I hope to run when I'm 40 in 2025. I do train by heart rate.
QD: after three years of running, my easy pace is about 30s/k better at same HR and my HR when running at 'threshold' has come down like five or more beats. Doing 20-50k/week mostly easy.
QOD: I’ve definitely noticed a difference in my heart rate since I started running again. I tend to ride a little higher during running, but what some would feel as working actually feels easy and comfortable to me. My Dr was concerned at my low 40’s resting heart rate until he found out I was a distance runner and that this was normal for me.
Seth, you’ve probably talked about this before, but can you share you sleep routine? It’s obvious that you get up early every day but how many hours of sleep do you get each night and do you nap?
My max HR has dropped in the last decade, more than would be suggested by the usual 1bpm per year. However at 56 I'm still improving my distance times over that same decade.
I ran and cycled for years without a HR monitor so I'm not exactly sure how much i've actually improved. I know my resting HR went from 60 to the low 40's though
Woo! Winner winner! I’ll email you the address! I’ve noticed a change in heart rate this training block. I run by feel and felt my paces getting faster but feeling easy. So decided to run with my heart rate monitor to see and was spot on. And noticed my resting heart rate has dropped as well! Always fun seeing some actual proof to gaining that fitness.
A: Do you see that bunch of elk? B: No, you mean a herd of elk. A: Of course I've heard of elk. B: No, an elk herd. A: Why do I care what an elk heard? I got no secrets from an elk. Actually I just looked it up and it's a "gang" of elk, which is way cooler!
I think something like BPM is going to be relative to a lot of things including individual cardio fitness level, hemoglobin, mitochondria (ability of the muscles to efficiently use O2), a person's weight, training history, etc. High end cardio athletes are going to have lower BPM even at rest (like low 50s) due to all the factors I just mentioned. And so to answer the QOD definitely can see lowering of BPM over months/years of improving fitness levels no doubt about it. Strava is a good resource to look at old runs and from years ago to see changes (assuming better fitness as time goes on).
Also thought it was hilarious how you said the "timex generation" haha. I'm right there with you. I went back to my timex because I was just tired of all the data which I didn't find all that helpful. At the end of the day it's all the same information ("sensory" vs HR) and doesn't change how you feel or perform. HR training may help super high end athletes but I'm not sure it really matters much for the vast majority of people.
This is a great video: the music, the POV of nature in that particular time and place, and those self motivating phrases to push through and finish. Awesome.
My heart rate stays pretty high during my runs which always frustrates me. But then again it stays quite low even when I’m running around work so I guess I’ll take it.
Run slower my friend. Get comfortable just bopping along. Scott Jurek said it best. “Train at your current fitness level, or slightly above - not where you want to be.”
Qd: I think I have seen a change in heart rate since I’ve been running more. It is much lower than my fellow classmates. Nothing compared to Seth though!
You must just be a cyborg, or maybe a blue whale! I think they’ve got like single digit BPM. 😂 Killin it out there! Thanks for occasionally like my Strava activities.
Just tell these people who don't believe you or a jealous, you're flat-out in shape. Your smaller guy, you're in great shape, that's to be expected :-)

Thoughts on Sage Canadays parody ‘VLOG’ ?

Only drug dealers and Seth carry a scale in their car!
Lol😂

I was watching this at the gym on the treadmill screen! That was beautiful to run to!
i went out to the boulder area this past july and made it out to mags on a thursday evening. i am from the midwest (so not altitude lol) and ran mags on my 6th or 7th day out there. the run itself was 15 miles at about 6:45 pace on that road. i felt fine, arguably great during the run, but afterwards i came down with a huge spell of altitude sickness, throwing up several times that night. mags is legit, and it will find a way to wreck you somehow, even if it doesn't feel like it during the fact.
Why not use the treadmill under these challenging weather circumstances? I've found it to be a great way to get my workouts done.

Gorgeous scenery. So cool to see the herd of elk cross in front of your path. I enjoy these 100% running focused videos.
I appreciate your opinion on HR and fully agree that mental and other physiological aspects play important roles into race day performance.

6:10 Seth, you had a mini David Goggins moment😂
I thought the same thing! Let's go Tommy
Loved the Elk!!!! Beautiful scenery!
he divided the poor herd.
Me too but wished he would have stopped to let them cross.
Two questions… will you be offer DGR hats (( stocking & trucker ) anytime soon? And what shoes will you be wearing for your trail 50k?
QD: after three years of running, my easy pace is about 30s/k better at same HR and my HR when running at 'threshold' has come down like five or more beats. Doing 20-50k/week mostly easy.
so far, 44 CUs have signed to support Mark (CU coach), Seth, what say you?

38 km, 638 m, 4:14/km, in wind in winter is impressive.

Why did the elk cross the road?
I wished my HR would stay that low. Good run Seth! Love the Elk!
Were those the La Sportiva Jackal 2 boas I saw lying there?
what did the title of the video have to do with the content?

hey seth! any affordable sunglasses you would recommend? idealy between 40$ to 100$

keep up the good work seth
Speaking of breathing, still would love a video about breathing as a runner!
Amazingly low HR for 24 miles at 6:45/mi and 8000 feet altitude
This is a great video: the music, the POV of nature in that particular time and place, and those self motivating phrases to push through and finish. Awesome.
Seth we Miss u😢❤
Will you comeback?😢❤
My heart rate stays pretty high during my runs which always frustrates me. But then again it stays quite low even when I’m running around work so I guess I’ll take it.
Seth my heart rate is 170 during easy runs, how do I get my heart rate lower to run faster
Run slower my friend. Get comfortable just bopping along. Scott Jurek said it best. “Train at your current fitness level, or slightly above - not where you want to be.”
Change brand of coffee? 🤔😆
Lovely elk!
so lovely he divided the group

Dancing with wolves meet running with elk.
ANy data point you use, Seth is a beast. Inspiring!
When you picked up the shoes and opened the microwave... I thought we were going to explore some strange microwave your shoes to go faster subplot.
I had the same thought, lol
Thank you for the shout out at 6:10. Fantastic
You must just be a cyborg, or maybe a blue whale! I think they’ve got like single digit BPM. 😂
Killin it out there! Thanks for occasionally like my Strava activities.
Running with buf.. I mean elks.
White trail shoes....what are you thinking Salomon!
Orale vato. Manteca mi pan.
