    So many people in the comments that simply don't understand how this works. I feel for you guys, I really do. He shows you how he forced the song into his head through out the day and you're still calling them actors and stooges. Funny.

      Except that all it takes is 10 seconds of Safety Dance or any other catchy stick in your heard song shortly before Derren approaches him and the whole "trick" is moot.
      For a lot of Derren's stuff, the trick is making you think its a trick.

      Right but all those things are very convenient and easy to fake. Plus as said below, any other song could take that out of his immediate memory. He'd also have to know the song, and the producer wasn't doing a very good job of whistling. I bet if this experiment was repeated it would have like a 60% chance of working.

    It's actually a good thing that we can't read each other's minds because we'd probably be appalled and devastated at what we found; mainly at the (moral and intellectual) shallowness of the average person's thoughts and what that means for humanity. But that shallowness is what makes people so easy to influence.

    • @airborne486
      @airborne486 8 лет назад +10

      I think the exact opposite, if given everyone has the ability, we would find solace that were not alone and everyone has thoughts from the profound to thoughts of the extremely shallow. what makes people able to be influenced is a millions different things. One as, im going ahead and guessing by the nature of your comment, you whom I believe believes yourself to be intellectual has to see the irony in your own comment on the shallowness of it, hope you can handle this as a lot of people wouldnt be able to, take care

    • @KingOfTheInterWebs
      @KingOfTheInterWebs 7 лет назад +3

      I think at first we'd all be horrified but as everyone came to terms with the fact that everyone's brains are screwed up in some way it would probably be more beneficial than not.

    • @user-yp3oj5se1i
      @user-yp3oj5se1i 4 года назад

      It would be a stepping stone onto asking why we have the thoughts we have. For instance everybody would know how many sexual thoughts and what exact kind of sexual thoughts were had and by which people and at what stage in life.
      The negative/inappropriate thoughts of the supposed more educated/decent people would be revealed. We would then want to remove negative sexual references from tv/internet media and we'd then see the rates of rape and other negative sexual behaviour decline.

    • @dm0065
      @dm0065 2 года назад

      6 yrs on, but what the heck. I think if we could hear each other's thoughts it would be gibberish. We don't think very similarly to the way we speak imo. Odd words and disconnected phrases, sometimes conflicting, and layered on top of one another. Sometimes we might be rehearsing something we intend to say, or replay something we did say, so it "sounds" like we have an intelligible inner voice, but even then that's just a top layer. There's more thinking going on under that, at a lower volume. Really look at how you think, you might find, as I have, its mostly just impulses, instincts, fears, desires, and emotions that we try to make sense of. Like a decision-maker presiding over a meeting and taking suggestions on what to do from round a table of barely-known and often untrustworthy advisors.

    We did something similar to this to a guy i used to work with. I am a software engineer so we as a group installed a very simple app that looks through a bunch of photos of coca cola cans and logos and flashed them on the screen for 1 or 2 frames of the monitor every so often. The guy we did it with eventually bought one after never having bought one before. He genuinely didn't know why he had the urge.
    As odd as it is, it works and it is how marketing is done when done well :-)

    What if the subject didn't know the name of the song or had never heard the song before all the subconscious environmental influences? He could have heard other songs throughout the day of which he knew the names. One is probably more likely to remember, in this case a song, when the song is listened to involuntarily, if one has had prior exposure to it, and moreover knows the name of it.

    I am not naïve enough to believe that Derren Brown is posting these videos himself, and I suspect that they are being posted in his name by a lower-level employee (perhaps an intern) of his manager's firm. Nevertheless, I have a suggestion for him (them).
    For the title of a show, he should use *The Wonders of the Invisible World*.
    I didn't think that up, and the title is in the public domain. It's the title of a book by Cotton Mather; his account of how, under his prosecution, 14 women, 5 men and 2 dogs were publicly executed by hanging in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, for the crime of witchcraft.

    You know, once at work, when a coworker was giving us the night's tasks and asked if there were any questions, my old manager, totally unprompted, said, "Does that make sense, John?" I think she asked me in particular because of all the times I didn't understand previous tasks and demonstrated my slow, limited learning ability. That was the night I struggled and delayed getting something for a coworker and the said manager had to help me find it. I think she thinks I'm...well, whatever is a nice, more respectful word for "stupid," since she surely wouldn't use or think that mean word, especially consciously. Would that explain her "random" question to _me that night, no one else? That she thinks I'm slow?
