  • In episode 21 of 52 Masters, William Christopher Ford (while blind-folded ) trains with Sensei Joshua Loya, who happens to be 100% visually impaired. Very inspirational interview follows. Enjoy!

All of the 52 masters videos by William Christopher Ford are excellent viewing and educational but ironically this video with sensei loya is compulsive viewing. As japanese ju jitsu students Shinpi Izumi Dojo we occasionally work blind folded, dark rooms, visually impaired, as touch and movement are important to us, but too this Master, darkness is his all, thankyou for sharing and inspiring us all

Absolutely can relate. I was blessed with the opportunity to teach Wing Chun to a blind man. He flourished in the art due to the tactile nature of the art.

Saw the video of you guys on art of one dojo came over here and saw this...this blew my mind dude! This makes me think that maybe the old legends of blind masters are real. and the old masters blind folding their students for a year to enhance their skill. This video shows me the reason why you might want to try that

This is actually insanely thought out. When we (my gym) has our fight team practices, I often find that my eyes are closed when we're on the ground. Not particularly because I pretend I'm blind, but because I wear contacts even when sparring/practicing, and I don't want one to shoot out of my eye when we're that close. Joshua Loya's self defense system here is genuinely practical, and I'd recommend any blind individual to sign up at his gym.
I really wish I lived in the area of his gym/dojo (sorry idk what its called. I've never practiced traditional martial arts). He seems like an awesome person to talk to, and I think it'd be awesome to be his friend.

I know that many martial arts got techniques to develop better tactile Reflexes, because it's quicker than eyesight.
His whole martial art is based around this principles. Love it.👍

very very inspirational. I am also totally blind, and I teach krav maga here in BC Canada. Good to know there are others out there teaching and training and passing on the knowledge of self-defense to others who are blind.

This is the second program I've seen today. After watching the first program, I thought that it would be extremely frightening and depressing to lose your vision. Josh's perspective that deciding not to try and save his vision made him free was completely different from most people's perspective. It just shows how many perspectives there can be to a particular condition.
This is the most inspiring video so far. Thank you Josh for the positive energy you sent out through this video. It's amazing how someone in a video can improve your own outlook on things. You are a shining light in our community!!!
WCF, you seem visually moved after your conversation with Josh!!!

haven't trained with a visually impaired student but have had a student that was deaf. Communication was very hard for many months but we both adapted. A learning experience for the both of us. I think we both came out of that one better students and instructors.

What better way to finish this series than to make a video with a 52 Blocks/Jailhouse Rock instructor for the 52nd video!
Also, consider these masters for future videos: Sifu Redmond- Wing Chun, Ip Man -> William Cheung lineage.
Kru/Master K, aka Elbow KO- Muay Thai, Elbow style.
    Oumry Ban- Pradal Serey.
    Kuya Doug Marcaida- Kali.
    GM Bobby Taboada- Balintawak Kali.
