The GB142 was actually made by Nefit in the Netherlands. Nefit was bought by Buderus, Buderus bought by Bosch. As for the UBA controller (that blackbox with the thumb screw) the proper way to secure it is to push it in with your hand first, then tighten the thumb screw. Behind that UBA controller is an 88 pin connector - YES that is 88 different leads that all have to be firming connected. Based on the corrosion inside the housing - check the termination/fresh air, could be cross contamination. The cross contamination normally effects the small control board (not replaceable) in the blower assembly, causing intermittent 3L codes.
The GB142 is no longer offered, replaced by the GB162 and the Greentherm (which you installed in the veteran's home the other day). Just a small side dish to help feed the people!

I can send some pics of failed heat exchangers on Gb142’s. From lack of maintenance. By the looks of the corrosion on the bottom of that cabinet coming from the unions to the supply header, that boiler is not long for this planet. The metal loss that’s piled up in the condensate trap is from the heat exchanger. They factored that into the design but if you open up the bottom cover you will see why. Its deteriorating from the heat exchanger. Needs to be brushed and flushed yearly. A little white mineral oil helps. We have a lot of them in CT. A lot of them have been replaced already with Bosch after the purchase of Buderus.

Wall hungs seem to be great for service techs and manufacturers to sell more parts, but not the owner. Unless you are really tight on space, I'm not sure what the attraction is, the little bit of fuel savings is destroyed by the high maintenance and repair costs.

Hi Mikey, first thoughts when you mentioned "some kind of weird boiler" - Bosch Partner: Buderus, Nefit, Junkers, Sieger...
This boiler might start leaking fumes right underneath the Navien Plate, where the front and the side of the burning chamber are only sealed with silicone. Can easily be resealed with heat resistent silicone. Anyway there is very little electronics underneath the hood, thus no possible cross contamination. These GB112/142 run like a beast.
Bosch has a decent video on GB142 cleaning/service available on youtube. Might wanna consider giving it a good clean with some white mineral oil when replacing the fan assembly.
The typical blower errors are 3L and 3Y.
3L: broken electronics on the blower PCB. Some of the electrolytic capacitors became old and out of spec. Can be replaced.
3Y: red rubber suspension are worn,. The spacing between speed sensor on the board an fan axis is shifted. Can be fixed with small portion of cable tie underneath the rubber plugs to bring fan assembly back to old, upper position.
Back here in Germany and the Netherlands you can find refurbished blowers for nearly all Bosch boilers around ~150-200$.

Hi Mikey, I fixed one of those 5 years ago, broken igniter. Changed a few other parts and got it going for two more years until it was time to replace. Got the last one that my distributor had. In my case the manual was right there and I just had to read, be aware of my surroundings and do what we do.

I’ve had issues with the boiler gas line which was under recall and the headers. So if you ever see one again spray some soap bubbles were the gas line comes into the boiler notorious for leaks.Ask your rep for a service book. It’s thicker that the holy bible but it has all the answers. Keep making stacks!!

The termination venting looks wrong. The exhaust should be periscoping up and the combustion air supply should be terminated in a downward 90. With a minimum of 12” of separation. That termination is likely what has lead to the internal rust we saw. Budearus is lovely equipment. Over engineered for sure but easily repaired. 👍👍🇨🇦

I would worry more about the control box with the thumb screw. I believe it was vibrated by boiler action and did not send the correct voltage to the motor. When you tested and got 120 v you had tightened the screw. I would want to know what that box controls and how. Can't believe Bosch would use a thumb screw like that.

I have the same unit and have been recently having issues. The circ pumps are circulating but the boiler isn’t heating. The view window shows the pilot light off but all three zones are calling for heat and pushing water but the pipes are cold for the zones. It shows no error code. I shut it off then turn it back on and the flame ignites and the heat returns. This was a bi weekly occurrence which now is happening almost daily. Called the HVAC company that installed it and told them the issue and mentioned it’s due for service. They came and serviced it and said that may of fixed the issue (lots of corrosion on the fins of what they said was the heat exchanger that they attempted to scrape off). I’ll be calling them again tomorrow as the loss of heat has become more frequent. Boiler was installed in 2010.

    • @scottwillis5434
      @scottwillis5434 Год назад

FWIW, our GB-142 went intermittent and it turned out to be the blower; if it runs a bit slow, the cycle of:
      - Purge (blower only)
      - Igniter on, turn on the fuel gas:
      - If the blower is normal speed, enough fuel/air makes it to the combustion chamber to light
      - If the blower is a bit slow, not quite enough fuel makes it in; it times out and repeats the purge / ignition attempt
I tested using an unlit propane torch in the inlet *at the right time* to give it a bit more fuel; it lit, showing that it wasn't getting enough fuel (which was the blower not getting it to the combustion chamber fast enough to avoid the timeout).
Can also be plugged up by 'lava rock' residue from the propane; supposed to clean every 6 mo with 50/50 mineral oil (Health section of supermarket) and water. Make sure you have replacement gaskets on hand, probably a spare igniter, and keep the ionization rod and igniter clean.

These are great for our trade, has life span of furnace due to aluminum heat exchanger. All the energy they save can be given to us to repair it after 6-8 years. Brand is irrelavant, cond. boilers are very expensive, plagued with intermittant problems, parts over-priced, will NEVER pay for themselves. On top of that they are not maintained by customers ALL making them highly profitable for contractors.

( gas & power prices in 10 year are incrasing like crazy here in Europe ) ..

This is true of most HVAC equipment that touts "efficiency" as the "raison d'etre." Usually, this is caused by a government agency attempting to transfer more cost to the consumer while being able to tell constituent advocacy groups that they are 'saving the planet." Government is their replacement deity instead of God, and they worship at the altar of government. The consumer gets to pay for that worship.

Buderus use to make only oil burners in the past .. and thet lasted for ages . Then they bought Nefit ( dutch company with good reputation in gas boilers ) . And then Bosch bought Buderus ( already owning junkers ) . So the newer systems are more junkers inside the nefit inside ( or a combination of both ) . Lifetime of a condensing boiler i would say 10-15 years .. if after 10+ years you need to replace parts .. better replace the boiler to a newer model . ( my GB162 is 13 years ..and had some small issues .. rubber seals on the circulator leaking .. 1cm water inside .. so some rust of the case ) . For now it's running fine..combustion test done all ok ( i actually NEVER really serviced it in 13 years.. with the money i would pay for yearly service i can buy a new one almost here in Belgium .. ) The water heater thank 160 liter connected to it . .i had to replace couple weeks ago ..tank was leaking .. i never replaced the anode in 13 years ...

There are chemical and fisical reactions between the two metal s, and it end s with leak s and serious problem s with the boilers !!!
