    This video just saved me $$ from calling my boiler guy. I had no hot water & my Beckett motor had no green light. I flipped the power switch on & off on the boiler, I held the red reset button, checked the circuit breaker, checked my oil levels, etc. Just when I was about to make that pricey call, I watched this video. Had no idea the emergency switch controlled the boiler, since it's located in a hallway away from the boiler - and it was off. Thank God for people like you on RUclips!

      Oof. Rest assure, you're not the only person who's done this and called out an HVAC/Plumbing tech. There are switch guards you can buy online that make it so the only way to flip the switch is to grab it with two fingers so it doesn't get turned off by accident.

    Saved me $250 for service call, "someone" had switched the heat setting to cool on the thermostat. No heat in the apartment, 7 degrees wind chill outside. The pellet stove backup wasn't doing it. I suspected the zone pump had failed...then I watched your video....thanks so much!!!

    Very helpful video for a new homeowner.
    I have a natural gas heater and literally just had a plumber come last night who ended up replacing two zone switches. I didn't even think to compare the pipe temp pre and post switch! Doh!!
    But, I did learn about the emergency on/off switch and will label it properly now.

    I can't thank you enough. I had gone through the re-setting of my Vaillant boiler including adjusting the pressure. That didn't help. Then I started watching your video and your first point, about the thermostat (even though I thought it was very basic) made me look at my (dial) thermostat. I always thought that our thermostat was non-functioning i.e. not related to our boiler which we installed when we moved in 10 years ago - For some reason, because each of our radiators had their OWN THERMOSTAT, I thought that the thermostat at the stairs was related to an old heating system. I ran downstairs and saw that the thermostat was at 0 degrees. I turned it to 20 degrees and our heating started working!! I am so thrilled, so thrilled that I don't have to find someone to fix it and so glad that I don't have to fork out what I thought could be a lot of money. We'd been without heating for 3 weeks. When my husband got home from work he said that, like me, he thought the thermostat was old and not working and he had changed it to zero for some reason. Thanks again for saving us so much trouble, and money for the call-out.

    Zack I want to thank you for your warning about CO2 . After your warning I went out and purchased a combination smoke and Co2 detector just to be safe .Well it went off at the coldest time of the night . I hadn't done anything wrong with my DIY repair. I pretty quickly found a hole That had rusted through the vent pipe . It was only the size of a pencil eraser but it was enough to trip the detector. Obviously it was an easy repair to replace that section of the vent pipe.

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  5 лет назад +2

      Good thing you checked! I am a firm believer everyone should have at least one CO detector in their house. It's a misconception that CO leaks will make you sick first, there can be a small leak like you had that creates a dangers and very unhealthy situation and it will eventually become deadly.

      @Doing_it_right_the_first_time 4 года назад +2

      JAYJAYJAY53 Hello Jay Jay… If you had such a small hole in the vent pipe and it still tripped the CO detector that means that that burner is making a lot of carbon monoxide so you should really have somebody come and do a “combustion analysis“ of it and probably find out that the air inlet setting for the burner is probably incorrect or something else to cause such a high CO reading. Please heed my advice hopefully you’ll be around later to thank me.

      That was the first night of using that detector after a repair. I had actually placed about the detector above and and about two feet away on the first night and it was ten degrees. It hasn’t gone off again. It’s a gas system hot water system

    Good advice you can also use diesel fuel for number two fuel. You should never let your heating system get down to a quarter if you can help it. Put sledge or residual bacteria in the oil into your filters clogging the system. Still wish people would stop replacing their woodstove or wood systems with gas. Always have a back up heat source. Find wood fireplaces to be the best.

    Thank you for all your videos. I want to be able to run my boiler if I lose power in the winter(nyc). I installed a 30amp inlet box outside, installed an interlock on CB panel. I want to put a single receptacle one plug on my boiler when everything is being powered by utility. Unplug it and connect it to my generator, it says less than 3 THD. Is it safe to do that or do I need a UPS? Do you think you can shoot a video how to install that single receptacle to the Boiler wires and the 12-3 Three prong plug. Then remove it and connect to the UPS?
    I trust you and seeing it done would be so so helpful. All the best to you and your family. Mike i.

    Hi, i thought this video was super excellent 👍
    I have a similar set up and in NJ. The issue I'm having is my tracometer ? Never goes under 140 so when I turn my heat on it only runs for a little while once a reaches 190 it turned off. It take so long for the heat to come back on that I set my thermostat at 68 but it never gets there. It stops at 63 and 64 and it's been cold these months so I'm trying to figure out why that's happening.
    I had maintenance done on it back in October and I have about a quarter tank of fuel. All the other parts that you mentioned seem to be working fine. Any advice? Thanks again I appreciate your expertise!

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  5 лет назад

      Thank you for the kind words.The 140 and 190 are the high and low limits. These are set by a tech but 140 does seem a little low to me but I am wondering if your thermostat itself by be bad. It does happen and since you are getting some heat my two things would be to swap the thermostat which can be pretty easy to do. Or have your tech come back and ask him if your low limit of 140 is too low. I hope this helps and thank you for watching.

    REALLY off-topic question - You have a gas line going through the ash dump of your chimney? I am assuming you have a gas fireplace insert? I ask because we are in the process of purchasing either a gas or wood burning fireplace insert. We are estimating the specifics and cost of what would need to be done to make them function. The gas insert needs gas (obviously), and the wood insert needs an electric line to power the blower.
    Were there any issues with your gas setup passing inspection?
    When the time comes, I will hire a contractor to install my fireplace insert. I just want to know the possible hiccups and solutions in the installation.
    Love your videos! Thank you!

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  5 лет назад +2

      You have good eyes! Yes that is exactly it. I purchased a second hand gas insert and installed it myself. BUT I had a licensed gas installer do the line and had it inspected. I do everything myself but gas work is not something that I will not work on for me on anyone else The installer ran it through the clean-out as shown which was OK and approved. It's a common way to retrofit an insert, As an aside. the insert was a great purchase, it made a huge difference in our room. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

    I have a tri-level with 3 zones, and have seldom heated the upper and lower levels, living mostly in the middle floor. But it just occurred to me that as long as the boiler is running for the middle zone, I may as well set the other zones to temps lower than middle as the unused heat just goes up the chimney. With the price of oil at about $6/gallon I want to make the best use of the energy/heat, and maybe start living in the other two zones. Any comments? Thank you!!

    PRO TIP: When replacing Tstat, look into the service manual to see if you can wire it to run off of 24VAC; or the specific voltage required to not have to run off batteries. Same goes with the existing. Solves the battery problem of a no heat situation. Keep in mind, not all Tstats are manufactured in such a way that you can do what I’ve described. But it sure is nice. 👍

    • @andrewfletcher2213
      @andrewfletcher2213 4 года назад

      C Younger Maybe they can; maybe they can’t. It’s unwise to assume someone’s skills level. But what I’m not assuming is your inability to read the first few words of comment that says “PRO TIP” Enough said.

    Good chance I built that boiler. That said, I have an old New Yorker that also has a water heater coil. The boiler turns on for the hot water but not when receiving the call for heat. Thermostat seems to be working properly, still no luck. Any idea on what to check? The boiler was a DIY job by the previous owner with no multi-zone heating.

    Good advice but wrong on the red switch for old houses. We have no red switch has to be turned off at circuit breaker. 3 circuit breaker boxes in house. A Small box has the furnace switch in it and is by the main box which has a small box on the other side. Back of the house has a separate box. Some wiring is just paper covered wire in the basement. Half are circuits are glass or fuses that need replaced ever so often. Also wrong on red box #5 not required in my county. I live Mennonite country by the way.

    What could be wrong? I have a vaillant boiler that pump hot water up to my radiators for heat. There is a radiator in each room of my house. I can see the small flame (pilot flame) is lit but it won't change into a big flame to boil water. I try to by pass the thermostat by connecting both red and white wires (thermostat wires) but nothing happened. So I think the thermostat is still good. I turn off the electric switch on the side of the boiler and the small pilot flame is off. Then I turn the electric switch back on and it self ignite the small pilot flame on again. But it won't change into a big flame to boil water. Could someone help, what could be wrong here? I'm thinking the circuit board where the two thermostat wires are connected onto is damage but I'm not 100% sure. Please help if anyone know what part is bad or damage. Thanks

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  5 лет назад +2

      I am assuming the tankless is within the boiler if that s the case and it's older it might be built up with scale. Some techs will clean them others won't, It also is often the tempering valve, a tech can change that also. These are two items you will likely need a tech for but at least you can ask about these as a starting point.

    My mother has a 23 year old Peerless oil boiler with no external water heater. My mother is elderly and not capable of maintaining it. I live far away and only get to see her once a month. Last time I visited I noticed a white paste coming out of the water release valve spout at bottom of boiler also some water was leaking out of the spout. My brother told me he use to drain the water from boiler once a month to keep it clean but that hasn't been done in 10 years. The boiler is cleaned by the fuel company once a year. The front of the boiler has a glass tube filled with water the water in that tube is around 80% rust colored. The boiler is running fine. My concerns are what is the white paste? Do I need to empty the water out of boiler once a month till it runs near clear?

    The indirect circulator should be on high speed.

    I can't tell you enough how much your video helped me resolve my boiler not starting. I tried so many times troubleshooting the thermostat. I even changed out the thermocouple on my boiler thinking that it wasn't sending enough current to trip the gas furnace to turn on. The section where you discussed the furnace switch (#2) fixed my issue. The switch was on the Off position. I must have accidentally knocked it into Off when I was moving my mattress to the basement. As soon as I saw part #2, I went to the switch, noticed that it was on the "Off" position and then switched it to "On". Voila!! I immediately heard the furnace kick on. You're video rocks. Keep up the great home troubleshooting vids.

      I really appreciate that, I love to hear that the videos helped out. Most of the time it's an easy fix which is good news and that you didn't need to call a heating guy. Thanks for watching.

      Each boiler might be wired slightly different. But knowing the color coding on common primary controls on crucial for oil burners.
      Blue= ignitor\transformer
      Orange = burner motor
      Black = line voltage
      Yellow = cad cell

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  3 года назад

      It's usually a little more than that and you have to be careful when changing the setpoint of the boiler. But usually its that the tempering valve failed or has build up. I wish I could help more for that one you are probaby going to want to call someone in.

    #5 is false. I live in Pa. I've worked in probably 1000 houses and I've never seen the ceiling mounted overheat. It's not national code.

      In Mass it's 527 CMR 4.00 (e) An electrical thermal switch fused to break the ungrounded conductor in the main
      circuit at 165°F, shall be installed in the main power line within six feet over the top of
      the burner-boiler or burner-furnace.

      @@SilverCymbal it's a great idea. I like it but it's not national. I wouldn't argue if they made it a national requirement.
