Avid subscriber here. I just have a question about blower motor. Is an FLA rating of 4.4 Amp better than 5.1 A? My web search says the 4.4 Amp is more energy efficient but the 5.1 Amp might be more suitable for a bigger system. What about the typical residential use case, would a 4.4 Amp suffice? Thanks!

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  10 месяцев назад +2

@@charlietango3774 That is not too big of a difference so you would probably not even notice the difference in efficiency or performance. If possible, replace the motor with whatever FLA you currently have in there. But yes, a 4.4 would work just fine either way. 👍

I'd often take phones off the service, call customers & practice triage. LISTEN to what customers were telling me, many times problems solved and/or at least get them some heat til morning and at regular rates. Gained many new and loyal customers who never forgot the experience.

So, you took the time to go through a years worth of work orders, log sheets and daily notes to compile a detailed list of common furnace problems all so you could make an instructional RUclips video that I would then use to diagnose and repair the bad run capcitor and clogged condensate pump on my furnace, in turn, saving me hundreds of dollars on a service call?
People like you make RUclips awesome. Thanks. Great vid.

My furnace stopped working and had no idea what was wrong. After watching twelve of your videos, I was able to replace the gas valve, which was the main problem, but also replace hot surface ignitor, replace air filter, clean burners, clean flame sensor, and troubleshoot the parts using a multimeter! You saved me hundreds of dollars but more importantly you taught me how to troubleshoot my furnace!

i once helped a friend with her furnace. She said it would come on and shut off within 5 minutes and that she never felt any air coming out of her registers. I asked when was the last time she changed the filter. Just 2 days ago she replied and added that all of the troubles began at the same time. AHA! I had a definite idea what happened and proceeded to the basement to test. Yep, she left the filter in its plastic wrapping! She had no idea that she should peel that off before installation. No charge but she gave me $10 for my trouble and thanked me profusely when the furnace kicked up properly again.

Your 1.3yr. summary of “Top 10” trouble calls was right on the money. My heat sensor located exactly as you showed, (just below the lowest heat channel) was dirty. Cleaned w/scotchbrite as you recommended, reinstalled and now everything works perfect! Thank You! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Liked & Subscribed! Great video. Was in HVAC business myself; I'd add that often times in heavy snow on a 90% furnace the PVC intake may be plugged. A person CAN test pressure switches etc but if you live in snow country check that flirst. Maybe don't even need a ton of snow; maybe careless snowblower usage gets intake covered. Easy to correct.

These furnace vids are great. A year ago Christmas Eve my living room was 40° because my furnace would not stay running. This type of How-To video, One ignitor and one pressure switch later my furnace was working again. The price I paid for the two parts would not have paid for the service call. Christmas Eve 2017 fell on a Sunday. I don't even want to think what that would have cost me.. PS: These videos are WORTH IT, thank you to all the skilled mechanical/technical and others that share their time to make these videos to help us out!! You are a furnace god! Because of you, we have heat on New Year's Eve. For us, it was a combination of cleaning the flame sensor + fixing a drainage water trap on a Carrier Modular Variable Speed High Efficiency Furnace + a slightly damaged drainage hose that was affecting one of the pressure switches. My unit is 17 years old. I just started fixing and checking issues one by one that you provided on the list. By the time I ran through your top 10 most common issues, my furnace was back up and running smoothly and the old house is warming up nicely. after changing out my capacitor/ cleaning my temp probe, checking my inducer fan motor and cleaning it, checking my pressure switch and vac line/ and putting a drill bit in the inducer fan housing pressure hole, swearing a few times/ watching your video a number of times it boiled down to #10 my lower door switch was loosy goosy. 90% broken. I had to wait two weeks for a new one as they were out of stock online, received it, and it turned out to be just a standard cheap switch with a larger on-off button on it. The old one had a wobbly push-rod affair on it and the contact wasn't always being made. I temporarily put an adjustable clamp on it till I got the new door switch.
Maybe the door switch should be moved from the #10 spot to #1 in the pecking order. lol
Thank you so much. I learned how that beast in the basement actually works/ or doesn't work.

You were very clear on the most common problem of a dirty flame sensor and how to fix it. Then it broke a month later. That time I was stumped and had a new furnace guy come. He showed me some more pointers. Then a month later it broke again. My furnace went out two days ago, and I found you on YT and did the diagnostics as you suggested. I narrowed the problem down to the ignitor; it wasn't cracked, but I couldn't test it as I don't own a meter. So, I figured, what the hey, I'll go ahead and buy one, which I did (on Amazon), and try it out before calling a technician. Well, the new igniter just arrived a few minutes ago, and I switched the new one out for the old in record time....AND, WE HAVE LIFTOFF!! Thank you SOOO much, Jay...you're a great instructor, and I saved a bunch of money at a time when I need to hang onto every dollar. Dude, you ROCK!!!!

McKenzie, You just hit the nail right on the head, which Btw, is a helluva lot easier to do with an actual "Carpenters Framing Hammer" which has a machined in crosshatched hammerhead, longer handle resulting in actual "swing/striking power = what's required to sink "Real Nails" with 3 swings rather than the usual 10 or more when using the standard "hammer" that 99% of us must have acquired from somewhere, somehow at sometime or other (usually can't recall, didn't know that question was going to be on the test, LoL) and is kept in the "junk drawer". See, there's the connection staring you right in the face, LoL. Bet the shortest distance between common sense and reality is "Junk Drawer/Trash Can"?!?
Romfflmmfaoooo... We may all be a Lil bit odd but it's kinda sorta "cute" in a strange way HuH, LoL?!? None of us are actually strangers... Well, not much stranger than anyone/everyone else really?!?
Oh Btw, my original point was that while I couldn't hear said it better myself, turn it into a 3 inch thick Paperback Novel as Short Stories really aren't my thing obviously lmaooo, rather than the typical "How To's, Why? Just Because..." Vids are now or should be, a thing of the past thanks to KIDS "WHY TO & HOW" Videos!?! Even while saying that he didn't want to spend too much and/or anymore time on any one topic (and he really didn't, he somehow managed to keep everything moving quite surprisinly along but at the same time sending 100X+ more actual "REAL" information out to literally The Entire World). Hell, if every single person only walked away with one piece, everyone has now actually SEEN WHY, not just TOLD (Once Again As Always) to change the Filter (just because). Many people probably think technicians get some kind of kick-back from 3M for every Furnace Filter sold or something, LoL.
      Hey... Bottom Line here is...
      IT'S MY IDEA DON'T FORGET!
      I THOUGHT OF iT FIRSt!!!
      BAAÀAAAAHAHA... HAH!!!
      *Peace*
      And
      Brightest Blessings Always

Outstanding. Middle-aged guy here who has never subscribed to a RUclips channel before. N-e-v-e-r. But I'm subscribed to this one now. I figured my gas valve was bad at 1:00am after peering behind the furnace cover with exterior temperatures plunging close to 30F and interior temps dropping. You described my problem very concisely in about 15 seconds: Thermostat calls for heat, inducer spins up, igniter heats up, nothing happens, valve solenoid clicks to close, inducer spins down. It appears the valve never opens. Thanks!!

Jay, all of your videos are excellent, informative, and very helpful. My 1996 Bryant Plus 80 wouldn't light and kept showing codes 12 or 31. I checked the pressure switch for voltage, vacuum port and tube were open, the valve clicked from suction, and I changed the air filter, all with no luck. My mistake was leaving the thermostat ON when I was cutting furnace power on and off for troubleshooting-the sensors think something is wrong. I erased the trouble codes by turning OFF furnace power, then turning the thermostat OFF, then turning furnace back ON, then turning thermostat ON, and it works perfectly now with a steady red indicator light. I might have given up if not for all of your videos. Thank you for all your great advice!

Them shut down ...and try again until lockout ....Your mention of water backup in the drain hose got me to the problem ... After following where that hose went I saw the fix ...It was blocked ...after clearing the hose ...much water drained out .... working just fine .... and it is a 40 degree day here ....thanks again Ken

Thank you so much! Just having you talk to me while I tried to fix my furnace helped me see that since I didn't put the cover back on after I changed the spark plug, it wasn't starting. I realized there is a black swinging switch thing that pushes in, and then it all started up just like you said, so I put my cover back on with the screws, and it worked. Boy oh boy, I bet you didn't think you ever needed to remind people to put the cover back on in order for the furnace to work! I have a 2007 Payne.

Thanks so much for this excellent video. Have a Bryant furnace circa 2007. Was getting error code 31 indicating Pressure Switch issue. Changed switch and worked for awhile but issue returned. Then I paid particular attention to your discussion regarding the Condensate Trap possibly clogged. I removed the tube from the top of the trap closest to me and had a bucket ready and i'm glad I had it ready. Alot of water drained out of that tube. I then removed the trap from the unit by squeezing the tabs and moving the bottom of the trap to the left. It came out easily. Then took the trap to a kitchen sink filled with hot water with a a bit of Dawn detergent. Let it soak for about a half hour, then started rinsing with full streams of hot water. Quite a bit of dirt came out of the trap, but did not seem excessive. Guess it doesn't take much grime to clog these things up.
Installed the cleaned trap back into the furnace and routed my drain line into a small bucket to see if the flow had improved. Furnace fired up immediately and after a bit a good flow of water was going into the bucket. Thanks again for your help !!!

I turned off the power switch, changed the filter, and with the thermostat to auto, heat, and a higher temp than the room, I switched the furnace power switch back on. the gas flowed, the burners lit then lo and behold the blower turned on too. My furnace is working as it should. Thanks for the bower reset info!!! Much love, you save me some $$$!

I just posted your video to Facebook because ever since my mom died and I had Thanksgiving in the night before the furnace died and my HVAC friend came over and ruined the control board because he didn’t take a tab off the limit switch… I have been watching RUclips‘s and learning how to fix my furnace all this time it’s 32 years old now and I found a flyer that said it could last to 50 years it’s a stellar York plus I want you to know that you are the most awesome furnace video maker that there is and my HVAC guy agrees and says I forgot what he said, but he said they let me go look
“He is a good tech he will probably end up teaching the trade”

RUDD is the best furnace my cousin said
People do not make the mistake I did on a New Year’s Eve day. Someone told me about a local mechanic HVAC person. He installed a $3000 furnace at my grandmas house but he installed it wrong when I was there between tenants it would come on every two minutes every two minutes no one could fix it. Finally a new HVAC student who started a business looked at the air filter and said look of large portion of this air filter isn’t even dirty and he looked up. The specs in the hole wasn’t large enough for the air filter , everyone in our local area I thought he was great and when I told him what happened he had no response he said thanks for the update. He is now retired. Good thing.

Most informative DIY repair info ever. Rather than simply providing troubleshooting and solutions, ranking the repairs by frequency is a unique approach and very useful. I was looking for a failure-to-open gas valve and I have a little more troubleshooting to do to isolate to the main control board vs the ignitor control board (1990 Rheem). (It's not the safety switches or the gas valve itself.) But watching all the other possibilities (probabilities!) was really helpful. It allows us to recognize problems as they arisel, and even better, understand 'why' these problems arise in the first place.

Draft inducer was the culprit. Repairman said it needed to be rebuily due to age of heater. Yet i found cimplete unit readily avail. On Amazon for less than what he claimed for just motor... I had a problem with my furnace today and have never swapped filters in a timely manner at all. So it was caked with dust and even had a tiny hole smack in the middle-looked like it got pulled-in a little by the fan... whoops. Replaced that but it still didn't light up & stay lit, let alone blow any heat for us. So I watched this video, then checked the 1st problem you mentioned 'dirty flame sensor', and I regret to inform; I definitely had a dirty dang flame sensor! Gave it a scrub with the Benji I planned to seperate with in a couple hours to that strange guy from 'All the Time HVAC', even after telling the ol lady 'I'd fix it my gal-dang self!'. And guess what... that done it. 100% up and running again! Thanks a lot OP. I didn't tell the ol lady I watched this... now she thinks I'm the genius in the family, 'your side', she said.
