So fun story, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand is a running joke with me and my friend since he worked at THQ during this game's development. (He last worked on Saints Row: The Third PR stuff and was there right until the company imploded). So he has all these random stories about when THQ scooped up the project and started ramping up promotion for the game.
Some stories include 50 visiting THQ and the top brass / management sucking up to him big times, all while 50 had the biggest ego; tons of cardboard cutouts of 50 littering the offices with everyone trying to get them out of the way; and my favorite, everyone getting a copy on release, but nobody wanted the game, so you would come into the office in the morning and find a stack of unwanted 50 Cent: BOTS on your desk, leaving you no choice but to find another person to ditch them on. The game was like some sort of cursed item among the office.
Also THQ related, but apparently after they imploded, you can see the abandoned HQ office my friend worked at in Parks and Recreation. Specifically the episode where Aziz Anzari and Ben Schwartz start their own business, their office was in the lobby / main area of the THQ building. He thought it was hilarious because the two set up a mismanaged failing business, in the grave of a mismanaged failing business.

    • @rohgadriscol

can you tell me why THQ insisted to work with Nickelodeon?, it would be great to shed a light in this topic.

    • @HighwaterTrousers
      @HighwaterTrousers 2 года назад +76

      @@rohgadriscol
I sort of can, but the THQ × Nickelodeon partnership started before he worked there. So please don't take this as like the authoritative source!
So for background, Nickelodeon's parent company was Viacom and when it was time to make video game tie-ins, games were either contracted out or developed internally at a Viacom studio. But the Viacom studio was eventually shut down due to poor sales.
THQ used to be in the toy business (they were known as Toy Head Quarters before shortening to THQ). So they had developed relations with companies like Nickelodeon. And since they were moving more into games, they were a company Nick contracted out to. Somewhere in the same time, THQ was also grabbing up other licenses, including at the time the WWE (WWF technically since that was mid 90s?) THQ's tie in brand games were ultimately really successful, which in turn was profitable for the companies who owned the IPs.
So it wasn't that THQ insisted on working with Nickelodeon, it was more the other way around mixed with join interest. THQ at this point at the end of the 90s was one of the biggest game publishers. And Nickelodeon knew THQ was successful at handling their IPs and by giving THQ first rights / a master contract for their IPs it was easier to get games made quickly and out the door alongside shows and movies. (Think like how Jimmy Neutron had tie ins for every platform rushed out alongside the movie.) Also, this way Viacom saw this as a way to save money by not having to handle development internally, since their own studio was closed down and wouldn't need to be revived.
You should still be able to find interviews, but this partnership is supposedly what kickstarted the creation of Tak. As THQ said they had huge success with original IPs and with Nickelodeon's on board they could do a new game / TV brand. THQ would put in a large amount of money and resources to make big hitting game and Nickelodeon would follow up with a heavily promoted show. Nickelodeon would hold the IP rights, but both companies would see shared revenue.
That said, we all know how THQ was mismanaged into implosion. A lot of people working at or with the company had no idea it was about to go bankrupt until the company went public with it. So other companies had already bought the rights to THQ's IPs and contracts, with Activision Blizzard going for the Nickelodeon contract. Supposedly they saw it as easy money, as in put a little bit of money into a rushed tie in and make big bucks since they would be big name IPs.
My friend mentioned once that he and his coworkers were told at the very last minute they would lose their jobs. So a lot of them tried to move with the projects to other companies. He was in talks to move with the South Park game (The Stick of Truth), but it went to Ubisoft and apparently they said no to him and others.

I don't know if or when this comment will reach you but...Do you or your friend know anything about Juiced 2? More specifically, what went wrong with its development that caused it to be such a letdown compared to the first game, from the questionable driving physics to what can only be described some rather baffling design choices, not to mention the plethora of unused content still in the game files (several custom items such as rims and bodykits, and even a whole car)? If there's any story to be told behind any of that, I'd be genuinely interested to hear it.

And in another sense, you could also argue that a young kid who plays games like that would be the best judge of fun-ness because he's probably not going to suck up, and would be more reflective of a target demo than some specially certified play tester. Completely disregards the previous design allowances and analysis process, but it's a pretty solid devils advocate strategy

I really hope someone kept a copy of the Robert Ludlum vertical slice demo. It was a really nice effort with some cool set pieces. IIRC there was a bit with a tank entering into the gameplay space. I also remember being impressed with the use of shaders at the time where the rain (or was it snow) falling on the gun barrel and then evaporating as the player shot.
I was pretty gutted that the game didn’t go into full production. There was hope that Robert Ludlum could become a bit of a Tom Clancy type brand.

This game is actually a phenomenal idea. They kind of stumbled backwards backwards into a brilliant, meta, semi ridiculous but cool concept.
50 cent has had a long career, but that was probably the bottom of his career in 2009/2010. If that game had come out 5 years earlier or 5 years later, I think it could have been number one. Hell, if they remastered it right now and released it (with current gen graphics) it would probably do significantly better with all of his popularity around his TV projects and businesses.

This game was a wonderful surprise for me. Not being a big fan of his music. I am however a big fan of shooting the hell out of things and cursing with the push of a button. Its so bonkers that it's wonderful and I'm happy to learn that even the process of it coming to be was bonkers.

A friend and I saw this game once long ago and we had to pick it up and play it. We weren't 50 Cent fans, I'd never listened to his music, or even rap in general. But the game was so dumb and goofy it was worth a try, and honestly the mechanics, the gameplay, the gun play etc, was all done really well. I can't believe the video leaves out that there is a dedicated button to making 50 swear whenever you hit it. And his swearing is an upgradable feature! It was dumb and over the top and it was done really well and enjoyable to play.
Though finding out the helicopter and driving parts were forced additions makes sense, as they were way less enjoyable and polished than the rest of the game.

The big mystery I'm wondering is: I Am Alive. I think it's a very well made game. It was in development hell for a time, then the publisher finished it in house, so all the interesting threat based combat mechanics were probably made in the process of salvaging the content.

I, personally, sometimes use the Wha Happun and What Happened titles interchangeably, but I often stick to the latter since, as Matt said, it's easier to look up videos with that title.
Also, has anyone else here noticed that Matt has updated the thumbnails of some of the older What Happened episodes so that they now have the updated name of the show and the use of Matt's current avatar? As of this writing, the Daikatana, Sonic 06, Resident Evil 6, and the first Fallout 76 video-among a few others-have been updated in this fashion, and I reckon Matt will eventually update even more of the older What Happened thumbnails this way. I guess it's being done to help with the current branding of the show, which is pretty neat in my book!

In relation to the FPS trailer, years ago back at college they held a quake multiplayer the score margins between 2nd, 3rd and 4th were very close to each other (and I was fourth) With exception to one guy who was 1st but by a decent margin, it may have been my memory but I swear he had a Bruce Lee skin on his character.
It was all in good fun as it was part of a fundraising event.
Thought I mention it given the trailer spoke of multiplayer and my mind just flashed back to that time.
