The fact that this team went on to make Terminator: Resistance, a clunky but super faithful and loving Terminator game, is certainly very surprising and welcome
That games high on my backlog "To Play" list. I've heard good things about it, some minor clunk but a relatively good game for being a media tie in. If memory serves right, the game was also priced under a full priced release, being $30 here in the states. A fair deal for what it is.

Resistance was brilliant and was a far more faithful installment to the Terminator films than, honestly, everything after 3
@@ericluis2710 the movement and shooting felt a bit stiff for my liking, but I did just come off of playing Doom Eternal, so perhaps that's an unfair judgment.
It's not even really meant as a criticism, more a nitpick.
I love that game. It captured the feel of the movie really well. Rambo was a trainwreck however. Poor Sly looked like a potato with sausages sticking out, and a hairy grape on top. And the "mission successful" voice at the end sounded like a sexual predator maing an obscene phonecall.
The devs once held a contest on Facebook to score the most headshot kills in the first level - and given how resonance pretty much died down at this point, I managed to score 1st place, nabbing two Rambo figurines with a golden stand in the process.
Still have them on my shelf to this day. Whoever came in second and third got the same ones, but with silver and bronze-tinted stands.

While having never played Rambo or Terminator: Resistance, the fact that the later is more polished shows one thing, the teams are learning, meaning subsequent releases could very well get better and better

It's good to hear about a small company I've never heard of before on this show and that they survived the ordeal and are making better games. It seems like that rarely happens.

Well to be fair, there were a LOT of bigger disasters he wanted to cover first, like… *Ahem* Cyberpunk 2077.
I could believe it having not been a disaster development (thus not necessarily a subject for this show) prior to this being made, since the game is very low quality, but it feels moreso in a "barely anything is here" way, rather than "there's a lot and it's all broken" manner like the Sonic topics, Spirits Within, etc.

I could understand making a rail shooter out of Rambo's II & III, but not First Blood. The sequels are for the most part gung ho, testosterone pumping, action blockbusters. First Blood is a tragedy about how America's Vietnam War veterans were cast aside by the society they fought so hard for, causing one man's PTSD to finally break him. The end of the Police Station shootout ends with Colonel Trautman screaming at Rambo "It's Over!" but doesn't include the gut wrenching speech John gives about reliving his best friend being blown up through constant nightmares which just feels... wrong to not include...
Yeah exactly. John Rambo kills exactly 0 people directly in First Blood, so it's so bizarre to have a level dedicated to it.

@@jacket2425 While he was at fault for that death, it was from throwing a rock at the helicopter causing the pilot to react, the sniper falling out of the helicopter as a result.
I did feel the need to specify "directly" because technically yeah that man died because of John's actions.
And the First Blood levels actively discourages you from killing cops, only shooting them in the legs, but the auto aim system thought otherwise.

Apparently the people handling the old dialogue clips didn't know about Izotope RX, an appplication and plugin developed for the exact purpose of restoring and cleaning up audio that's been around since at least 2008...
My boss is a Polish immigrant. Very awesome guy, but doesn't think things through very thoroughly, and from what he tells me that's kind of a cultural thing when it comes to work.
Like, work hard obviously, but do what you need to to get the job done, and don't waste time on the extra things.
Playing Gothic and other games that are popular in Poland kind of demonstrates this mentality, and I don't think it's a bad one under the right circumstances.

Ya know, a game version of First Blood would make a pretty good stealth game, considering the content of the movie (only 1 guy gets killed, and it's mostly Rambo evading the cops and setting non-lethal traps).
The jump from this to Terminator Resistance is just insane. I'm keeping an eye on these guys, because they seem passionate.
I love how Matt used the greatest pro-wrestling promo of all time. Anyone who disagrees is 141% and 2/3 wrong.

I remember playing Rambo in arcades, it was a lot fun especially when you activate Rage mode.
Its weird how Mortal Kombat had a better ending for Rambo than the ending in Last Blood.
Agreed on all counts. Especially Terminator Resistance. It’s not the greatest FPS ever made but it shows a lot of care and obvious reverence for Terminator 1&2, plus some truly good infiltration sequences. It’s actually heart warming that the devs survived the Rambo fiasco and improved.
Amazing that the company who made this went on to make Terminator: Resistance.

@@bearerofbadnews1375 they have not. In fact, from what I've read, Babylon's Fall is doing even worse than Avengers, so not only did they not learn their lesson, they doubled down on it
Can’t wait to see a What Happened on Babylon’s Fall in the near future. Apparently, it’s atrocious, and currently has a lower Metacritic score than Sonic 06 and Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival.
Matt after all this time I still get excited every time I see a what happened. Its fascinating how you break down the blunders of the gaming industry. And hopefully with such blunders and mistakes so openly shown it can show potential aspiring developers things NOT to do. Great video as always. 👍

I love these guys for Terminator, if they can keep that quality going and improve from there, they'll be one of the biggest underdog stories in gaming. (who comes close? Techland? From Software? I'm probably forgetting at least one)
Can't wrap my head around how the same studio made Robocop Rogue City, one of the best games I've played.
Up until you specifically said the release date was 2014, I was assuming this was a 2006-2007 wii game based on how it looks.
Watching this video with 2024-hindsight was a bit of a ride. I remember when this game plopped out in 2014 and remembered hearing how absolutely dreadful it was. What I did not remember was that the developers were the ones behind Terminator Resistance and *Rogue City* of all things. Damn, that's a helluva glowup. Especially after hearing about their early career before this game, seeing Teyon go from games like this is oddly inspiring, that you can blunder as hard as Rambo 2014 and still have a chance to redeem yourself like that. It's the kind of stories I'm happy to hear at the ends of What Happened episodes.
That's pretty cool the same guys did the Terminator game. Good on them for learning from their experiences and managing to make a good game worthy of the IP.

I would love to see a video on what happened during the development on Black Ops 4 or even the game Rambo recently returned in Black Ops: Cold War because from what I've heard with that game was it was originally supposed to be one of Sledgehammer's games but due to disagreements it became a Treyarch one

Nice to see some of these smaller studio stories have happy endings, even if the game is still a mess but the studio lives on to make better content it’s a win in my book

I queued for more than 90 minutes at Gamescom in Cologne Germany to be able to test it.
When it was my turn because of the janky controls I couldn't play 5 minutes before I went dead.
The usual, if you went on in the game, the next one came right away, so I queued for over 90 minutes and then couldn't even play 5 minutes...
At the end there was a poll at the booth where I gave 1 out of 5 and they then asked why🤣
One of my favorite games of all time. I mean, I've never played it but it's such an anomaly that it exists and is an on rails shooter to boot.
A Rambo prequel videogame set during Rambo's time in Vietnam has so much potential it could be an awesome squad based shooter and you get to see the horrors of war. Not to mention being able to rip out some throats lol

Good to hear what happened for smaller dev teams have a more happy ending then the normal. Personally I never played this game because I had a bad feeling about it when I saw it in a store.

There's a game that perfectly suits your show. Really tragic case, to be honest - good story, solid gameplay, but bombed hard nevertheless. I'm talking about Binary Domain from Bandai Namco. Hope you'll take a look at it one day.

Babylons Fall making a good case for Wha Happun
I never even knew it released or that it had a release date. I only heard about it when it was first revealed and then absolutely nothing until I found out just today that it has launched and that it's live service and that its launch day is even more abysmal than Crystal's Avengers. And I was hyped for this game when it was first revealed. Now I'm sad to hear it's following the same path a lot of other Squenix games have been following lately. This is primo Wha Happun
update: that Robert Cop game is actually decent

A day later then video this video was uploaded, Too bad you did not mention the Nine saving bars throughout the gameplay, but I still love this episode of *WHA HAPPUN*

I just realized this is the same team that made the Robocop game that is hailed as the best 2A game of 2023. Man seeing them turning things around is inspiring, together with them releasing the dlc for free and providing free upgrades for the Terminator game, I have huge respect for this team.
I have a physical copy of this game and I love it.

Making a Rambo on rails shooter that is fun should not be hard, this is one of the more interesting episodes of this show.

Btw, the arcade version by Sega is amazingly good, it's a HotD-like shooting game with QTE's that play movie clips in between, with pretty amazing usage of the footage and situations too. If you haven't ever played it, I totally recommend it...
It can be "emulated" on PC with Teknoparrot if you dont have an arcade near you :)
I agree, it’s a good rail shooter and is extremely fun when you have the actual arcade gun, just wouldn’t want to play on controller tho lol

Everybody is talking about Terminator: Resistance being underrated, and that's true, but can we talk about Free Running that's briefly shown at 2:06? I think it's one of the best Parcour-games out there, especially for it's age. Unlike Dying Light or Assassins Creed, where Parcour is just part of the gameplay, and Mirrors Edge, where it's mostly about getting from A to B, Free Running is the only Parcour-game that I'm aware of that actually includes a wide variety of tricks, aerial, on the ground, ans while vaulting, on top of movement-based challenges. And the levels are surprisingly multi-layered and interconnected for a game that's almost 20 years old.
It was really good of tyon studios to release a free DLC not only (trying to) fix some bugs but also offer a mini campaign to a game that was a pretty obvious cash grab. Like when someone fucks up, even if their attempts to fix the situation aren't perfect, it still shows a deep sense of heart for their consumers.
Because of this fact, I'm not particularly surprised their Terminator game turned out much much better because to me they've demonstrated a stronger desire to make something good rather than making something for money. I hope they're able to keep it up the world could use less cash-grab style studios
Pretty nice to see the devs be rewarded for actually caring about the IP and being trusted to do better games. Though I still think making Rambo a franchise in the first place is a terrible idea.

I was so excited when this game was announced. Then I started to hear more and more details about it. Such a missed opportunity. Terminator Resistance was pretty good for what it was though.

This might be one of the only times a game would’ve benefited from a peripheral control scheme, the Rambo light gun arcade cabinet is genuinely on of the best arcade shooters I’ve played, could’ve just made a home version of that and people would’ve been allot happier 🤷♂️

Not a shooter at all, but I'd be curious to hear about Wha Happun with "Freedom Wars", a PS-Vita exclusive Monster Hunting game which seemed to have had a lot of issues, or at least felt like it's development team "dropped the ball" halfway thorough, so to speak.
