  • How are Christians supposed to rejoice when there is so much wrong in the world and in our lives? Paul makes it clear that joy is not optional for the believer, and that we will suffer if we follow Christ. In eight minutes, John Piper uncovers the secret to unshakeable joy in pain and loss.

Amen brother Piper. One of the verses that has been so dear to me since the moment the Lord saved me has been Phillipians 4:11-For whichever state you may be in, be content. True joy is only found in contentment. I work in an office of which I myself don't make very much but there are people making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, driving Mercedes and Lexus cars but when you hear them speak, they don't have any joy nor happiness. They always want more, the money they make is never enough and they never seem to truly be content, they are miserable.
The lost man can never truly know & experience what real joy is because his heart is set on the things of the flesh of which can never be satisfied. I am so content with the little that I make and although I struggle financially at times, I wouldn't trade my little job for that CEO position because Christ is enough, he has to be.

+Carissa Vasile Really? Go to a 3rd world country where families make less than $2 a week, have no food and drink dirt water that they are not suffering. Suffering is suffering, whether it's financially, emotionally or physically..

Once we come to a full understanding of how everything in our lives is a gift from GOD, yes everything. Our faith is a gift 🎁 from GOD, that includes anything we can think of, anything and everything is a gift from GOD.

I abounded at one time. I was living in sin too. I didn't learn how to abound, so that was taken from me, at least for the time being. However, I have contentment and joy now and would rather keep that than get back my losses. Maybe God will restore what the cankerworm took if it is in his plan for me. If He doesn't, I am good with that because I trust him. I want to gain Christ.

God gives faith, and God gives suffering, you say. But I thought God would only give good gifts to his sons. As in that verse which says something like "if you are not perfect and give good gifts to your children, how much more will God give you" Also, when asked for a fish, you won't give a stone. So I find it hard to believe that God is giving us our suffering. Plus God will give us what we ask in faith. I believe our suffering comes from the Devil and his associates. We need to flee from him. I try, I try, but it's really hard. I'm way too depressed, I'm not looking forward to dragging my sick, ugly, sad person through the years until I die. God is always there for me, I know that, but I'm simply too down and in too much psychological pain to be able to find joy in things that no longer bring me joy. I hope you understand what I mean. God is good, but I'm weak and sad and I don't believe He was the one to give me all this suffering. I will respect him and I will suffer until the end of my appointed days, but I'm sure He only gives good gifts, not suffering.

    • @arajrao

Helia, the odd thing is that Piper suffered from a 5 year bout with severe depression. I mean full blown depression, not just the blues or seasonal affective disorder or being down in the dumps for a day. He does not seem to talk all that much about it, and I wonder how he got over it. I do know that he kept repeating Psalm 42:5 over and over again at that time. It helped him a lot as it has helped me.
That said I am still not clear on the nature of suffering being a gift. I am not settled on that. And while I continue to process that, I take my cue from something else... Where the apostle Paul uses the term content in Phil. 4:11 ( "... I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances."), he is using a term that he has borrowed from the Stoic philosophers. The Stoics used the word (autarkes) to mean "self-sufficiency". The apostle gives it a new meaning, viz. "God-sufficiency". So I think we need to pray hard to God asking us to help us see how He is sufficient and ask for help to realize that God-sufficiency. Ok. Thats that and now I will pray for you. Take care...

3 years later, I pray you are doing better. I felt the need to reply to your comment as I've gone through a similar experience. Years of chronic pain and health problems at a young age halted my life and made me start to question God. Psalm 84:11 - 'No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.' It certainly felt like He was withholding many good things from me. How was suffering a good thing? I learned that suffering itself is not the good thing, but what the suffering accomplishes. We have to remember, God's definition of 'good' is not always our definition of 'good'. God uses what He hates to accomplish what He loves. Don't forget, He is doing a thousand things in every one thing that He is doing. I believe that He is about weaning us away from this world - we cannot enter Heaven trying to carry pieces of the world with us. At 18, after many years of pain, I can attest that He has withheld no good thing from me. I pray you will be able to see it in your own life.

grumbling is not the opposite of joy/contentment. grumbling is an activity, whereas joy/contentment is a state of feeling. The opposite grumbling therefore is praising. Opposite of joy/contentment would be misery (discontent) and sadness (lacking in vitality) (feelings). As such, Suffering is a backward looking mental activity based on choice that keeps you trapped in a state of feeling emotional sadness, loss and regret. There are four types of suffering: mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. Check out this teacher based in the USA who breaks this down very logically. Check the Channel at DIVINE WISDOM RISING.

What if you dont feel anything? What if you lose everything and God is silent. What do you do then? If you dont feel anything there is no joy that can come from it. I dont understand how just an idea of Christ can bring joy and contentment. As humans we have to feel something or experience something to bring joy. When you're in the valley of the shadow of death and God is silent I dont see how there can be any joy. Maybe I'm missing something but I dont understand

So god is in charge of every circumstance, and we should feel joy in every circumstance such as a woman getting gang raped and then stabbed to death and a child being raped and murdered by an adult as god has sovereignty over all things, situations, and circumstances, so as these innocent people lie violated, mangled, and dying, they should have smiles on their faces at all the joy god just brought them.

My public channel I think that's a great and difficult question to answer. I believe that our joy can also be in the fact that we will be with Him when we die, even if our life on earth sucks a lot some of or even all of the time. Though I agree it is hard to have joy in those circumstances, there are many stories of people having joy while faced with death for their faith. Such as Steven in the Bible (Acts I think). :)

Will you ignore the fact that it was caused by men? Will you ignore the fact that it was men who corrupted this world with their wickedness? Will you ignore the fact that it is your twisted mind that takes something good from God and makes it something wicked? To answer your question, God is sovereign over all things, He allows wickedness such as that to occur by His Permissive Will. He allows you to sin daily yet you aren't dead. Or would you like God only to stop the things you think are evil? Where do we stop cutting off all the evil? Wrong question. You and I are not judges for both you and I are vile and wicked. Only God can judge righteously.

It would be strange if faith in good things did not give rise to positive thinking but sad to think if that positive thinking had no basis. However, God has called us to a living hope. This is expressed in 1 Peter 1: 3 - 5: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." This hope is of an inheritance set aside for believers, who have entered into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ through God's gift of faith.

I don't suppose you or anyone commenting about how awesome you and this message are have ever been through anything so painful that all you can do is shake your fist at the sky...and CURSE the "god" in which I was indoctrinated to believe. And who never shows up.
And yet, those of us who have, all we have to turn to are preachers and "believers" who have never lived through the suffering you're all experts on.

joy in suffering? sounds very sado masochistic but isnt that what God loves? Pain, sorrow, grief, torture, long suffering, death, darkness, hopelessness, misery, torment, anguish, tears. with a God like God, who needs the devil.
