Correct if I am wrong: Ton Koopman is one of the best playing Bach on the organ.

MrUseur I think he's amazing and plays a lot 'younger' than he looks! :p The Adagio was the piece that really turned me on to Koopman. I cried when I first heard it. :)

Zoe Joyce Very true, the Adagio is really good, especially how Ton plays is. Btw, have you listend to BVW-540 played by Ton Koopman? High dynamic piece of Bach, it just blows me away how Koopman plays it. Kind of a different order. Of course, a question of subjective taste.

MrUseur Yes, I've listened to BWV540 many times. I have the complete organ works of Bach by Ton Koopman and I've listened to it on RUclips as well. Which version do you mean? He interprets it differently on different organs. :)

The piece dictates the tempo, the structure of the music and the composers intentions do. Nothing else matters. I never tried making the old sources out to be a "bible", you are right in saying that they are not. But they do give us the best possible idea about what the composer intended.

    the key is C major.
    the pitch is D major.
just guess what's the right question to ask.
    not 440, not 415,3 , just 493,9 Hz for the A.

Tempo is quite good , not because of treatises but because it has musical sense ... and what has been written on paper 3 centuries ago is not 'bible' ... the right tempo, then, is depending on the space you play in, and on the instruments you are using..

No it isn't. Study historical sources such as Kirnberger "Des Kunst des reinen Satzes" and Thieme: "Nouvelle Theorie sur les differens mouvemens de la musique moderne"~1801. I am confident you will discover that how people think of tempo today is completely alien to how they thought of tempo in the old days. Even as late as the 19th century they were still thinking of tempo in a much faster sense than they do today.

About as close as you can get to walcha

Walcha uses no ornamentation at all in the adagio
