RARE ROTARY ENGINE FROM EBAY! Will it Run? | Rotary ATV EP. 1

- We got this Sachs Wankel KM24 Rotary engine from eBay a couple years ago and we're finally ready to put it to good use! These were originally used on the 1974 Arctic Cat Lynx 295 snowmobiles and it's horsepower numbers are in the mid 20's. We picked up a 1980's Suzuki LT230 Quadsport frame to complete our trifecta of small rotary engine builds. (This engine is pretty similar to the one on our shifter kart) We weren't able to get it running because of pitting and compression leakage, but we will use what we learned in past rotary builds to get this thing back in working order. Thanks for watching!

Sweet! A new rotary project! Idea- Vintage two-stroke Sachs moped, with a Sachs rotary swap.....
That would be so sick
@@datnis916 I think so too! A top tank Sachs moped (Sachs G3) would be awesome for it............. Could call it the Sachs Prima G3-R
Check out this Suzuki a50 Sachs
ruclips.net/video/QThl-AALfTM/видео.html
I got an km24 lying around… runs mint
@@jtothefx 23hp would put a Sachs G3 moped at just a bit more than all 1982 50cc GP bike hp averages. (Between 19, and 21hp, or so.) Perfect amount of horsepower for a bike that light. Of course they will want to upgrade the front brake, shocks, and fork, and run spoke wheels, with tires rated to 100+mph.... 😁
Found this randomly at 5am. Now I am hooked!
I approve 🚀🔥
What's up Vasily!
Yessir! Appreciate it
@@BuildBreakRepeat No such thing as an artic cat.
There's a coating on the material that the side seals run on so if you file sand or mill that down you going to take that coating away. You definitely should watch Rob Dom's videos where he x-rays the actual housings to figure out what materials they're made of
I think its Nikasil... lots of small all aluminum two strokes have this coating in them inside the cylinder. its only a thousandth of an inch thick or so.
@Renaissance Man rotaries do not use nikasil. The housing plating consists of a specialized chrome, and the seals are generally made of carbon/aluminum seals.
Rig up a motor to the belt drive to get her spinning faster, a good run and heat cycle can often bring engines back to life just got to give it the RPM to get started
There is a chrome or similar plating on the oval and the side plates. Sachs use to have a recoat business but they sold all the wakel stuff to Norton. Not sure if any of the people doing Nikasil can plate them. I seem to remember there was a limit on how many times you could replate them. I have a KM24 and a number of KM913's. Also have a RX7 in an Austin HEaly sprite.
They have Nikasil plate the whole side cover. Then machine away the area that seals.
Thanks for the info! We’ll check it out
@@clementsmallengine4833 it is a specialized chrome plating, not nikasil.
Good choice using an LT frame! Those are amazing quads and second only to the old 250R quads back in the day! Ill be watching the build!
Cool start of another great project thanks for sharing 🙏🙌🙌
Great job guys
Great video. There are a few groups of that have old snowmobiles with these Wankel engines in them.
I think watching your Rotary engine videos are as cool as watching Rob Dahm's Rotary engine videos.
Looking forward to this project!!
Man I had one of those sleds in the 90’s, bought if of a neighbour for 100$,3 snowmobile mechanics tried to get that thing running properly to finally rip that thing out and pit in a 340, hope you have better luck than I did
that is going to be a great trio when this project raps.
great stuff
Love this channel
Great video! I have two of these I need to build something with.
I like the build but you guys might try some two stroke oil and gas in a spray bottle. Just spraying carb cleaner will drop compression and could cause damage. I am glad you did split the block because that water damage could have been worse if it started.
Dang i got a Wankel 303 sitting in a milk crate in my storage trailer. Its rough though, ill have to make my own rotor seals from a 10A(if i remember correctly) Mazda motor. Thanks for taking us along lol
This looks like it's going to be scary fun to drive.LoL.Probably want the trailing arm about a foot longer so it doesn't flip by wheelie when you goose it.You guys will have it going in no time.Have fun.
You could use the shaft sticking out for a pulley and supercharger 👀👀👀👀
That's my plan for the km24 I have
@@clementsmallengine4833 going to be vlogging it mate?
@@MaNNeRz91 yes I'll be posting it on my channel when I get to it.
@@clementsmallengine4833 have subbed will look forward to that one mate 👌👍
i'm hyped for this one
love the Rotary engiens looking forward to the next video
all the love from norway
Looks promising hopefully. Can’t wait to hear it run! 🤘🏻
The inside of that engine looks like a rubrics cube to me.😂 Interesting to see how they operate. 👍
Love your channel! I followed the Red Beard, Grind Hard Plumbing & Rather Be Welding trail, which led me here.
Have you ever considered skipping the pull start altogether, and just use a battery drill/driver to start your machines?
So much easier than messing with pull starts.
Saw someone do it on Tiktok recently and wondered if you'd ever considered it.
Keep up the good work, you guys are awesome!
Just a thought.
I love rotaries! ❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥
You guys need to get in touch with Rob dahm, you guys should look him up. I'm pretty sure he would help you guys out
^this, best rotary channel on YT
These engines are so cool. Looking forward to the next video. Hope the sanding works have my fingers crossed for you guys.
Was compression tested with the throttle open?
Next time you try tuning it on with low compression try adding a little oil down the intake. In puerto rico its done all the time when you have low compression
Good rule of thumb. Avoid defiling of your shaft.
I always run my pull starts with a electric drill. Remove cover. Put socket on center nut
I have a km24 and its no spark but I have power in a blue wire connect to the coil so I need to know what else can be the issue
Own one of these KM-24's and are much better designed for performance than the original Sachs Wankels these were made specifically for Arctic Cat. The original pull starter were stamped sheet metal steel rather than like the old ones off the original 18hp model's which were cast aluminum and they had the cool apex cast into the recoils. The crankshafts on the KM24 had a extention nut that held the flywheel on. This was to pass the shaft through the recoils to activate the external fuel pumps which were also mounted to the recoil housing and ran a tiny ball bearing on the end of the shaft to act as a camshaft and drive the mechanical fuel pump which were more like a VW air cooled engine fuel pump using a diaphragm and cam lever to pump the fuel not a vacuum operating fuel pump which were highly problematic on the Wankels due to the lack of vacuum and or hot exhaust gases heating the diaphragms up and causing damage. They were actually developed to run electric starters if you want to get complicated? ALSO the original carbs on the KM24s were not slide carbs they were a standard butterfly carb like the 18hp model's just much bigger in inside diameter of course. Theres no real reason a slide shouldn't work? But if it seems like it's not reliable enough to get it or keep it running right......you may want to try going back to a butterfly style carb before you give up on the thing? Good luck guys and they're normally not worn out but the scrapers have a high tendency to stick into the Apexs on these mainly the corners and side seals rather than the main scrapers on the outside of the apex. If you get it apart and you can't move the corner rounds you might have to heat up the apex to get these round pars out but be very careful about the heat! You can easily destroy the spring tension from the heat!
Thanks for the info!
Looks like you were missing a side seal on one lobe, the waved spring appeared to be where the flat seal should have been.
A 1/2 corded drill hooked to that pulse pump shaft would of been quicker then pull starting. Also easier on ur arm lol
I've got a pull start for a Sachs 303 if that is helpful to you let me know
What year is that motor I like to find one for a mini bike swap
The carb is a Mikuni VM and used on pretty much every Japanese 2-stroke of the 60 and 7ties. Not rare at all, there are even Chinese copies available.
Arctic Cat may have quit using Wankel engines in 71 or 72 but I could be wrong there.
I know Arctic Cat switched 2 strokes from Kawasaki to Suzuki engines in 1975
How much did you pay for the engine ??? Lucky find for sure.
I would love a Mac101 2 stroke engine build.
We have a Westbend US 820 2 stroke project coming up!

Rotary takes more fuel that why there not so fuel efficiency! Try more starting fuel instead of bursts
I’ve got a 303 and a 292 wankle acetic cat engine sitting in the shelf If y’all would be interested
We're definitely interested! You can shoot us an email at build1break1repeat@gmail.com or send us a message on instagram or facebook and we'll get in touch
Vapor blast it!
Where do you find these engines!! I ben lookibg for awhile for maybe a furture mini bike
I heard someone say they show up on ebay from time to time
you can buy brand new rotary go kart engines. If i remember corectly they come in 200-300cc. So if you really want a rotary the go kart world could be an good place to start. Just google rotary go kart engines and you should find the brand of them.
Look at 1970's artic cat snowmobiles for sale, I find them for a couple hundred dollars here in PA and Ohio
Aixro XR50 is the name of the engine. They have been out for several years so with some looking it should be posible to find one used. And with it being made for racing go karts it should work perfect for mini bikes and other go kart builds

wheres the curly head dude?
\why don't you have the time, whats the rush.
We’re still in college so we only have time to work on the weekends sadly
When you buy a 46 year old engine on EBay stuff is gonna happen that requires labor and parts.
Richer is better. Km24 and km914 are heavy drinkers
you guys said u have spark but never really proved it apart from that shock incident but yet u repeated over and over u have spark ,,, nx time just show us that little spark flash , great vid otherwise
