Yep. Iron phosphate for slugs and Bt for cabbage worms can be found at Home Depot and Loews. If they don't have it, nurseries carry it. And you can get it on-line.
Thanks for the explaining the value of regular treatments. I got powdered Bt, which I found quite difficult to control. "Sprinkling" on the underside of leaves is... well, tricky at best. I was glad to hear you mention kale as a looper targe - I was surprised to see my kale being assulted! I assumed it was the looper, and you confirmed that for me. I was ready to give up on the cabbage family - now I know a better way to keep the little buggers at bay. Again, thanks!
A lot of the bugs/caterpillars just keep coming. The cabbage looper butterfly lays eggs April through October in my area. Bt does work though. But rain dose wash it off. So its a lot of reapplying.
i had two seperate planters of cabbage and only one was under attack. I tried talking to a horticulture major at my university and looking all over the web for an answer. Wish I had found this video sooner. I went with Franks red hot (sauce)... ended up killing off many of the leaves but the leaves killed were covered in looper eggs. They are currently stunted from the loopers, but are regenerating slowly and surely. nature is beautiful
Good info, will buy some BT. In the South it seems pests show up any time of the year. Early September hundreds of tiny black caterpillars started decimating all my green beans, and the cut worms make an appearance randomly all spring/summer/fall as well.
Bt really works. Just stay on a schedule Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. Anything you buy on Amazon helps The Rusted Garden when using my link. Ill be putting what I use in videos there for 2019. It is all set up by categories. Thanks. www.amazon.com/shop/garypilarchiktherustedgarden
OH thank you so much!!! I have been looking online for just such a easy remedy and I appreciate your knowledge! Thanks for the reply earlier and will go get some of this great green worm killer!!! Keep up the good work, LOVE your videos. ciao R
I just sprayed them with Br. Bronners peppermint castile soap because that's what I have at home. I watched the caterpillar after spraying and it did kill it. I never thought I would dislike butterflies haha I will get BT soon
These buggers have been quite a problem on my kale. I used BT often and it didn't seem to work. I did find a dead earthworm at the application site that appeared to die from a fungus/bacteria. I have had much better luck using a physical barrier (ag-15 row covers) in controlling this pest. I'm using both methods right now, but I don't honestly see any results from BT. I'd suggest that people use a barrier first and supplement with BT if needed.
I have to get this product! I caught a white moth with a butterfly net & it was gratifying to kill it! I have these same holes on the leaves of my Sweet 100 tomato plants. Could it be from the cabbage worm?
It is hard work. Bt works if you keep it on. Vacation makes this impossible. I tried mesh netting which was outstanding but a hole got on it and guess what. Next year I am doing combo.
Gary, when my row cover gets holes, esp. smaller ones (not rips), I use clear packing tape on the top side of the cover, dust the sticky side with DE, and it works great.
+jasonhw00 I dont use the Bt anymore as neem has been so effective. I would separate them though. I dont know how the oil and soap might affect the Bt.
So true though Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Sadly no. I use Sevin Dust the big gun. If I didnt I would never get squash. I carefully sprinkle it on the vine stem and grow them up cages. The dust is effective but should not be thrown all over the plant.
It's just language. Anyway worm and caterpillar are used by new gardeners looking for help. Also lots of things called worms like tomato hornworm. I have no sympathy for the white butterfly the lays green caterpillar eggs. But I give them plenty of food to flourish.
Larry Powell Neem oil. I sell that on my blog. www.therustedgarden.blogspot.com. Search my videos for neem oil and that iwll give you a good idea. Though I havent heard Bt is toxic.
No joke! You'll find them with fat bellies holding forks and steak knives! Thank you for the info, Gary! Every year I have a terrible time with them. Be gone, you evil creature!

I dont have experience with that but I imagine you need a contact spray that will kill the worms and eggs. Soap works mostly for soft bodied insects. Maybe someone else here can help you out.
Well... everything does something but you could try neem oil. I use that now instead of Bt and it is amazing. I sell it at my shop. www.therustedgarden.com

Interesting use of language... calling caterpillars 'worms'. These 'worms', as you call them tuen into the small white butterfly...& yes they use any plant in the cabbage family as larval food plants. I cover 75% of my broccoli, cabbage, etc & leave a few for the small whites to do their thing on. We have to share guys..& calling something a worm or a moth to demonise it so as to fit in to your scheme of things is just kidding yrself. Come on guys we share our lives with many other beings.
If you are getting lots of holes in your kale and cabbages this might be worth watching. Learn what the cabbage looper is and how to treat it.
So that is what causes that!
isn't BT toxic?
Thank you so much, I had no idea what to do. This is my first time gardening.
My kale is the best it has ever been. It works on the cabbage looper 100%.
It works!. Been using it regularly this year. Only damage is initial damage that told me they were here.
Yep. Iron phosphate for slugs and Bt for cabbage worms can be found at Home Depot and Loews. If they don't have it, nurseries carry it. And you can get it on-line.
It depends on how much more there is to form. If its just the outer leaves and you spray soon... you should be fine. Bt really works. Good Luck.
Thanks for the explaining the value of regular treatments. I got powdered Bt, which I found quite difficult to control. "Sprinkling" on the underside of leaves is... well, tricky at best.

Gary, I just found your channel and have subscribed. I'm looking forward to watching ALL your past and future videos.

this is probably what has been chewing on my brussel sprouts. the 7 dust didn't work so I bet this will
thanks
They are fine to pick by hand without a glove as long as you dont mind bugs.
hey gary did you knwo if there is a vehicle like milk or water with sugar that i can cultivate b.t?
John Leaf thats a good question. I dont know. If you find out please let me know. I would like to maintain my supply.
I just sprayed them with Br. Bronners peppermint castile soap because that's what I have at home. I watched the caterpillar after spraying and it did kill it. I never thought I would dislike butterflies haha I will get BT soon
Great! Good luck in your garden.

I do for stewing them down. I don't like eating them with salad. But cleaning them well is well fine. Id rather eat that then chemical sprayed greens.
I have found, my worm tea works pretty well on most plants, but the cabbage looper is a small problem. I may try this.........

Do u have any good tips or product for cucumber beetles??
hey all, i've a batch of self cultured lactobacillus, does that work on cabbage worms?
LOL! "psychotic looking butterfly" hahaha, that's funny!
And True!
Please check out my Seed & Garden Shop for your gardening needs www.therustedgarden.com
do you think it will help with the bore worm on squash.?
It doesnt kill earthwomrs. Not sure about every caterpillar. Bt is naturally in the soil. It has to be ingested by the culprit.
Where can i buy these from. Does home depot carry them?
Do you mix your BT and CP Neem in the same sprayer with your surfactant (dawn) or do you do separate spraying for IPM?
+jasonhw00 I dont use the Bt anymore as neem has been so effective. I would separate them though. I dont know how the oil and soap might affect the Bt.
What is Neem ?
The Psychotic looking butterfly :)
So true though

Can we pick the worms off the plant with our hands? Do I need to wear gloves?
Thank you for the great information! So helpful!
Sadly no. I use Sevin Dust the big gun. If I didnt I would never get squash. I carefully sprinkle it on the vine stem and grow them up cages. The dust is effective but should not be thrown all over the plant.
As always thanks again for your help!
Glad to help.
Appreciated!
Gary I have been using the neep & Castile soap and It's not working ~Is there anything that is non toxic that you can recommend?
What brand neem oil did you get? Is it cold pressed with azadirachtin in it? A product called Bt works too.
+Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) It's Up Nature Neem oil & yes it is cold press..~No, the oil did not get cold..
It's just language. Anyway worm and caterpillar are used by new gardeners looking for help. Also lots of things called worms like tomato hornworm. I have no sympathy for the white butterfly the lays green caterpillar eggs. But I give them plenty of food to flourish.
DOES BAKING SODA OR FLOUR WORK AT ALL?
I heard its not recommended and that its toxic any other ideas how to take care of the worms?
Larry Powell Neem oil. I sell that on my blog. www.therustedgarden.blogspot.com. Search my videos for neem oil and that iwll give you a good idea. Though I havent heard Bt is toxic.
+Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) Neem oil active ingredient is banned in England
+David63190 I have tried Neem oil, I am not impressed..
Can you use BT on cucumber plants?
Yep.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) great thanks!
I meant neem oil..not neep oil~sorry for the typo
What type of incect eats almost the entire leaf?
Big fat caterpillars... seriously.
Mine are all green, small, three to a plant with
no hair, fur ect. Got your vid, will do. Kevin
No joke! You'll find them with fat bellies holding forks and steak knives! Thank you for the info, Gary! Every year I have a terrible time with them. Be gone, you evil creature!

Amazon.com. I find it sometimes at Lowes and Home Depot but it varies State to State.
Thanks!!

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN so it is organic?

It's November and my morning glory and radishes are being eaten by tiny green worms... I guess I'm never going to be safe in Florida...
preach
Is there any other organic option?I have read that they found trace of BT in human stomach and cause issues as well for human and its not proven yet…
Well... everything does something but you could try neem oil. I use that now instead of Bt and it is amazing. I sell it at my shop. www.therustedgarden.com
Thanks : )
I dont think they eat tomato leaves. You have another invader I think.
A just death.
Nope. Not even a little.
