I admire your calmness! Lol. This just happened to me the other day for my broccoli, collards, and Chinese cabbage, and this is my first time gardening. I was almost short of calling the police because of how upset and confused I was (little dramatic, but hey, I wasn't so calm. lol). Thanks again for your videos!

I feel you! I'm laughing at your reply right now but when it happens I'm on full alert. And it doesn't have to be an infestation. I'm not fighting any fungus invasion right now just Japanese Beatles are a problem. Not an infestation but I'm on high alert and making up a neem oil spray. I'm just reviewing for what I should be doing just kn case.🤯

This is right on time video for me. As a new gardener I just hitting a place where I'm coming face to face with all the insect attacks. Thank you for the weapons to fight back! ❤❤❤❤❤
I know this is an old video, but I love that you showed a simple way to cook up all those leaves. I had no idea you could just bare the plant of leaves and still have new ones grow. Thanks for sharing.
I moved from the u.s. to Ecuador, and the bugs here are insane. I put in a raised bed garden and some spinach looking weeds sprang up and no bugs were eating them. So I pulled them up put them in a blender with water and sprayed my veg. plants with the liquid. The bugs must have thought that it was the weed. They left my plants alone.
I've noticed this as well, I also used to pull the weeds but I got lazy 1 yr and was behind and many were getting over 6". I noticed the bugs were eating certain weeds more than my plants so I left them. They still get alittle damage but not near as much as the weeds. I think I will try your trick as well.
Have grown baby bok choy for 2 years now, no problems. In 3rd year, these dastardly worms suddenly this week (March 6) decimated my entire crop before spring has even formally arrived in Zone 8A. The seedlings were just 3" tall, barely established and just beginning to grow in the garden at the end of mild winter. There are 3 overwintered adult plants purposely going to seed in the same bed - moths never touched them. Time to break out the Neem Oil for first time ever. Glad you're here with answers! New tomato, pepper, many other seed varieties from you are growing very well under grow lights right now awaiting warm weather.

My collards are being chewed to death by catapillars. So I went out and did as you suggested to strip the leaves off. I now have a collard stick farm with just the little growing baby buds. Spraying with neem oil is next. THank you for your help.

I had curly kale that was 5 feet tall and ABUNDANT. Then I noticed a few moths. A week later they were decimated. Was about to pull them up, but thought we'll, the roots are still good. Thank you. I'm glad I didn't pull up my giants. I will be ready next time!

Power washing my plants couple times a week keeps the frass (bug shit) off my rosemary, mint and basil. I love it when I get the plant big enough to be able to blast little nasty things away. I use the moth trap thing for my apple tree but I also randomly blast the tree with the hose sprayer almost every day after I see fruit form to keep the bugs off. I like washing stuff I plan to eat often. Bugs and slugs are relentless.

The glass house was an amazing invention in retrospect. Sun water nutrients ....avoidance of outside predators, Insects. I live in Melbourne suburb. The soil is clay , given freedom in mulch to allow saturation of water in hot Summers 🔥 There is a battle ongoing. Great Video, and like the trying to use non harsh pesticides. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. Sometimes you have to break down and spray them with the real chemical stuff, to get rid of the pests. Its a matter of deciding if you want a harvest or not. I have done peroxide, etc. etc.
Exactly! Start with least harsh and organic and work your way up if needed. Great approach. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualified purchases. OMG! This is perfect timing. Came back from vacation and saw the damage. We had a rain storm too. I was sooooo confused. I’ve got the Neem and Peppermint already. Inspect. Wash. Spray. THANK YOU!!
I believe hummingbirds eat whiteflies. If you can keep some hummingbird feeders around it might help. We had whiteflies on our grapevine after harvest and then a rain and the hummingbirds would go there and eat the whiteflies off of it.
When I first started gardening I was really discouraged at the number of setbacks from pests and disease. I tried all the remedies you see posted on these gardening channels but eventually I tired of keeping up with the mixes and applications. About the same time I started interplanting everything so that each bed had flowers, herbs , veg etc but no more than two of any kind of plant. I still get infestations but since everything is interplanted the problems don't spread, and since I'm not treating them the predator insects have come to expect the infestations and show up just in time. Maybe I'm just lucky but I tend to think all the cocktails concoctions and potions may not really be necessary.
Has alot to do with your location also I live in a agricultural town and my home sits between two massive cotton fields... when they spray or till up the fields it runs everything my way.
Yes. I don't like to spray too much and if I did it has to be natural. I find mother nature actually brings beneficial insects to balance it out. I grow many types of flowers, herbs, and plants just so that I get a diverse collection of insects. It is better than spraying. I also use beneficial nematodes spring and fall. If need be I will also release lacewings. You have to plant things that these insects like to eat and where they like to lay their eggs so you have a nice ecosystem going.
I couldnt find it for awhile. I found a homeade one thats been working quite well. I c mineral oil, 1/4 c of dishsoap(dawn). Thats the concentrate.: take 1 tblsp of concentrate add to 4 cups of water. In a sprayer. Shake before and during use.
Lol you get used to it. But since that video, I manage them much better. Love BT! My personal experience is that it works as well or better than the neem oil. And, if you don't care for the smell of neem oil, it lacks that icky smell, is more pleasant to use. I've often wondered why this channel never mentions it, so many other gardening channels support its use.
Hi Joyce. It is a bacteria that destroys the digestive systems of caterpillars. BT is short for Bacillus thuringiensis. While it is a killer for caterpillars, it is totally harmless to anything else. It is listed as organic. There are a variety of products that use it. Here is a link to one on Amazon. www.amazon.com/Bonide-Chemical-802-Bacillus-Thuricide/dp/B009ONSQ6O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1533048970&sr=8-2&keywords=bt
One thing I have learned this growing season is that snails and earwigs love Collards, Cabbage and Lettuce! They gave me a run for my money this year. Now that it is much cooler the Greens have gotten their second wind and are growing their tails off. The cool weather has absolutely helped to stop the insect attacks my greens are all clear now. I had used neem oil and garlic earlier however we had a lot of rain in August which was great for insects and great washing away the neem oil and garlic!

Jerry Baker a garden genius used a cap full of lemon scented dish soap and lemon scented ammonia in a spray bottle. Fill with water and spray the whole plant. I used it every week. No bugs. Won't harm the fruit.
My exact issue. Cabbage worms eating the leaves. I escorted them to the lawn for the birds to feast on. I'll have to cut back more leaves I guess. You should try adding turnips to your dish instead of potatoes. Plenty cheap, seems no one eats them.

They are hitting me hard in my area. They are very smart, they typically go to the bottom leaf. I almost passed out today when i saw a tomato hornworm in my tomato patch!!!
We just put three homemade solar fountains around outside and two birdbaths and a bird feeder. Humming bird feeders everywhere and they need the insects sooooo, they solve the problem naturally. Compost leaves on plants to make rich soil and feed your plants or composting tea. Circle of life. All natural. Let a few plants go to seed for the birds also, they love eating bugs in my garden and it's doing great.

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) My bell pepper plants all have holes on them and I haven’t even gotten a pepper yet. Still take off all the leaves? I have Neem oil and am making the spray today. It’s my first garden and I’m worried I’ll lose my crop ☹️
Love your video! The Neem oil video was so helpful. I live in Puerto Rico and as I said in that video (Neem Oil video), we have a huge problem with our citrus trees. I did the Neem oil solution (1 spoon of Neem oil + 1 spoon of soap in 1 gallon of water. Because our hot weather I was scared that 2 spoons would be too much for the leaves). It has work amazingly. I’m also using it on my soursop tree which has all kind of pest and fungus. 🤦🏻♀️ I’m on the second round of the treatment cycle. The only thing is that I can’t wait 5 days to spray the trees because the amount of insect gets out of control again. I think is because our hot weather and the rain. It rains almost every day where I live. Thanks so much for charing your knowledge. ❤️😊

Hi Gary! We would sure love to have some of that rain you got! Yes, it surely does bring out the insects. "That white moth that flies around psychotically". Very good! LOL!
Thank you Gary, we were out there last night cutting leaves off our pumpkins & butter nut squash, we found some with holes also & actually saw the catapillars , I've ordered neem oil from you , but my husband went & bought a 3 gallon sprayer , some say baking soda & water , some say hydrogen proxide & water or milk...please help , I don't want my granddaughters hurt ,plus this is my 1st year regardening since we lost our Daughter April ann Ulrich at age 19 Criminally , I need these pumpkins to survive . God bless you 🙏🏻 Josette Tharp Montgomery County, Texas
His videos are popping up a lot on my feed so I've been watching them...have you guys noticed how his plants always have "problems" when he shows them, and always says stuff like "its because we had a lot of rain, too much sun, etc." lol. Shouldn't he have a better garden if he is an expert?
I am an organic gardener. I mix up my veg and herb plantings with beneficial insect and bird attracting plants, I try to limit mono culture plantings, that way I have a better chance of keeping insect outbreaks under some control. I also encourage small lizards and frogs by giving them areas of suitable habitat, they help to keep insect populations in check. A method I use is to randomly place brassica plants in the garden and plant nasturtiums with the brassicas. White cabbage butterflies prefer to lay their eggs on the nasturtium’s. You can also eat the leaves and flowers of the nasturtiums. I rarely use sprays, but if I do they are always organic based. Keeping the natural balance in your garden is key to a productive garden.

I did research on line every year had problems with caterpillars I read on line some lady said if you have problems with caterpillars but lime in the soil that is where the larva live. I did it the next year and it works
Gary very informative video. One small point of interest. In the south the large white flying insect is called a moth because we associate crop damage with moths. However in the north the insect is called a butterfly which it is a true butterfly a cousin to the clouded sulfur.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) do you think it will help deer be less interested in my garden ? I take other measure inalucing fencing and netting but the occasional high spirited one will get past it and eat my tomatoes

well the leaves where already going to be harvested anyways so just get the really damaged ones and compost them and cook the not so damaged ones. quite easy if you ask me.
@@batenkait0s657 Is it okay to compost leaves that have a ton of eggs? I always throw them in the city compost can but thought you wouldn't want them in your yard.

I’m new at this.....i appreciated the full explanation. Gary, Thank you for all the info...and really showing the leaves. It was really helpful to me! I am just now starting to grow seeds for a garden but this summer i have been “practicing” with hydrangeas, hibiscus and some herbs that have been hosting THE BEST habitat for white flies, “chewing insects”, and some worms.....i am seeing ALL the things you showed...even the yellowing....For the hydrangeas and hibiscus if i pull off all the leaves that have been chewed on it will look like a stick.....do i still need to remove all the chewed leaves? What about yellow ones?

Thank you!!! Really enjoyed the video and loved how you didn't rattle on OFF topic. Those white flies must of escaped from hell this year 2021, because they did some serious damage this year, but you are correct ..a couple of days of rain and they GO TO TOWN.!! At least it looked like they didn't eat your Mint plant they thought mine was their nursery!!! Great video!

Very simple solution: really cheap PVC hoop house. I had to cover my cabbage family bed, kale included because of below zero temperatures warning after I planted them. Decide it to leave up after, to see what would happen. Less work than taking it down. That was a two months ago. Today I raised the fabric to water them, everything looks nice and healthy and the broccoli is starting to form, the cabbages are getting big and it's only June. No chewing and no worms. And crazy weather here in Minnesota.
Thanks Please visit my seed shop www.therustedgarden.com for Neem Oil, Peppermint & Rosemary Oil for pest and disease management. Calcium Nitrate for Blossom End Rot and for Seeds and Seed Starting Supplies. Thanks so much!
Re PVC hoop house, thinking to go with wire instead, but had a few questions... When do you put up the hoop barrier protection, do you leave it on 24/7 through entire crop season or only for a certain amount of time? What if you put it up and trap bugs inside? Don't some of them come up from the soil? I've been researching hoop netting vs organic spraying and trying to learn the differences, pros & cons for treating our first garden pest issues. It seems it would cost over $400 in netting to cover each of our beds and that doesn't include other materials. Would natural spraying accomplish the same thing with diligent application? Some gardeners swear by garlic/pepper spray, while other gardeners swear it doesn't work and burns plants/leaves. My tomatoes are taking a hit from worms after a lot of rain. I sprayed them down tonight with cayenne pepper spray, hoping that helps. Also have some chipotle chili peppers I thought may be worth experimenting with. Tried neem spray last week but it burned the lower leaves even though it was low concentration recipe. Any idea why? I'm not really crazy about having white fabric covering all the plants. Ideally, I want to be connected to and see the garden, not clouds of white synthetic fabric. But if they work for short periods of time, that could be tolerable. Does netting work with everything in the garden? Tomatoes get so tall, how are they protected throughout their life cycle? Thanks so much!!
Great video - Interesting that I do not see Bacillus Thuringiensis Spray mentioned in the video or comments. this is by far the best way to treat the worms for me using a natural method. I spray this on after a rain and once a week or so and when I am good at keeping up no worms. Still have the white flies and the water spray does help. I am hoping to try the neem oil to see if that is a prevention for white flies.

I found one of my Brussel sprouts covered in the 2nd caterpillar you showed. I killed them all and sprayed all my Brussels with organic neem. Now on the other side of my house I found a bunch on 2 of my 6 tomato plants. I repeated the steps for them. Now on my biggest strongest tomato plant in another location had a couple on it and I’ve been noticing every day more and more yellow and brown leaves. It’s starting to look like bad news. And the stems or vines look bumpy. This is my first garden but does that sound like blight to you? My pole bean leaves started turning rusty and yellow right after they started flowering and right after I found aphids. I sprayed them off with the hose for a few days until I got my neem oil in the mail. It killed the aphids but everyday more and more rusty leaves and I only get to pick a bean about every 5 days. They’ve been probably flowering for a month now. Is it a lost cause? The other day I noticed all these white roote like things growing out of what seemed the the inside of the bean vine. Tons of them on the last several inches of the vines the next day they seemed to be almost wilted, the white root like things. It was very bizarre looking. Also I’ve got several different pepper plants planted in a couple of pallets. They were all dark green and healthy now the leaves are light green on one of them the leaves are curling upward. I read online it could be any nmbr if things. I’m thinking maybe they nutrients. Which nmbrs on the fertilizer are best for pepper plants? Should I break away all the Brussels sprouts leaves to get rid of any hiding caterpillars because they are planted pretty close together. Thanks for all your videos and helpful advice. I wish I knew exactly what to do all the time like you do. Like I said this is my first garden and it’s been nothing but a battle with big destruction the whole time! Everything always looks so healthy until it starts producing then Bam- the bugs come and do their damage before I know what has happened and now what’s left of my squash and zucchini are getting powdery mildew. I cut away the leaves and spray with baking soda and it still spreads. I can’t win!!! I’m just about over it!!
Vine bumpy stems is normal as they are root nodes and come when its humid and lots of rain. Tomato lives can yellow and die of in heat as they try and manage hight temps. A good water soluble fertilizer, 1x can help right now.I would write down the dates of when you started noticing these things for planning next year. A balance water solublle for your peppers too. But if you have had heat, rain and humidity... just stay steady. You will still get production. Wish I could help more.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) I'm kind of unsure what water soluble fertilizer looks like. All I ever see is granules. We have had a lot of rain recently. Like 2 or 3 days in a row and we always have high humidity. South East TN is always super hot and humid in the summer. The other tomato leaves on the other plants aren't turning yellow and brown really. But a lot of the green tomatoes on them have stayed green forever! You help more than you know trust me. Ive never seen anyone so knowledgeable about gardens before and I have learned so much from your videos. I will Google water soluble fert. Is there a certain strength (those 3 nmbrs) I should get? And also can I use the same strength for my pepper plants? Thanks so much Gary!
Typically any product that says 1 tablespoon to 1 gallon of water. You just pour it on the plant roots. Organic water soluble hover around 5-5-5. Chemical types are well above 10-10-10. Both work. If you get NPK well over 10's use 1/2 dose. Save yourself some money.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) I have plenty of the granular 10 10 10 left over from when I first started my garden I also have some I think it is 3 5 2 granular. I read today 2!different sites for pepper care use 15 15 15 and anothe site said 15 30 15. I was like wow that’s a big difference so I thought I would wait to see what you said. I’ll look for some water soluble fertilizer. again thank you

Hi Gary, great video very helpful as I am experiencing these issues now on kale and cabbage. Unlike kale, should we just spray cabbage leaves with neem oil without removing the chewed leaves?
You can. But you can also remove some beat up leaves. If the heads of cabbage look good, I dont worry too much about the other leaves. Cabbage will get picked, my kale stays in all summer long Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

It happens. I have whiteflies again. I am going to try and new spray on them.

Not calling the police 🤣🤣🤣. I feel the same way with my kale plant right now and these wretched worms!

Thank you! I finally reclaimed my kale from the bugs eating it. I'm in MD too and have the same pests. So helpful!!!
Very wise

Genius!
Wow!!! Is all I got...
What a great idea. I noticed the bugs don’t touch my spring onions so maybe I’ll try your idea 🤔
It happens.

My collards are being chewed to death by catapillars. So I went out and did as you suggested to strip the leaves off. I now have a collard stick farm with just the little growing baby buds. Spraying with neem oil is next. THank you for your help.

Thanks so much

takes alot of determination and time to maintain.

This video is so awesome! I'm going to save my mother in law's kale bed today!!
I have plenty of wasp residing around my backyard fence. And my vegetables never had a single problem with worms.
I want to buy your wasps
They have some uses then lol
Cool. Didn't know this. I have 3 or 4 different bees around all season. Hardly have any destroyed stuff!!!
You did it right, interplanting others is good, stable echo system

My garden birds there take care of these.
Neem oil is natural way to control everything!!! You find in Home Depot 2 spoon in one gallon of water 💦
IT IS NOT WORKING, PERIOD
Thank you! You have taught me so much! Just today I noticed something was eating my kale leaves
You were so calm and didn't show any annoyance. I would have been bawling.
Lol you get used to it. But since that video, I manage them much better.

BT is the bomb! I feel like I'm constantly battling some kind of pest, you get rid of one and another takes its place. Thank goodness we have you or else I'd have no garden left as it would've been completely eaten up by pests this year already! Have a great Gary :)

I like BT for caterpillars. This bacteria destroys their digestion, and has no effect on beneficials. Thank you Gary for all the great tips.
I have used it before. It is very effective.
Love BT! My personal experience is that it works as well or better than the neem oil. And, if you don't care for the smell of neem oil, it lacks that icky smell, is more pleasant to use. I've often wondered why this channel never mentions it, so many other gardening channels support its use.
Sorry if this stupid but what's BT?
Thanks Joe Pacholik
Thank you for this video. Those caterpillars have eaten many of my kale plants. Hope it works.
Baited snail and slug baits are golden.

Hormworms are scary LOL.

His videos are popping up a lot on my feed so I've been watching them...have you guys noticed how his plants always have "problems" when he shows them, and always says stuff like "its because we had a lot of rain, too much sun, etc." lol. Shouldn't he have a better garden if he is an expert?
I know!!!
Thanks.

Lime also raises the pH in the soil, could screw up the growing of different vegs.
Nope lime my garden to death nope dont work
Gary very informative video. One small point of interest. In the south the large white flying insect is called a moth because we associate crop damage with moths. However in the north the insect is called a butterfly which it is a true butterfly a cousin to the clouded sulfur.

Thanks

I am hoping to try the neem oil to see if that is a prevention for white flies.
nematodes can be used on 2oo insect pests!!! I never spray anything in my yard!!! They kill fleas and ticks and my puppy is free of pests as well!

I’ll look for some water soluble fertilizer. again thank you
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) also I will use for peppers and tomatoes alike correct?
1/4 inch hardware cloth over frames for the cabbage caterpillats works perfect...you can sit and take pleasure watching them try to get in, haha...Creator bless...doug

Cabbage will get picked, my kale stays in all summer long
