I like the idea of using an extremely easy and stupid exploit that would straight up kill you in the original game, to make a secret area, that's pretty cool actually
I think the idea of secret zones could be use for it's own thing. Imagine a Sonic game where depending on what route you choose, you get multiple variants of a single adventure, secret bosses and endings.
Sonic Adventure; had six different "routes" of the same adventure. One route for each playable character. Of which unlocked both, an additional route and secret boss battle. Sonic Adventure 2; had two different "routes" of the same adventure. Each of which containing three playable characters. After which the player gains access to one final route, that culminates in a face off against the secret boss. Sonic Heroes; had four different "routes" of the same adventure. Each of which containing three interchangeable characters. Where after completion, a secret "route" becomes available to the player. Containing all four previous teams of three interchangeable characters, as well as an additional team consisting of three "Super" characters. Shadow the Hedgehog had a multitude of "routes" of the same adventure, consisting of one playable character. Whereby another route becomes accessible upon completion. Granting the player a secret boss fight. Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) had three different "routes" of the same adventure, consisting of one playable character each. Where, you guessed it; both another route, and secret boss fight becomes available to the player.
