I could see many imperfections in that one coat you did - you need two coats on that to take out the imperfections and get it really smooth.
I've been using this technique to fix older plaster houses for a few years now. It works and any novice can do it. The one thing that I do differently is that I simply use the blade to scrape ALL the mud off. No finesse needed but you will need at least two coats. The houses I've been doing this on are very wavy plaster damaged by sitting empty in unheated houses. I've needed three coats on them but they come out perfectly flat. Even a child could be taught to scrape it all down tight. No finesse anywhere.
My dad is a retired painting contractor and he used to do a lot of high end jobs in New York City where he had to skim coat entire walls and ceilings and he never rolled on the joint compound but he always told me that everyone has their own way of doing things and at the end of the day, if the job is done right that's what is most important.
I tried the roller also, and didnt like it haha So I just use a hawk and apply it that way. Maybe I'll try the roller technique again on my next project at the house :)
@@RUZTY1311 Dont do it it will crack... The coat is too thin with roller, and most are just doing one coat.
You don't appreciate this trade until you have to do it yourself on one of your own DIY renos, and that's when you get a firm understanding that it's not all what it's cracked up to be. You guys are amazing at doing it. You make is look so easy. A real art of the trade. Thanks for sharing this video.

I am a self taught self motivated painter..march of 2022 will be my second full year in business for myself and last year I did about 70k$ worth of work and the current job I'm on now is a whole house of wall paper over unsealed drywall..I agreed to do one bedroom to see how it would go and just as I thought..it's a time consuming nightmare..and while I'm no fly by night guy I have never done a full skim coat job..and thanks to what I already know and understand and most definitely with the help of your videos..I am no longer worried about the task ahead of me..that k you Paul for Shari your expertise and wisdom to us dedicated folk who have no one to teach us things we didn't know 👍👍💪💪
I'm not a pro drywaller but used to remodel kitchens, baths, and basements so I've done hundreds of sheets in various remodel projects. I took a 6" x 20" piece of stainless steel sheet that I bent the corners up on to use as a knockdown knife. It works fantastic. On my 12" knife I also use an angle grinder with a flap disc and slightly round over the corners. I profile it starting about 1/2" from the edge so it first very very gradually fades into the corner, then has the radius profile. Once hit with the flap disc, I finish sand both sides with 420 grit to remove the burr. It REALLY helps when skim coating like this to not see edge lines. I use pressure feathering techniques too, but that faded knife edge works wonders when you're a little sloppy with the hand pressure. I keep my 10" knife with one sharp corner for getting into wall and ceiling corners when needed. On the 6" I keep both sides sharp 90's.
Wet the Roller first. Leve just a little bit of water in the nap. And the Mud won't fall off of it 💪👍

Everytime I do one of these, I always think I should've installed new dryway. But then I do another😁. I only do flat finish and though I think Im getting a Paul Peck finish. the flashlight test shows how much I suck at it. It typically takes me a good 2-3 coats with touchups and way too much sanding. The finish product passes the flashlight test with flying colors which I guess if you're a diyer is all that matters. Paul Peck's skills with the blade sets a high bar.🙂

Paul, I've also used this method to cover the walls and joints after bedding the tape on new work. It works great with two people.

DIYer here. The ceiling kicked my butt. Other than being less than a beginner, the indirect lighting I also installed revealed all the flaws of my work. I ended up covering the ceiling with ship-lap. Not to be deterred, I plan again to finish the ceiling of my garage. This technique you shared will go along way. Thank you!

Great video. A lot easier than putting the compound on by hand... This way is faster and smoother...
Dude, so I got these special rollers that are for mud and they are amazing. Used them to load butt and bevel joints on 30 to 35' foot walls from scissor lifts. So many advantages. Light weight, small and easy to maneuver around in the cage and up in the tops. Really a huge help. All you need is a bucket of mud with you and that's it. No boxes or tubes to load, far reach and super fast. The different sizes of rollers and one special roller for corners is just insane.

Hey Paul. I'm from the UK London and I eventually thought I'd try this out after watching your videos. I done my first skim coat on a bad ceiling today with this roller method. . It had loads of imperfections. I have to say that ceiling is looking very good now. I used easi fill and thinned it down to yogurt like consistency and rolled it on. I then used my 12" taping knife to smooth it out. Looks perfect 👌👌
Knauff does a product called "pro roll" in the UK which is a bit pricey but is supposed to be a roll on product. I've done a room with it and it's a good finish

Good work. You're doing the world a service by showing this. I think if I did this for a living, I'd put a pole on that drywall knife, or whatever tool I used. I did my own ceilings more-or-less this way and got used to bearing down on the leading side the same way. At times, I've also used plastic knives with the corner on one side cut to a rounded edge, like that of a pool trowel. I'm not a fan of skip-trowel finishes, so I did end up doing some sanding, but I also found that a second coat made with joint-filler thinned with paint got rid of a lot of subtle imperfections without sanding. Also, if the original finish is really rough, a regular plastering trowel or even a pool trowel does have the advantage of being able to ride over the bumps with less chattering: whatever works.

Thank you! I used the wet and scrape method to get ride of popcorn "balls" and now am attempting joint compound. Because the estimate to have someone else do it was way beyond my budget for this project, watching you will make the rest of my practice (the bathroom is my practice ceiling) in the family room much faster!
Just love this idea! I am not a dry wall specialist (renovation generalist) but getting the muck up there over a decent area before it starts to dry off is always a struggle... I never seem to be happy with the result to the point where I stop messing about with it!
Use "Extratime Plaster Retarder"
A diy here but have done a fair amount of hang tape finish. Your mud is probly too thick. Needs to be like pancake batter. Like when you use a pump to fill boxes.
I'm finishing my basement and am currently working on finishing the drywall in the bedroom. It's taking forever. There's a butt joint that goes down the center of the room the long way. I had to feather it out really wide to hide it. I did two coats of mud so far and sanded it smooth. It was torture - so much back and neck pain. Ouch! It still needs one more finish coat and I think I'm going to try using a roller to get the mud on and then skim it off flat. I think that will be the fastest way to do it and will produce the best results. I can't wait to be done with this so I can start painting.

Dad finished drywall for 45 years, and I did it for 20 years, only time we rolled mud on was for texture, or swirl.
It would be beneficial to tell your viewers to sand the ceiling or at least run your trowel over the ceiling to knock off nubs and little protrusions so when you skim it won’t chatter and screw up your job.

Starting on this today. 1 face is roughly 8 ft by 8 ft. I appreciate the guidance on doing a three-by-five foot section at a time. I was going to do the entire wall and then skim coat. I may need to setup / build some staging.

Nice smooth touch. Question please: 1) i thought it was better to skim in two passes. The 2nd pass being perpendicular. 2) do you water down the compound?, and 3) what's you thoughts on level 5 to skim? thanks!
Graco makes a pump sprayer that will spray the joint compound. I think it is a mark5 or something like that. I think spraying would be faster if you were doing all the walls

Diy-er. I only have a mud pan, tiling trowel (I load it with mud and use it like a hawk) and a 4" and 2" taping knife. Although it's been a pain in the ass, I've managed to finish and perfectly smooth a few walls in my house. Will definetly be getting a bigger (10"-12") knife.

Hey Paul, thanks for sharing your drywall knowledge. My question is if I'm going to skim coat my ceiling and walls going up a stairway should I do the ceiling first, let dry and then do the walls or can I do the ceiling and wall all at once?

I've heard that if you add a cup of dish soap to that when you mix it up the mud it helps keep from bubbling up and will come out smoother. And gives you a little bit more working time before it drys up.
I've never actually tried this I'm a Mason not a drywall guy.
Paul , took out a built in tub /shower, trying to blend , new drywall , with old , the old has an orange finish , its a small bath, I want a flat finish, ceiling only. This may work , skim coat , I see the seam , bettween the old & new, Thanks, Tom

Im a new home owner with walls and ceilings im repairing room by room. Im on the bathroom now and the precious owner had nightmare taste in wall paint and texturing. Im still scraping and sanding to get the walls and ceiling even. Im going to try this method to smooth everything out. I hope it goes well. This by far is the worst room of the house.

Nice work sir. Question: how do you treat the “washboard” as seen at 5:36? Those areas always create extra work for me, and I think it’s caused by standing the blade up and not keeping it at a shallow angle. What say you?

currently work for a gc but worked for painters for years as well.. i can hang sheet rock and do all drywall work before spackle..my boss will tape coat and finish and i will sand and paint but i just don't do any of the spackleing..have done a few small tape coats for walls that were not getting painted just required a tape coat but always feel my spackleing is not great so always like to watch spackleing videos to learn..#drywalltube
Can I do this over popcorn crap?
It's better if popcorn finish is removed first, over time some popcorn looses its adherence to the ceiling... but before you do that, need to test for asbestos. If all clear then get a gardening pump sprayer and spray lightly with clean water to soften up the popcorn (do not saturate) and scrape away with spatula or a popcorn ceiling removal scraper from your local hardware store (Home Depot has them in the paint section) By doing this you reduce dust and it's super easy removal. Oh, if its been painted over, then good luck because water will not penetrate the paint.

I just dump the excess back into the bucket. The re used mud might begin to get stiff. I then just dump a half cup of water in the bucket and do a quick mix with the roller.

Working on knockdown walls and ceilings that have had the popcorn removed. Customer wants light dash everywhere.
I am a DIYer, with a big list from my wife. You had to have left something out of your videos. I tired it and did not come close to what you are doing. It would not have been the 25 plus years experience would it? I use The USG Green Joint compound because I saw you use it for another video skim coating. I will try the plus three, have plenty of wallpapered walls to practice with. Question. I get a lot of bubbles on the surface, and even if I use it straight (not diluted) to go over the areas with bubbles I still get some. If I use the smaller tubs of premixed, it is thicker and covers the bubbles with not problems. And suggestions? you do a great job and are truly a master. Wish you worked in our area
Just put a liquid dish soap like Palmolive put like a cup of soap to a 4 gallon mud and mix it that'll help to minimize the bubbles.

Oh boy I got problem with my ceiling :it's too rough It's not popcorn ,it's frickin nightmare.Some guy asked me for 1500 do do stucco on it.He told me 4 buckets of stucco,plus whatever other material jeez bazeez .I ll try on my own,I am not sure sure about scraping some of it because it is soo rough that if I don't I might need a lot of mud up there.

I have been skimcoating all the popcorn ceilings 8 inches from the wall, because the previous home owners abused the ceilings where it goes over the wall.
I wanna finish the 8 inch lines on the ceiling with nice tiny trim to cover the line between the popcorn and the 8 inch skimcoated part on the ceiling 👍🏻

DIYer. Thanks for simple explanation and demonstration of skimcoating. I have a ceiling crack to repair and then match texture. Do I need to skim coat the crack area?
Thank you for this straightforward, helpful (!) video.( I am a DIY guy with limited experience). How do you get the joint compound to the right consistency without a complicated "parts per" formula? I love the idea of just mixing it up in the container and putting the roller right into that mix. I'm just unsure of how to make sure I don't over-dilute it. Hope you're able to answer this. :)
In a another video, you used a 32 In skimming tool- I checked your website and couldn't find it but I do see other makers such as Level5 - Very expensive and DeWalt - Could I use this same process with the roller and the skimming tool ?? Seems it would be easier for a person like me who is ONLY a DIY'er not an expert..Thought I would ask.Thanks

Really good technique. That how I apply the mud to do a stomp texture I been finishing for rite at 40 yrs lol. Peace bro. When rolling it on. Go the opposite way to assure even application. Ole boy can swing tha 12 inch knife lol
Paul I am removing popcorn ceiling. Most is fairly smooth and doesn’t have any tears or anything I can see. My question is do I need to skim coat the entire ceiling or should I just coat what may need to be and then sand and paint?
