As a university professor preparing my seniors to transition to the work world, I’ve noticed one of their biggest shifts is wardrobe - from relaxed college student in jeans, T-shirts, and überly trendy pieces to put-together professionals in clothes that communicate the right message to potential employers. Your videos are among those I recommend when they consider their professional attire. You give practical suggestions that allow them to build base wardrobes while maintaining their style. Thank you!

Thank you for affirming that not everyone likes a white button down shirt. I have always love knits and felt more comfortable and polished in them. I also struggled with the blazer and found my style is cardigans. I especially love WHBM cardigans with 3/4 sleeves. They add the personality to my classic pieces and give me that third piece to finish an outfit! Great job, Audrey...I love your videos💚

I LOVE what you said about being honest with yourself and not copying someone else. Oh, if I only had followed that advice when I was young, I would have saved thousands. Admittedly, my style has changed over the years and I’ve become more classic as I’ve aged, but even if one’s style changes, being true to yourself is absolutely key. More wisdom and another great video from you, Audrey.

Audrey, I like the: don't go out shopping, and the: don't copy. I would add: allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them. Don’t mind, enjoy and improve.

I've only recently 'discovered' you and have found your videos both enjoyable to listen to but also incredibly helpful. This year marks a year of having had lost nearly 50 lbs and keeping it off all that time. So I'm completely starting over with my wardrobe but wish to keep it simple, yet classic and versatile. I've already taken in many of your tips helping me recreate my wardrobe. Just today, I found 3 quality (pure wool and one wool/cashmere) blazers at my local thrift shop! Perfect for my new style.

I have started my capsule. 3/4 of my cabinet is full of white shirts. Ever since i was a child, ive always been drawn to white shirts. The struggle is to find other things that would work since i live in a tropical country. I love your videos. You are clear, concise and direct to the point and polished. And intelligent. Your thoughts are well organised. Oh love your voice too. Its soothing. Most videos i dont finish watching because they tend to ramble.

Ditto! You are a calming sweet girl and I so enjoy your videos so much. I especially like to see you model your wardrobe and show us the subject of each video! I need the visual! Love!!
My wardrobe is a closet full of "NOISE" as you put it. I shop second hand stores, so I really shop for clothes several times a month so I am always filling my closet with clothes and always taking clothes out to recycle. I really have never had basic pieces I hold on to. And my closet is color color color!! I have white shirts but seldom wear them. When I do it is with colorful bandanas. wear denim and bandanas 5 times a week, so I guess that is my personal style! Thanks for you sweet videos. Im 62 years old and you have helped me in my search for my personal style. Wish I could have you in my closet for a few hours!

You don't have to wear white if you don't want to. Personally I don't like black. Too dull. (I'm a red fanatic.) But I can see how black and white would really suit Audrey.

Audrey, you are so right about basics. I have a couple decades on you and it is amazing how well made basics will almost pay for themselves. I have a beautiful leopard pencil skirt that I have had forever and it is still beautiful. And of course, animal print is a big trend again.

With me approaching my later 20’s, I’ve found that my style is still fun, but also laid back and classy in some ways as I want to embrace those basic colors (black and white) more often now. Your videos have really helped me to find out what it is I love and don’t love, so I appreciate your tips very much, Audrey! 😊

Also, have "outdoor clothes" and "indoor clothes". One rule I was taught religiously by my mom and grandma was to ALWAYS change into indoor clothes the moment I got back home from school (clothes that are comfy, unrestricted and can be soiled; clothes you can play in and cook in; and no, they dont necessarily need to be sweat pants) and to save the "outdoor clothes", the best ones (for you always want to put your best foot forward going out, even if it's just to the grocery store) only for work, school, socializing. Then, to invest in good quality pieces and take good care of them. But then, I am European and we tend to dress better generally speaking. I was shocked when I moved to the US some years ago and noticed students in running shorts and trainers to classes at University! our standard uniform was always a blazer and a shirt. Or the use of pyjamas during daytime or when shopping!....many differences in style between Europe and US for sure but I am glad that Audrey but classy on the map again - for the US peeps at least :)

I love aprons! It’s fun switching between professional-cook looking tailored ones and flouncy colorful ones with patterns. I use them when cooking and sometimes leave them on when eating a particularly messy meal, like pasta with red sauce.

Roxana Staton True! That's one of the things I figured out on my own when I started spending a little more on clothes, for fear of everything that can and will happen when one decides to start making dinner, eating and hanging out in the living room in 'going out' clothes, I change immediately when I get home, I specifically bought lounge wear just for this. Now i Apply the principle to all clothing regardless of cost.

Thank you for talking about the basic white shirt. For me I love idea of it but white always gets ruined- it'll get some kind of stain always no matter how I try! I also have small adorable, yet grubby children so white is very much out of the question! After all these years it's good to hear a concise explanation of how to be true to you and pick a great wardrobe.

It really does come down to what fit and features you prefer! For example I feel terribly uncomfortable in all skirts except a pencil skirt which looks great and feels great. It took a while to figure this out. I love your suggestion of wearing the basics you have and taking notes on what works and what doesn’t so we can avoid future mistakes. This works. Great video.

only now i feel like i have a clear personal style and know what i like. i don't regret wearing trendy items in my teens and early 20's because i felt good in them, youthful and cool. my clothes were all over the place then colour and style wise, but now i have a colour palette i stick to and know what i like only the idea and look of, and what I'll actually wear. i still have room to grow but only a few years ago i started having the clothes that are "me", and i add a few interesting items to those but they still fit my style and colour palette. however I'm still on the hunt for the black dress, i feel like it might take a while to find it :))

Love this! Particularly the reminder to personalise. I LOVE white collared long sleeve button-downs on other people, but they always feel uncomfortable and impractical for me, and my few attempts to have them in my wardrobe have been failures. They look elegant on others, but feel frumpy and illfitting on me. I've come to love a long sleeve blouse with a high collar, no front buttons, and a simple button at the back of the neck. It is in a more forgiving style and sturdy (heavier-weight, non-see-through) fabric, yet doesn't wrinkle and look a mess after 2 minutes, and actually gets worn and enjoyed!

  • @Kelbel5995
    @Kelbel5995 6 лет назад +8

Fantastic as usual--I really appreciate the focus on building a wardrobe around pieces that you will love and wear for years, instead of whatever item happens to be trendy at the moment. Far less wasteful, and far more stylish!
I'm also so glad you mentioned that wardrobe essentials are different for every person, because I think that many people are confused by the concept. (I know I was at first--I definitely thought I needed the exact white button-down included on most lists.) I've realized I personally don't like white button-downs in crisp, cotton fabric. They're just not my style. BUT I found the perfect classic white button-down...in silk! It feels way more "me," yet functions exactly the same in my wardrobe as a cotton one would. Same with the black tee/pants/skirt: these show up on almost every essentials list, but I HATE black. So I have grey and navy instead. I've been doing the same with every other "essential" (evaluating whether it's me, considering how it can be worn with other items, and tailoring it to my personal style), and now I'm WAY happier with my wardrobe than I've ever been.

Another person I follow on YT does vids on minimalism and she was talking about purging and she said to get rid of clothes that fit your fantasy self and that really stuck with me. I want to be Parisian chic and boho and all those things Pinterest makes look perfect but that's not me. Buying a boho dress won't make me boho since I won't wear it because it's not my style. Embracing the fact that I love neutrals, hate bright colors or patterns, and like clean cuts is a big step to shopping and accepting myself at the same time.

    • @beth12svist
      @beth12svist 6 лет назад +11

That's good advice... unless you are actually working towards becoming the fantasy you.
By which I probably mean something else - maybe I should call it an "aspirational you". Where the key is finding items that both fit the fantasy and your actual lifestyle - like, for me, A-line skirts *with pockets*.

It’s interesting how the white button down shirt always comes up as a staple. Dress culture in Australia is very casual so even in many office jobs you would feel overdressed in one. At least that’s why I don’t own one but I have recently purchased a more casual white blouse to feel a bit more dressy everyday. Also feeling inspired to own my classic style even if I do feel more “formal” than others. Really enjoying all your videos- both classy and practical.

Yes Audrey many times I have purchased and item because I thought I should have it - because everyone else had it. I didn't wear it and it would fall into a spare room closet - to stay and never be worn. Then a couple of times a year I would purge and sent things to Goodwill. I have learned over the years what styles fit me and I feel good in. It saves a lot of money in the long run. Just a wonderful informative video. I always enjoy seeing you. Deb :-)

  • @schreiberinjen

Hi Audrey, thank you for making this video. Like the others, I wish I would have known or heard this when I was younger. Could've saved me time and money. The part that did me in when I was younger were all the advice (from my mom or information online) about what constitutes a basic wardrobe. I thought I had to have or wear those things to be proper. But I never was comfortable nor did I think it was flattering for me to wear a button-down shirt. And yet I gravitate toward them and buy them because I think I can pull it off. Anyway, that was my main takeaway from this. I just have to be honest about what I like on myself and what's comfortable. Those are the ones I always end up wearing anyway.
P.S. I should also say that when I was younger, whatever style I had was very much influenced by the kind of look my mom liked. I think it still is to this day.

Fantastic video, Audrey! I'm still going through the process of sorting out my closet for each season, and your "white shirt principle" is sooooo perfect! I've been trying to establish a set of wardrobe essentials, and trying to figure out what still felt a bit "wrong". You've hit the nail on the head - for example, buttondowns with stiff, pointed collars and figure hugging darts are just not me! I will now focus more on the style of blouses/tops that suit me more - and now I realize that might be a flowy white silk blouse, not a cotton oxford. And of course, I will extrapolate the principle to other items in my essentials list (as you said for the black skirt, etc.). Your videos are so intelligent and thoughtful - you really add value to this whole genre of youtube! Thanks, and can't wait to see your next video!

Thanks, Audrey. After watching this video, I realize I have much of the basic wardrobe. It's just mixed with a lot of things I either don't like or don't wear (because my husband liked and insisted would be great, but I didn't ... but bought anyway)! I prefer a cream (not white) long sleeved shirt. So, I have several "good" T-shirts, jackets, & skirts. I'm beginning to see where some gaps are that I can fill as needed. I've got to sort through my closet & pass many things on to someone else. My thanks! 😊

Mm. What you said about shirts is interesting, I have a white ¾ sleeve one which I don't wear because it needs Ironing and the collar is so high I have to walk with my head held high or rub make up all over the collar... Yet here I am, putting another one on my wishlist...
However, it's hopefully a nice, wise decision, I've based the style on a navy shirt that I like wearing, thin collars that are around the base of my neck, and now that I've started adding jumpers to my wardrobe I'm excited to style them together!.. also getting a steamer... Maybe I'll like steaming haha.

Ah, the white shirt debate. I have 3 that I wear a lot. The one with black buttons with good jeans or black dress pants and a rich, deep red classic blazer (or the pale blue wool box jacket, or...), the linen one with navy skirt/pants and a scarf (cobalt blue, rich pink, etc) and a classic cotton with really cool bronze-ish buttons I put on myself, it goes with everything including jeans, cowgirl boots and a wide hat. But I am a box/rectangle shape so nothing rides tight in the wrong places. Classics work for me. Thank you, Audrey, for your elegance and generosity of advice.

I need colour near my face, but nothing too harsh. So my basic colours are dark blue or navy and warmer darker greys in winter, some black also. And all my t-shirts and blouses have colour. Still I like your style, it suits y. Amd we share a love for jackets.

This is so on time! I am on the hunt for some essentials. I just recently realized I find button down shirts uncomfortable. Especially since I have a large bust lol. I did find a really nice wh flowey white top that works great! I can tuck it in or leave it out. Could you do a video on how to style midi skirts for fall. I love a good pleated midi!

Excellent video especially how you said about copying someone! RUclips is full of this these days and not someone who encourages wardrobe essentials like you do! I use to be the type to experiment a lot as a teenager with clothing! I love wearing white (new colour that has appeared out of nowhere in the past year or so)

Love your advice. Trying to edit my wardrobe. Tend to buy trendy clothes and then disappointed. Going to make a foundation list and get rid of stuff. Love accessories, so will use them to add flair. Thank you for this video.

I like button down shirts with band or mandarin collars. Regular collars are ok but I find them less comfortable.

Angela Andersen me too, I find them quite masculine as well especially in stiff cotton, and my wide shoulders, short hair and boyish frame just means I look a bit too masculine than I want, I identified mandarin collar shirts as my staples a few days ago, as well, they're the only shirts I feel comfortable wearing alone at work in, professional without looking like one of the boys.

Yes, not a white shirt person. Cannot tell you how hard I've tried to find a white shirt that i can love. There is always something wrong. Too stiff. Too tight sleeves. Too sheer. Too thick. Too fitted. Too loose. Too long/short. There must be one out there for me, but I've yet to find it.

You don't really need a white shirt if that's not comfortable for you. Just substitute a white turtleneck or jersey material.

Piddeaux funny, I just bought a white t-shirt yesterday because I decided my current one has a terrible neckline that doesn't suit me nor make me n feel comfortable... I'm also returning the new one because arm looks weird because of my wide shoulder, going back to the store to try a bigger size, then another style and if all else fails, the men's section.

I love this video! It is so helpful for figuring out my capsule wardrobe! Here’s my thing with ANY collared shirt. My hair needs to be chin length or shorter. If it’s longer than that, the. It sneaks into the back collar of the collared shirt! As great as I look in a collared shirt, I have to be careful. I’m actually hoping to find a white button down collar to where when my hair is shorter or pulled up, but I’m still debating if I need to include that in my capsule, since it will have very limited wearability.

I always felt weird for hating classic white button downs. I have only one and never wear it, I look so stiff and conservative (in a bad way). But I love it on other people, though.I prefer white tie-neck blouses, they are softer and more feminin, in my opinion. And pretty much serve the same purpose.
