For the past eight years, Alice in Chains vocalist/guitarist Jerry Cantrell and bassist Mike Inez have hosted the "Alice In Chains & Friends Fantasy Football League & Auction", donating a spectacular collection of signed musical instruments, memorabilia and experiences for an online auction to benefit organizations like Music For Relief and MusiCares. In recent years, they've donated proceeds from the auction to provide protective gear and training for workers assisting with the Ebola Prevention Initiative and contributed funds to MusiCares's health and human services programs.
Each year's charity initiatives are determined by the League's reigning champion. This year's champion is Jerry Cantrell and he's announced that proceeds from this year's auction will be split between a donation to MusiCares in Chris Cornell's name and a donation to Music For Relief in Chester Bennington's name. The auction will run from August 14 through August 24.
League participants include Cantrell, Inez, GUNS N' ROSES' Duff McKagan, TV sports host Rich Eisen, actor Michael Rapaport, PANTERA's Vinnie Paul Abbott, ANTHRAX's Scott Ian, NFL.com's fantasy football columnist Michael Fabiano, former NFL running back Maurice Jones-Drew and GASLIGHT ANTHEM's Benny Horowitz. The 2017 season draft will broadcast live on September 5 on SiriusXM's "Fantasy Sports Radio", hosted by John Hansen and Bob Harris.
Among the items up for auction is a guitar lesson with Jerry Cantrell, a bass guitar signed by the members of GUNS N' ROSES, a guitar signed by DEFTONES, a pinstripe Viking guitar signed by Zakk Wylde, a football signed by members of the NFL Hall Of Fame, a football signed by 2017 Hall of Fame inductee Kurt Warner and more.

Okay seriously people stop body shaming its not cool. So what if Jerry gained weight or got older. That is not what this video is about. This is about Chris and Chester and suicide and its very sad. People should focus on their music and level of talent instead. Jerry and Mike are pretty cool guys for doing this.
People either get older or die. Or get plastic surgery and die.
Angel Of darkness it's ok, wait till this shitty commenting fuckers get old (if they live that long). They'll regret their words in Solitude.
@Sean Gordon it's rare to see a profound comment on RUclips, Bravo to you
fucking idiots !!! who does that ??
thank you. I think he is just as beautiful as always, anyhow
How can you not love Cantrell... Such smart and emotionally intelligent bloke.
He's irreplaceable
He's wise beyond his years that's for sure
My most favorite Piscean..above Kurt.
Dude, have a watch of the interview with him in his house talking about Alice In Chains. I think it's Rolling Stone. It's first class. He appears to be genuine as fuck 💚💚💚
I love that man!!
Jerry is such a good guy. Truly. He stood by Layne and never once judged him even at the cost of lots of money he could have made touring and whatnot. Jerry was in the Deadwood movie and that was so very awesome (he and W. Earl Brown are good friends).
The deadwood cameo was great, really quick tho. My favorite Jerry cameo tho is without a doubt the copymat Jesus from Jerry maguire, shit is so good.
Jerry/AIC, Pearl Jam and Kim Thaill & Ben Shepard should write/record an album together...I would love to hear Ed and Jerry harmonize on some songs
Fuckin A. That's the best idea I've heard in awhile.
Man you hit the nail on the head with that idea.
Ed vocals, Jerry and Kim guitars, Ben Bass, Sean Drums. Now thats a Grunge Supergroup!
Not to mention the sound of Cantrell and McCready playing together would be great
Yeah kim thayil should be making hit albums but he's underground right now
RIP Chris and Chester
Jerry and Mike are good guys, they know how hard it is when you lose someone you love to depression and addiction. Great to know they are done this for Chris and Chester,😊
It warms my heart to see their colleagues talking good things about Chris and Chester. May they truly rest in peace
R.I.P Cornell, greatest blues rock singer of modern times
Jerry is so real.I love that cat.
I have so much respect for Jerry Cantrell. He is a great singer
God bless you guys. And Rip cornell And Chester 💕💕💕💕💕will be missed 4 Ever!!!!!!
Very cool, and a great interview.
Thank you for this interview
That candor and the generosity is remarkable. Jerry and Mike: I have loved your music for a long, long time. Now I love it more. This interview inspired me to donate some of my rock star paintings to the Musicares, MusicforRelief cause, including a painting of Chris Cornell. I have been immersed in Soundgarden and Audio slave clips for weeks, as I have an exhibition currently on foot at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel dedicated to Chris Cornell and the work of MOSH, Minimisation Of Suicide Harm. My major piece "The Connection" has images of Chris Cornell from the official clip of Black Hole Sun, and from his final performance in Detroit on May 17. The work is to be formally unveiled this Friday at the MOSH headquarters. My RUclips channel doesn’t have the Chris Cornell painting up yet. I was waiting for World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September. But you can see other paintings on my channel, and footage of me painting them from RUclips film clips: ruclips.net/channel/UCBd7MyhyCmFg2PdzmchIVFg
As I was doing this EBay process, and failing to connect, I decided that EBay probably isn’t the place to post the Chris Cornell painting. I want to offer to give it to someone close to him, like a loved one or his band, if they like it. That's my second failure to connect. I don't have contact with those people. So I need to message one of you or someone you nominate about it. Because if the loved ones don't exercise their prerogative, it comes to you. I might bring it myself. The painting could also come with other donations. Your existing guitar collection could be joined by a guitar signed by Nancy Wilson from Heart, a ticket to the Rolling Stones No Filter Concert on 23 September, and about $10,000 I had set aside for making a connection with Judas Priest, necessary to fulfil my mission to use live art and rock'n'roll for compassionate causes. Rank Stupidity got in the way of me meeting the High Priests of Heavy Metal. I was all ready to show them how the guitar solo in Grinder sounds on sax. Maybe I still will, if someone helps me with the connectivity issue. You need to hear the story about that one. It's a doozy. They don't call me the Saxoffender for nothing. Which is strange, when all I ever set out to do was use the force for good.
So I shall send you an image of the Chris Cornell painting privately. My Instagram account (@sophiedowney6) is probably the best place for this to happen. Then again, with my luck, there’ll be 15 Jerry Cantrells and 15 Mike Inezes on Instagram and I’ll pick the wrong ones to forward the image to. Then I’ll have a hat trick of connection failures. Ah well. Bring on World Suicide Promotion Day For Saxoffenders. I think it's gonna rain, when I die.
Keep rockin Jerry! I know people are gonna say AiC isn't the same anymore and i agree, no one can ever replace Layne. But he's doing what Layne would have wanted, and he's one of the only musicians from 90s seattle grunge that's still rocking.
I never found Alice in Chains grunge. I always found them to be straight forward rock musicians.
Enough to make a grown man cry watching this
This guy is a legend! I saw AC and korn in NY AND they killed it . Sonically the best band you will ever hear : rip.. layne , Chris , Kurt
For about 9 months out of the year Seattle area is an absolutely brutal place to live. No sun. No wonder all these guys are so fucked up. I can’t wait to leave.
Jerry leading by example of what a human being should be like regardless of fame and success! 👏
great cause..Love these guys
Jerry went through it years ago with Andy Wood.
I love this guy.
Solid as a rock
Kept an amazing career and sustained a historical example regarding the pop culture - which is a bunch of trash, especially nowadays
Absolute cl
Jerry- "I'm an alcoholic".
It takes a huge amount of courage to admit that, and he did it, and has stayed sober.
so agree, finally quit drinking 4 yrs ago after decades of rock n roll debauchery. amazed I'm alive...
I quit drinking too, for the day. You don't realize you have a problem until the darkness really sets in.
@@arthurmurfitt7698 congrats to u brother ✌🤘
Alcohol is the worst drug going..Id rather be a drug addict than an alcoholic anyday..This comment probably doesnt make alot of sense to someone thats never done drugs..But for the ppl that have you know what i mean..Plus ive been clean for almost 10 years. Sobriety is the best gift you could ever givin yourself....My bf likes to have a few drinks once in awhile and i swear i cant stand him when he drinks..Drunks are sickening..
@@sandisandii2033 alcohol is just so accessible that people Can get it and abuse every single day, having a loved one who’s a serious alcoholic is a brutal thing to be around same with being a drug addict obviously but alcohol is so normalized that it’s different.
Cantrell is the man. Massive respect for him.
agree
Cantrell really is a good dude.
jondubb35 what a big heart. Behind the grunge, a true humanitarian
i read some shit from some layne's personal friend in an old blog and they said cantrell was kinda mean lol.. but uea i think he has changed with time.
jondubb35 he really is
Erick Not true all. Xana La Fuente who was Andrew Wood's girlfriend (also close friends of AIC) have said that That Jerry and Layne were close. She said that "If there was anyone that watched out for Layne the most it was Jerry believe it or not." If Jerry was ever hard on Layne it was because he wanted Layne to get help.
link?
Mad respect to Jerry Cantrell and the Alice in Chains boys!
Damn....Jerry has been through the death of his mother, Layne Staley, Mike Starr, Andrew Wood, Kurt Cobain, Mia Zapata, Kristin Pfaff, and now Chris Cornell. They've come to snuff the Rooster....but he ain't gonna die!!!!
And Dimebag Darrell.
I was a guy who thought I'd 'die young' for many reasons, but to see so many talented men actually die, and to still be alive, makes me sad - what a fool I was to undervalue my life. The inspiration that Layne, Chris, Kurt, and so many others have given is some comfort, but I really feel for Jerry,
Also Scott Weiland
Caoimhin JPNLevel 3. Scott never gets any play, ,Scott was awesome
Erlinda Ford ...Scott was talented as fk ....period
Jerry is the most underrated musician of all time. He is amazing
Amen
More like under the radar, large majority of Fans of AIC and Cantrell know he’s one of the best songwriters ever, there is just a lot of people who don’t know him which is a shame, almost everyone rates Jerry extremely high obviously because the man is a god. Either way I wish more people knew about Jerry and appreciated his work and career.
I wouldn’t say that. Jerry is a Rock Legend. He is definitely not under rated in the music industry. He is friends with some of the biggest names in the biz. EVH, Elton John, Chris Cornell, Eddy Vedder, Dime and Vinnie Paul, etc
He has also toured with major bands for years. AIC has tens of millions of fans across the globe.
Eddie Van Halen loved Jerry and sent him a garage full of equipment !
Underrated???? Not where I fucking live lol
Jerry is a great musician. But a better human being. Thanks mates.
He reminds me of David Gilmour so much. Great guitarist, soothing voice and handles himself very well
Not only that. He's also an amazing songwriter. His solo album Brighten confirms it
Brighten is probably his best solo work
Jerry is a genius
"Remember them in a good light" Well said Jerry
agree much ♥
Years later it's the only way we know how lol
Its hard to think Cantrel is literally one of the last surviving grunge singers around.
Stayleys gone
Cobains gone
Cornells gone
Benningtons gone
Weilands gone
An era that cannot be touched honestly. The rawness and realness of it wasnt just an act and thats what will always make it so special.
Eddie Vedder's still alive.
It’s really fucking sad, but not to nitpick but there’s still so many living grunge singers but nobody seems to care about them. Tad almost killed himself but grunge “fans” never cared, Mark arm almost died of a heroin addiction in the 90’s but nobody cared, Mark lanegan almost died multiple times but by some miracle is still around. People need to stop romanticising the dead and be thankful that we still have so many people left who deserve to be cared about
Only him, Eddie Vedder and Billy Corgan are the last remaining Kings of grunge left ( i might seem to miss some others )
@@duncan3998 mark lanegan
Wood and Hoon are gone too. R.I.P to all of them.
Mike's advice is so good. Please go to bed just one more night. I respect the hell out of these guys. Rich, very cool of you. Thank you all.
Never liked Rich Eisen until I saw this. Empathic and real effort. He LISTENED.
Damn straight. Tomorrow is another Chance
@@UAPbigfootandBOATDRINKS rich eisen is actually a cool dude, there is a reason Jerry does this stuff with him and plays in the fantasy league with him and others. Eisen is a solid dude forsure
You think these people didn't spend their lives just going to bed one more night? It isn't that simple.
@@Salomon_G it's a start, it's not gonna be easy but that's not an excuse to accept an unwanted fate. You have to fight until you win and you will, anyone can win.
Jerry has watched all his friends die..I totally dig why he's an alcoholic. He still walks among us. I started to cry when he said he was an alcoholic..I'm one too.
Jerry Cantrell is my hero. How anyone could have survived in that scene is incredible.
Jerry is just awesome man.
AIC is a band that talked to my soul. R.I.P. Layne
Thanks for the real talk guys, everyone's scared to talk about depression. GO TO BED, think on it one more night, is the best advice you can give.
A lot of people with depression have insomnia which adds to the problem. It's not that easy to just "go to bed" and think about it.
The pond is vast man. This advice will still help a lot of people. A genuine response
ultra Adrestia absolutely totally agree
Usually, when one is laying on the bed trying to sleep, is when the darkest thoughts come to mind
José Cruz that's the very thing that haunts me today.
The songs Jerry & Layne and the band wrote got me through a lot of shit at the end of the 90's / early millennium and for that I am eternally grateful .
Randy Marsh now that’s tegrity
Bruh I'm 22 and went through some shit 2 years back and the music they made is still relevant
@@darbybohning6499 their music will always be relevant because there will always be people struggling with the same things they did like addiction/depression etc.
Man, you can see how much Jerry really misses Layne
DAN on MV they werent really close on layne's last years
but they were really close before...
Erick they were close. But we don't know the full story. Jerry's never going to talk about Layne's last years in detail. but I have a feeling Layne distanced himself to everyone that cared about him.
Layne was a wreck in his last years. Unfortunately you sometimes have to distance yourselves from those people if they don’t want to be helped.
Erick we don’t know exactly what their relationship was in the last years. Jerry is too respectful and has never divulged details about Laynes last years. He was struggling himself with addiction. Regardless when the last time they spoke before Laynes death, it doesn’t diminish the friendship and love they had for years. Even in the Unplugged concert you can see Jerry was patient and very supportive of his friend. Everyone wanst info on Layne, but the AIC guys aren’t going to give more than what’s out there already and to me, that’s a true sign of how much they loved Layne.
I deal with suicidal ideation and have since I was a pretty young child. Much more so now that all of my family have passed. Anytime I have a bad night, I always tell myself, "just one more day." I'm not sure how long I'll be able to keep doing that, but it's kept me alive this long.
The more I know about Mr Cantrell the more respect I gain. He has become a real inspiration as of late for me - I picked up the guitar once again because of him.
Go see him if his tour comes close. I made a pact years ago to never miss him live, regardless of who he's playing with. Every time I see him I appreciate him more....every, single time 💖
@@noneyabusiness1302 I agree mate I saw him in Tacoma and it was such a great show. Extremely emotional performance they played alot of Alice in Chains songs and it felt like a tribute to Layne and so many people were crying. It was incredibly moving.
Mike Inez strikes me as the man the band needed for stability.
Nothing says stability like a flannel and work boots. Love it.
Grounded. Just like the bass he plays. 💖
100% Mike Inez has stood by Jerry's side thru all these interviews. He is there for support, fellowship, brotherhood, bandmate . . . someone that Jerry can count on and lean on. Plus, he is 100% that dude...respectful, intelligent, empathetic and most importantly consistent. AIC has been blessed to have his presence during these dark times.
ok OLD school fan here. I have nothing but bromance love for Jerry. He's definitely on my "if you could have dinner with any 5 dead/alive musicians" table.
Jerry Cantrell is my all time favorite guitar player... i'm not saying hes the G.O.A.T , i'm saying hes my #1 !!!!
He's my favorite as well. I have been playing for 26 years now.
Great guitarist but that’s not even his best quality, his best quality is his songwriting, one of the best songwriters to ever exist. Amazing performer too and his lyrics are close to unmatched. Man is the GOAT in my Book even if he’s not the most technically skilled guy out there
He’s #1 for me
@George Thomas I totally feel the same way. I was at a local show in Seattle one night and had seen him standing in the adjoining bar. Later during the show I had been looking away for a while and suddenly the guitar got heavy, louder, and super exciting. I looked up and see Jerry playing with the band. It was amazing!! The show totally changed for the better.
Feel the same brother!!! Amen🙌🙏
Thanks AIC...killer what you all are doing for Chester and Chris....from the band who was graced by the god of vocals, Layne!
How strong and stoic of Jerry and Mike to be able to sit there and honesty express themselves and their pain.
I've stayed away from listening to other musicians talk about this. Jerry though - he's legit, and was always gonna listen to him.
Jerry is a really cool, stand up dude. Very talented too. I have nothing but respect for him.
In the last 48 hours I’ve become the biggest fan of Jerry Cantrell and finding more and more videos like this is only cementing my insane respect for this man
what happened in those 48 hours?
Jerry is just simply a good ole' boy as we would say in the South. He is the guy that you want there when things go wrong because he is stable and had a good head on his shoulders. But he is also the guy you want there when things go right because you want him to have that happiness in his life after all of the tragedy he has seen. And his dad is just a BAMF and you see that in Jerry.
Cantrell is one of the best to ever do it, one of the best songwriters to ever live and he’s a great dude who is incredibly highly respected by his peers, idk how anyone could not like Cantrell he’s the exact type of dude you want as a friend. Anyway this Jerry video always makes me sad but at the same time is great ruclips.net/video/DOlfR-tHADk/видео.html, you can really see how much he loved and respected Layne.
I have so much respect and admiration for Artists like Jerry and Mike spreading their positivity and understanding while personally grieving. What you two and others are doing, does make a difference. Thank you & hugs~
Fucking hell Jerry had short grey hair only last week, he doesn't fuck about.

You know he ain't gonna dye
No-oh, no-oh...

I'm glad that Jerry grew his hair out again. The short hair didn't work for him. That long blonde hair is one of his trademarks
Celtichammer he changes it up still
that’s honestly the one thing that u took out of this video
Honestly, What the fuck mate.
useless comment.
Bruh he just made a comment about his hair can y'all chill?
Chris Cornell and Susan Silver put Jerry up in their house when he was coming up. They go way, way back.

One of the greatest songwriters to ever live.
Jerry is like one of the most down to earth cool dudes. Very good man and excellent musician.
Man I just want to run into Jerry and hug the shit out of him
Both very well spoken men. What's up with people saying Jerry is "fat"?? If that's what "fat" looks like then I would love to be fat!! Jerry is just such a dreamy guy. 😍😍
Jerry one of the nicest and hottest guys in rock n roll x I'm an alcoholic. Thanks jerry for highlighting that x
Layne Staley is the reason I never touched crack or heroine. His death made me disgusted by that whole scene.

It just breaks my heart every time we lose a musician. Their music, lyrics, message, it all comes rushing back in sadness. I think of Layne, Scott, Brad, Chester, or Chris, I can't imagine how they must've suffered, alone. It hurts to think I will never hear any new music or see this person perform ever again.
I often thank God that we still have Jerry Cantrell in the world.
One of the best to ever do it and such a strong person, a damn good person too. Jerry has probably had the biggest impact on me of any musician ever, would be so awful if Jerry was also gone like many of his friends.
I needed to see this, I'm in a very dark place at the moment, and this gave me some kind of light. I don't want to say I'm full-blown suicidal, but I'd be lying if I said it doesn't cross my mind lately. Thank you Jerry, for everything you've done in your career, I couldn't imagine my life as I know it now without you.
how you doin today man! hope you are well.
Right there with you..
I hope things got better for you.
God bless Mike and Jerry. It's very cool to do this.
jerry cantrell man what a great dude and amazing guitarist
Jerry is an amazing human
It must have been tough for Jerry to see Layne end up losing his battle with drugs. He went to rehab 13 times. That’s a lot and it still didn’t work. It’s like he committed slow suicide over 10 years. In the end, he didn’t even leave his apartment. What could Jerry do? I’m sure he tried but it was futile!
Anyone who's lucky enough to have Jerry Cantrell for a friend is a better person for it.
Jerry Cantrell is an amazing person, not cool to disrespect him at all!!!!!
I cant imagine disrespecting a Man like Jerry. Wish there were more of him
AIC are the Best and Jerry is a friggin Legend.... Peace
next to heroin, alcohol is the worst imo. people think because it's legal it's not as bad, but it's worse.
If you manage to servive past 30 you get to gain weight and get older- thinking it won't happen to you is ridiculous
those unplugged AIC performances have earned Epic status in my mind forever for these guys
It’s usually the brightest stars that burn out the quickest. To this day I still haven’t heard Man in the Box sound “right” since Layne passed. There was a power and timbre at the chorus that no one comes really close to. A testament to the talent and ability he had. Definitely a voice that will be remembered…
The man is a walking Angel. What a great heart!
suicide is a series of moments and, like all moments in time it will pass. Getting through those bad moments is the hard part. It's like trying to pull an airplane out of a tailspin! Then, again, there's so much hate in today's world....sometimes a person just can't fight it anymore. If you wanna look at love like motor oil, a car can run with very little oil for awhile, especially if it's just doing little errands around town.....but if it has to take a LONG trip, suddenly things start wearing down, gaskets blow, metal parts start grinding, the engine (heart) falls apart. 😆🛫🛬🛣⚰🚀
If I become half the man Jerry Cantrell has become I'll be content. Such a great guy with a big heart. This is a real rocker that you find everyday clubs. He lives and breathes music and knows how important these two men's lifes were to so many. Bravo guys Bravo 👏
Jerry illustrates here that continual throat-clearing is good way to keep from blubbering when you talk about a difficult topic.
Great advice: "Go to bed."
Realy love this healthy guys -"just go to bed" -""Everyone have dark thoughts". That is as simple as it can get.
(I'm not talking lightly, really, dark thoughts? go bed, get laid or take a vacation)
Unfortunately all three of those things can be very difficult when your fucked in the head. However they are still good things to mention. I'd add that eating healthy foods and exercising is also good for the battle
"Lay down, i'll remember you "
I’m so glad that Jerry’s buddy was able to pull him out of his sad spiral by bringing up their children! Smart move.
Body shaming bastards!!!!! Fuck your haters! Jerry is amazing! Period. Nothing you can say can change that. The loss of chris and Chester are devastating to the rock community. Jerry and all those that support this initiative are awesome. Hands down. I salute you. Jerry, ever want to grab a coffee, I'm all down. Love to pick the brain. 👍👍👍👍
Not only can you get through substance abuse to sobriety, but you can thrive and love life again!! I have, and I was bad. The most important ingredient to helping someone: Love. And support. It's disheartening to see STP's Scott Weiland left out of all these conversations.
he wasn't really a part of that scene. Wasn't from Seattle didn't know those guys
He is not forgotten. He will never be. How could he ?
Mooky Blaylock I disagree, even if he wasn’t part of the scene exactly, Core and Purple were huge albums in the 90s and Scott was good friends with a lot of the grunge titans. I’d say he’s up there with them easily.
I think the circumstance with him is similar to Layne, but has no real place in the conversation pertaining to the circumstances surrounding Chester and Chris demises.
@The Cheap Microphone agreed. Scott, Layne, and Cornell are my big 3 from the era. Core was a stellar fucking album and runs thick in my blood.
Much love for Jerry and Mike, to the whole Alice in Chains Family
I'm so sorry about Chris and Chester. I just recently got portraits of Chris and Layne Staley on my leg. Great musicians both. Love you Jerry!!!!!!!💋💋💋💋
Genile Bankai Elric would love to see the portraits. What pic of Chris did you get? I'm still heartbroken over Chris, brutal.
bellarose6501 I almost crashed my car when I heard it on the radio the day after it happened. I found the pic I used in Pinterest. I wanted something that captured him singing and some of that insanely beautiful hair he had. It really turned out amazing. After it is all healed, I plan to go and put flowers on his marker at the cemetery in Hollywood.
Genile Bankai Elric I'm getting Kurt and Chris on my arm in November. I'd love to see what your pieces look like.
