You forgot the one of the funniest part of the epilogue. She shows him 3 separate book places, forgets he is there, and starts reading a book. He has to remind her of his presence and specifically ask her to show him something other than books.
He has to do so multiple times as well; she forgets him a few times. When she's reading, when she wants to enjoy a modern bathroom, and of course when she gets emotional with her mother. Also, they really downplay Ferdinand's misunderstandings, which are actually pretty funny too, like when he sees a woman wearing a short skirt in a library and immediately thinks she must be clinically insane and asks Myne why a mentally ill woman is allowed to wear such indecent things in public. Myne's confusion over Ferdinand's freakout over the skirt and people is worn out clothes is really funny.
@@SKai2609 I read the series. Then re-read it. Then read the WN Google translation. Then went on J Novel to read the chapters as they are translated. I've read two other LNs that are works in progress. Definitely got me hooked.
It might be worth noting that Myne CAN in fact draw pretty nicely. It's just that she made her drawing in cartoon or anime style (with oversized heads and eyes), which didn't go over well with the people of this world. Later when she draws the example picture for Wilma, it comes out nice enough for Wilma to be impressed and compliment her. So it's not a matter of skill, but of style. Also there's no p (or rather just one p) in the instrument's name. Just Harspiel, which incidentally makes it a little easier to pronounce. ^^ One change the anime made that I did like was moving Myne's plea to lighten Damuel's punishment from while she was still being cut out of the trombe to back at the temple when she requests new robes as compensation. It just feels more meaningful that she would defend Damuel back where it's save and after she had some time to work it through in her head, rather than right there and then in the moment. When she didn't mention Damuel again after the flight back in the books, it fellt a bit callous to me.
I have really been enjoying this series please keep it up if possible. I know you will not be able to discuss adaptation differences but your summary description is pleasant enough a format to enjoy by itself. One difference in adaptation I am surprised you did not mention was how different the anime and novel had the aftermath of the trombe go down. Karstedt’s reaction to being told the truth when freeing Myne built his character and helped Myne understand that Shikza’s opinion is not as widespread as she feared.
Achievement Unlocked - Made A Book! Although I did like how they gave Rosina a wooden board, so she could have *something* to remind her of the feel of a harspiel
While the worldbuilding sacrifices were unfortunate, I really liked how well the knight expedition was adapted with the extra episodes, since these scenes and especially that of Myne going so far overboard with magic (without her needing to stop) are central for the story going forward, deserving of focus and context. It's the first time Myne herself actually gets a glimpse of how powerful (and immensely valuable) she is in practical terms instead of her simply being able to fill magic cups better than everyone else or cause an old man to choke, and that paired with the guard debacle sets up how she can realistically gain great respect and power going forward. Plus it is immensely satisfying for the viewer/reader for her to finally be recognized and one-up that guy. The knight trial is what kickstarts everything that happens afterwards, really, so I can totally see why it was given so much attention over the poor ink guild's issues. On the other hand, the anime's memory sequence is pretty bad, especially since it misses the fact that the memories are perfectly vivid simulations and doesn't have her use that to apologize to her mom in actual conversation, which is important for her continual transition to new family making her realize how selfish she used to be and is a pretty tear-inducing moment. Going off the translated LNs without WN knowledge, this always struck me as a huge Chekhov's Gun for if Myne wants to discover something from earth that she doesn't know at all how to make or can't recall the details of well (e.g. the contents of a book, since she admits she was terrible at memorizing them), and Ferdinand even mentions the possibility of going back to them sometime too, so it will feel weird if it never comes up again in the series given what Ferdinand and the two others he tells know of how advanced her old civilization was. Or perhaps it even has something to do with the nature of the world she's in or was in, given how there is magic that can allow discovery of and in other worlds. But no, instead all we get is that it is merely replaying pictures complete with Urano staring at a book instead of at her mother. Also no Ferdinand teasing. We also don't get Ferdinand's musings over how she could easily start a war for being an unclaimed commoner maiden of such immense mana that she outclasses all others in a middle duchy (he doesn't count himself in such musings, but he only gets to her level by a complete disregard for his health anyway, while she is...sick in more ways than one as readers know), which I thought was a pretty good indicator to the reader of how much of a political timebomb she is on top of being a walking socio-economic nuke. The anime just says that action is needed because of her memories with a brief mention of mana, but doesn't give the greater context.
Watching the anime got me into reading light novels. I now read the new chapter on J-Novel Club each Monday. Going through these videos is a great way to experience the story again in a new way! Thank you. Also, I love the Olive Garden background at 13:26! I'm going to think of Benno's Italian restaurant as an Olive Garden now.
Myne finally making her first book is one of the most important moments in the series, making a book after 2ish years of struggling, and it was glossed over in the anime and I will never not be angry about it Making Rosina fill Myne in on Wilma's situation doesn't make any sense for either of their characters also the loss of basically everything about the memory search epilogue worries me tremendously. She never apologized to her mom so she never got that sense of resolution. She demands a hug from Ferdinand instead of being the one to give him a hug while he doesn't have the energy to tell her not to bother. I feel that'll cause some issues its such a great volume for the series. Miya Kazuki just loading more weapons into Chekov's armory. New characters, deeper bonds. Myne smirking at seeing Lutz and his brothers now being closer after his family troubles resolved is so cute
I really appreciate those videos from you. Ascendance of a Bookworm is my favorite light novel and you're doing it justice in those recaps of sort. I'm looking forward to your future videos.
That was an excellent and insightful video. I love the series and i think the story you covered here and the next 2 really set the tone for the entire rest of the book
This is by far my favorite book. We get a look at the scary of noble society and a soft side of Ferdi. Oh, now that part 3 anime is announced for 2026. Are you going to cover that?
Watching the high priest and the knight commander's gazes drop when Mynes like I need new clothes was legit comical. One of Ferdinand's few slow moments 😂
Yeeeep still absolutely love the editing, thanks for keeping this series going also that 4th wall break and dig at Disney was hilarious. Although most of the Disney story's around the 90-2000s were actually existing fairy tails retold/adapter to animation including Ciderella . ;)
Season 02 of the anime was weak in comparison to S1, simply based on the stuff left on the "cutting room floor". My biggest overall gripe though was the "mind meld" portion in the last episode. Considering how the season was leading to that moment, it went surprisingly quick. I would've preferred that they lengthened that part to make it more like the LN & had the meeting of Ferdinand & Karstedt left to the start of Season 03.
Myne trying to get her Cinderella story approved was the most frustrating part of the series for me so far. There are so many versions of that story going all the way back to ancient Greece. Surely one of them would have been acceptable as a story. Most versions just have the shoe losing element in common. Most have no fairy godmother and Cinderella is often a noble/princess. I thought Myne would be well read enough to know this, but for some reason the disney version is the one used. I literally had to put the book down in that section because I was so mad that other fairy tales or even versions of this fairy tale were not considered. And then she basically gives up on children's fiction and doesn't mention it ever again up through the current translated novels. I hope it comes back but so infuriating.
Yeah the anime/manga is barely the barebone of the story. The translated novels are so much more. Even more detailed and explanatory than the web novels. However, it will probably take 3+ more years to translate and publish the rest of the story. The current translation is at Act4-volume6 while the anime-season3 is just closing Act2 and the whole serie ends at Act5-volume??. The web novels do not have volumes like the translated ones but it can be seen roughly like Act2 is 2x as long as Act1, Act3 is 3x as long as Act1, Act4 is 4x as long as Act1 and Act5 is 5x as long as Act1. As for the anime, it would be hard to get season 4 unless there is a very high demand for it. And for anime to cover the entire story, it would roughly require 15 seasons.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think the japanese LN isn't finished yet either. But as far as I can tell, there are currently 7 volumes of part 5 out, in addition to the part 4 which has 9 volumes. To give some more context to those not reading the LNs, part 1 (= season 1) has 3 volumes, part 2 has 4 (2 of which are season 2 of the anime) and part 3 consists of 5 volumes. So part 4 alone has as many books as parts 2 and 3 combined.
That vision thing comes up again in part 5. Late part 5. The long threads of this story are just so impressive Also, Wilma came of age after Christine left. That means that that blue robe tried to force an underage girl. Since he's a noble it's not technically illegal since nobles can't commit crimes against commoners, but it's very frowned upon. Nobody looks upon that kindly and they will be ostracized if they're ever found out. Your manliness is called into question. Sylvester was disgusted at the idea, saying he's more than capable of finding willing noble women. Like, what you have so little merit you not only can't convince a noble woman to be with you, now you can't even find an adult commoner? It makes you look pathetic.
This makes me wonder if that’s why the former orphanage director offed herself after what she did to the orphans (like Fran) was found out. Not that she’s doing it to grey priests/orphan commoners but because they’re underage?
As someone who’s up to date with the novels, I had forgotten how noble raised their rank & always thought that the only way was with marriage. The fact that the family can by producing 3 hairs of higher quality had evade me.

The only scene that really bugged me was the visit to memory lane not only chopped down but completely butchered. Not only was most of Ferdinand's reactions chopped out but even the entire feel of the scene was redone.
