So interesting how a 3 season show in the mid 60s can still have an impact so many years later. I still like it!!

Patti Brooks I was there at the same age and totally share your sentiment! It was so fun to watch their adventures but not be too scared...just a bit sometimes but thankfully without today’s special effects. It was perfect for that time, Irwin Allen had so many good shows, Gilligan’s Island being my other favorite.

10:00 That was the genius of the whole show: Lost in Space was both unique, and a product of it's time. Remember: It was also the time of the original Batman Series! Outrageous kitsch, and farcical humor, is what made these shows so entertaining: With the end of this great era in Television, America has lost so much . . .lost so much. And we must never forget: Johnathan Harris is the one who, through his ad-lib technique, ushered in the whole "CAMP" concept for the show! All were great actors, but Johnathan Harris was pure, natural, acting genius. He made the show what it was, and thus kept it fresh and entertaining.

Willoughby was suppose to be an actual llama (painted purple and voiced by an actor like in Francis the Talking Mule movies or Mr. Ed the Talking Horse TV series) in the "Great Vegetable Rebellion."
I don't know if it was true (or not) that this character was suppose to become a regular Jupiter 2 crew member (there was that offer by Professor Robinson to take Willoughby along with them but he declined so he could stay behind and take care of Tybo).
But the concept was ditched when behavioral problems with the llama arose and it was replaced with actor James Millhollin for the episode (hence him refusing to go with the Robinsons). Credits at the end have this character listed as Willoughby the llama.

I'm convinced that "The Great Vegetable Rebellion" was inspired by Fireball XL5's "The Plant Man from Space". It was supposed to be a serious marionette drama but a little "out there"... I think the Lost in Space version was supposed to be a parody!

You've missed a good one, then. Best ep of Season III. An aura of dread is cast from the opening moments, as Will reads from an old book about the Shadow World. The set is a minimalist, Dali-esque nightmare of black and white; there is additional characterization for some of our old favorites, and a bitchin' fight at the end.

    Thoughts on the show:
Often made me think of Gilligan's Island in space with Dr. Smith taking Gilligan's role.
SUSPECTED that there was a person inside the robot....but not at all sure.
Having watched the show as a child and then an adult it was a shame that the adults were forced to yield the spotlight, as it were, to Will and Dr. Smith...assisted by the robot.
Penny or Judy? It's also like Gilligan's Island: Ginger or Mary Ann?
Jonathan Harris, a wonderful actor, appeared in several Twilight Zone episodes before this show came along.
A big fan of Bill Mumy (also in several episodes of Twilight Zone), did a good job of straddling the line between child genius and a knows everything kid.
Finally, my favorite episode is when Will goes back to Earth and no one believes it is him. Admittedly an almost sci-fi cliche, but still captivating.

Lost in Space was a really great space adventure show. In the beginning it was great. At the end of the series , I do have to say the shows got silly and not really believable . An example of this was the show, " The Vegtable Rebellion. It was really silly.

Once the focus was on dr. Smith , the show became silly. Your right, the first early shows were good adventures with the whole family but veered off and changed directions. I stopped watching it then . Harris's character killed this show! Just my take.

I saw a you tube channel that said it was the worst hour on TV. I really dont think they ever watched the show. This was one of the highest rated shows on television. Now Netflix has found a way to butcher it by rewriting the story and redesigning the Robinson family, the robot and Dr Smith. They even renamed the ship. (Which incidentally was not launched from earth). I watched it and besides the names of the characters recognized nothing. (Except Billy Mumy and Martha Kristen who appear in cameos) I guess the producers did this to try to legitimize the show. I fear what's next on their chopping block.....Voyage to the Botton of the Sea? I Dream of Genie? Hogan's Heros? Or what about The Andy Griffith Show? When will the madness end?😬

@@tonycrossley2869 I read in Jonthan Harris's bio where he was worth $ 2.5 million. However, Billy Mumy's worth is $10 million. They were pretty close in Lost in Space, so maybe it was his tribute to Harris.

Lost in Space is a gem of a show. Even with the corny Scripps and fake backgrounds and weak special effects it's still a classic. Jonathan Harris will never be matched and his role is dr. Smith. He made that show. And to think they were going to kill him off after a few episodes. Marta Kristen was a super babe. Still is today. Angela Cartwright was cute too. One of the greatest acting ensembles in classic TV history. Fact that the show went from dramatic and serious two fun-loving and campy didn't seem to matter to anyone. It was still a cult hit. My two favorite episodes where trip through the robot and the antimatter man.
