  • It Looks Complicated - It's Super Simple! The Three Panel Patch Block
This is a block to impress people with. It looks spectacularly complicated, but it's all done with three simple strips. I am using Liberty again - Tana Lawn this time.
I've used Wiltshire, Donna Leigh D Green and Betsy D Green in this panel.
    I used 1 1/2" strips.
If you have never tried traditional pieced patchwork before, this is a fabulous starting point. I hope that I can help you avoid some of the pitfalls too.
You can use almost any fabric when creating patchwork, but if this is your first go, I recommend quilting cotton. You are looking for something that feels similar to a man's shirt. It doesn't fray too badly, holds its shape well and is easy to sew by hand.
Patchwork is ideal for re-using fabrics that have meaning, or garments that cannot be passed on because of damage or stains. It's a true women's craft - practiced all around the world in countless ways. It will be lots of fun to travel the world in patchwork and see what we might find.

Hi Rebecca. I can see how hand stitching such thin strips would help to keep them true as I find machining small pieces can distort the fabric. I don't know I would have the patience but it does look very neat and even with your hand stitching. Thank you for encouraging us to try this. xx

I think it's important to sew in whatever way works for you. I just love hand sewing, but if you prefer to work on a machine, that's great too. Just create! I am discovering that these traditional patchwork blocks are way easier than I thought. It's fun to learn and just have a go. ☺️

How beautiful! And so relaxing to sew. I’m over fast quilting! Thank you Rebecca. ❤❤❤

There's something about going slowly that really changes my mindset. It's good for the soul, I think. Thanks for watching ☺️

In the USA we call that block rail fence. It always make me think of picket fences and train tracks.

I love the way different traditions developed their own vocabulary around quilting. The different names tell stories of their own. It's beautiful. Thank you. 🤗

May I ask what sizes of thread and needle you are using? Do you have a preference of thread content? Thank you for sharing your tip of starting at center seam when joining blocks!

It's a gutterman sew all polyester thread - not sure of the size, it's a machine thread. The needle is about a size 6 or 7 sharps needle. I use whatever is to hand that I can thread. I'm really not fussy! Hand sewing let's you play all sorts of tricks to get your blocks to align. It's so wonderful! Thanks for watching.

Hi. Good question. I love hand sewing. I can do it anywhere, the rhythm is really therapeutic, I feel more connected with the process, it's slower and more mindful for me. Also, I have arthritis and using my hands for detail work keeps them mobile. There may come a time when I can't hand sew, so I do it all I can in the meantime. 🧵🪡

You take way to much time marking ,get a 1/4” foot.
