These sort of repairs are my day to day - I've gone good at doing them through endless repetition. I no longer give them any thought. Pal came in today - I had the back axle off a big sprinter van where the mounts had all corroded away - I was rebuilding the mounts in order to re-fit the axle. No other place would even touch it. Sprinter will go out with that back axle solid as a rock. He was amazed that it was even possible - to me it was just another day at work. I see the same vibe here - just another job, no biggie - that only comes from long experience. People see it & think it is amazing - Chads going "Well this is a doddle... todays a Holiday Day!"
Isn't it fun when your skills flow after daily practice. It becomes like second nature. Congrats on achieving that with this type of work, if only so I don't have to.
Great explanation. Can't believe no one has sponsored you with some cordless tools. It's a game changer. So many new tools out. Hardly ever plug in a sander, grinder, saw any more. Pretty reasonable if you shop around, in US at least.
finally you went with 'store bought'. I mentioned that last truck rocker repair and got chastised for the even considering that. Actually addressed as negative comment on following video
Hi Chad, Jolene, Doug, and Fina, this was a very educational day on dealing with sill plates and rust. Some states in the US have inspections however, we do not here in Wisconsin and even the states that do I believe are just mechanical inspections. Nice job everybody as usual!
I did some rockers on an 02 Cavalier that no body shop would touch. I just followed what I thought made sense. Remarkably the steps were almost identical to how you did it. I was pretty proud of how it turned out.
I really appreciate Chad’s explanation that these repairs are not a restoration but just “good enough” to pass inspection.I would like to see the final product.
i just put home made rocker panels on my 57 chevy wagon and i painted the insides of everything before i welded them on. i also used a Lenco panel spot welder to weld them on. it makes it EZ but everything has to be clean for the welder to work.
Chad, nice to see you helping out and that you’re not “too good” to just help with a rust repair on a relatives truck. Kind of like having Picasso paint your bathroom.
Hats off to Chad for not only doing the work, but being a patient teacher and effortlessly changing gears and welcoming random visitors without huff, puff or attitude.
Chad, you're a very generous man. The explanations and tips are mind blowing. I love watching you work in real time with zero BS. I fervently observe every move Thanks for the great job you are doing and the inspiration you visit on our young people Most others try to impress them with how impossible it is and all the expensive and unobtainable tools they need to do what you do with a zip wheel and a mig welder.
Chad in my experience welding on a car I always disconnect the battery ground side. As welding on the car the ground current travels through the whole car, there is a chance it might travel through the alternator or even worse the cpu { computer }. Good luck as always. Bob from Fresno, calif
Yep we always disconnect the battery dont want to be blowing wiring, batteries or on board computers, if he got a bad earth and fried the computer he is up for a lot of money, not sure how much over there as people trash vehicles after a few years, here they are expensive, even jump starting or charging batteries is a risk, Doug should know that being a mechanic and all.

Hi chad, I enjoyed todays presentation quite a bit,,it’s something a lot of guys can use,I have done it here at hone myself,,hi to Jolene an Doug an Tim an fina too, luv you guys,,👍👍😀
Enjoy watching your builds, but on the late model stuff, never do rockers (you call them sills) without doing the cab corners. The price is negligible. And , although I like your idea of using be excess rocker to patch over the bottom of the cab corners. It's not enough. If you don't think so, mark this day on the calendar and in 2 years look for rust boils just above the repair. I'd go with cab corners and cut them down so the weld seam is about 8 inches above where the rust hole is, or just below the belt line. Great content. Thank you.
Chad, I’m thinking about repairing a small half dollar sized rust hole in my truck bed by cutting the rust out and welding in a new piece. I’ve never done it before. What kind of welder should I be using?
Gotta appreciate a good shop hand, someone who will keep things organized, and learn the tricks and eventually be able to know the next tool needed before it’s a thought! Good job tho, I call grinders Tasmanian devils haha

Awesome video but man, help these people out for the future , I mean if you are gonna take the time to cut the old metal out, what about spending another few minutes with a wire wheel and get the loose crap out, and then spray in some simple rust convertor, not undercoat, it chemically stops the rusting process, a lil prevention while ya are there fella.. even a qwikie can plan for the future just cause ya ar e there.
using dually wheel on single wheel front spindles currently on frame will completely change steering geometry. Your stock steering geometry is designed for single wheel that centers on spindle / axle and bearings. Dually wheel move wheel / tire centerline out like 8-10" beyond where it's designed to be putting load centerline of wheel / tire same 8-10" out from where it is with stock single wheel rim it has now. I have a drawing of front axle ball joints showing wheel stud backing plate and how it is off-set out so dually rim tire is centered same place on front spindle as single rim tire on steering axles. Problem is I can't attach it here in RUclips. :(
