    I haven't played magic in person in years, but I really enjoy your videos. Most of the technical stuff flys over my head, but you make me intersted in buying magic cards for the first since I last played in the mid-90's. So WotC should make you CEO.

    My top 5 list:
    5. Kid Haters
    These are the kinds of people who are like, "Oh, he's a kid? This should be easy." They think that every single kid out there sucks at the game, when, if you are smart, this is not true. Now many kids may seem inexperienced, and it's because they are. If they were an adult, they would be inexperienced too. Now, being a kid myself (obviously) I haven't noticed this too much. This is okay if it is minor, but I'm sure there are people who think kids suck no matter what.
    4. Try Hards
    These people never let you go back on anything, even in a casual event. Sure, if it is a tourny, I get it. But just sitting down. playing casual commander should not be the place to tryhard. The stupidest things, like drawing before untapping, and they get all ragey.
    3. RAGERS
    "WTF!!! I SHOULD HAVE WON THAT!!! *Flips table
    2. Convincers
    These are the people that try with all their might to distract you to the fullest. Playing Grixis Delver (A complicated deck) in the finals against Abzan? They talk about their dog. Trying to make a crucial decision? "You should do that!" Just playing and your opponent misses something that is reasonable to not tell them about? "You forgot to do that."
    1. Cheaters
    Do I have to explain this?

    On number 2, when you said "steal their decks", i kinda got a little teary eyed because last year i had constructed this brand new, homebrew zombie deck and it won a game here and there and then i heard of relentless dead (i was getting back into mtg) and i bought one and threw it in, eventually even bought a invocation card to make the deck flashy. And lo and behold, my deckbox got stolen while i was doing a fnm draft the next week and i didnt even get to play the deck w/ the new cards. I have nothing wrong against your video, just hit me hard to where i kept screaming in my head #1 has GOT TO BE deck thieves. Well now that i got that out of my system, just wanted to say 2 more things: 1, i really enjoyed your video, so keep up the great work; and 2, my fingers are now really cramped because i typed this on a flip-phone.

    I knew what #1 was going to be because that is my #2. My number 1 is thieves. I have some old MtG cards that a ripped from packs back in the day and are now worth money. I actually HATE that they are worth money because now I'm afraid to play them anywhere. As the value of MtG cards continues to endlessly go up, a more unsavory element has made itself known more and more. I've lost hundreds of dollars in cards from thieves. It's to the point I don't want people to look at my deck because I'm afraid people are going to switch out my cards. I started running purple sleeves so no one would mistake my cards for theirs and now everyone is running purple sleeves. It's getting to be a real problem.

    The Rage Guy, this is my favorite. I have been playing off and on for the last twenty years. Yeah I'm old and do not have as many good cards as you may think. I would always come back and play every once and awhile and if I was lucky enough a casual player like myself would beat one of these too good to lose guys. I have seen a few world class fits which resulted in people storming out of stores. Great video

  • @shadowles5
    @shadowles5 5 лет назад +3

    I remember my first FNM. I managed to win the first two rounds and i was really happy. Third round i ended up against a complete prick. I was still very new, and i had no idea what 99% of the cards did, and i remember this guy would play a card, and then silently start moving the board around, playing tokens, moving counters, and i had no idea what was going on. I lost the first game pretty hard, then the store owner waved me over and literally told me to pay more attention and call the judge if i think he's cheating, because the guy had a history in the store.
    So halfway through second game, i notice that he stacks all his land cards on top of each other. He doesn't spread them out, nope. Flat on top of each other. So after he played a couple spells and a creature, i called the judge over. Turns out he was played 8 mana worth of cards, with only 5 lands on the field. Even though it was super minor, the judge DQ'd him because he'd been caught cheating in the exact same way several times (at the same store).

    I would say some of my top people I could do without are:
    People. That's it. Just most people in general. I grew up playing back in high school (93-96) and after having some of my cards stolen, stopped for a while. I picked up again in the army around 98-2000, and again had cards stolen. That was basically it, I was done playing. Still, I carried my cards with me everywhere I moved, until one day, I decided I just didn't need them anymore. So I sold them and thought the $700 I got for all my cards was a pretty good deal, considering I never even used them. That is, until I started playing again (my gf's son plays, so I picked the game up again after almost 2 decades of silence.) Turns out that those Alpha through Revised cards I had were worth substantially more than $700. Add to that, the knowledge that Wizards is never printing most of them again, so I'd have to shell out $700 for most of them individually if I wanted them again just makes me that much angrier with people. Now when I go to my LGSs, I have to deal with rude people who alienate me because I'm effectively a "new" gamer because I took so long off. During my first ever draft (because we never did that stuff back in the day) the store owner asked if anyone present had never drafted before, and I raised my hand. One guy (a regular at the store unfortunately) looked over and yelled "Are you kidding me!?"
    And as far as just general annoyances, I'd have to say people who are slothful, and people who look through open card bins and treat the cards as though no one else is going to think about looking at or buying them.

    I would say-
    Smelly Obese Neckbeards: clog the tables and walkways, smell, if they fart, clear the room.
    The Smart Assed Know it All: They always know the better card, the better deck, the better play. One of their favorite quotes,"Then you would really hate my xxxx deck, it does xxxx by turn x and kills you".
    The Alpha of the Betas: The guy that has the girlfriend with him, she isn't there to play so well, mixes Smart Assed Know it All with weird conversations with his girlfriend about their sex life. Forms a dynamic duo with-The Loud Fat Girl or the Whiner.
    The Whiner/Witch: This is that girl or woman that plays obnoxious decks, especially in two headed giant or commander. They are fun and smile when everything goes their way, but don't be the guy that sees their growing table threat and starts in on counters/removal or attacks. All of a sudden, you are the bad guy at the table when you hear the cry,"Why are you attacking me!" When you continue to, fits will be throws and names will be called. Also look out for the pouts and rages. Can also be male. See-person that plays a Purphoros deck in commander, has been trolling the table with Norin the Wary, then resolves a Thopter Assembly. Then, Purphoros gets exiled, Thopter Assembly destroyed and about 25+ swing damage coming their way. They have single handedly dropped the table at least 60 total life points in a matter of turns. They then say,"Why are you attacking me? I haven't attacked, I haven't done anything! Stop it!"
    The Loud Fat Girl: She is the neckbeard of female gamers and her thunderous laugh is heard all night. May be seen with Alpha of the Betas. She may be jolly, but boy does she break concentration by boisterously laughing at EVERYTHING.
    The Poor Sportsman: Can never admit a loss. Throws fits if he loses even one match to someone, or a deck he does not deem worthy, usually a Net-Decker and and a Try-Hard. Also mixes with Smart Assed Know it All. Don't be the guy or gal without a tier one deck that beats this guy. Its always that he was mana screwed or you were lucky or he had a horrible hand(Even if you did have to mulligan).
    The Net Decker: Not that it can be bad at all times, but this guy hasn't had an original idea in years. When he says he is thinking about making a new deck, you know its gonna be off of a Pro Tour top eight list. He says he likes playing the decks, when in reality, he is just a vessel for the decks to play themselves. Almost anything that doesn't fit into a net deck category leaves him on slow plays, always checking your cards and generally thrown for a loop. If he loses, he can turn into the Poor Sportsman. 9/10 times, he is also a Try Hard.
    The Try Hard: This guy acts like he lives and breaths cardboard. Winning means everything. It's not a game anymore folks. This guy doesn't let a thing slip. But do be aware of this guy's pride getting to him and he turns strait into the Cheater. He will make sure that, no matter who his opponent is, that their deck is smashed. There is nothing casual about the game to him. Usually a control/combo player. Their decks are as painfully annoying as the players-See Ensnaring Bridge Deck.
    The Cheater: This is the guy that peaks cards, double draws, free scrys, mana weaves or strait up stacks his deck. He will take advantage of newer players by missing triggers. He will misquote rules. He is the guy that always has his deck ready when you walk up to play and just taps yours and you tap his back. He then goes about getting the perfect mana curve and every answer in his deck. Has many traits of a Smart Assed Know it All and Try Hard. Usually a Twitch as well, as his cheating is his high. He probably gets more off of getting away with a cheat then he does winning.
    The Twitch: This guy has had too many Monsters and is doing the hand shuffle/flick...all of the time. He plays with his lands, they are never in the right position. He vibrates his cards when he attacks like they are some kind of live action JRPG. He taps lands, then second guesses, then taps, then takes it back. He looks at the table with great intent-Tapped out, no cards in hand, tapped creature on his side. You play a creature. He stares at it, plays with his lands, shuffles the cards in his hand, straitens his lands again, then says,"Ok, that's fine". As if he had an answer to begin with. Usually a Try Hard.
    Well, those are my tops. I can deal with casual beginners and kids(as long as they know what they are doing to some extent). I can deal with people that build good decks. Heck, I can deal with people that Net Deck, but then turn the deck into something of their own. Its all about the attitude(or hygiene).

    • @jamesa.fitzpatrick1566
      @jamesa.fitzpatrick1566 8 лет назад +4

      +pine cone I would say hygiene can be a major issue as well, and it is not any particular size, gender or age group. I have played against players with such bad BO and/or breath that I wondered whether it was actually part of their strategy. I have gone home from a draft and changed my clothes because, an hour later, I still smell like that person! :P

    • @jlawsl
      @jlawsl 8 лет назад +1

      SIeepwalker1 Its not about having a girlfriend, its when they play and start having loud conversations about how much sex they have, or some other torrid details of their relationship. Especially if they are losing. They assume no one else has a person to go home with, being MTG players, so they throw in something akin to,"Don't care if I lose, I am getting laid tonight" at their opponent. Or the lap sitting, excessive PDA or, dare I say, "helping" with drafting among other things.

    • @jlawsl
      @jlawsl 8 лет назад +2

      Jim Fitzpatrick You are right, sometimes it has nothing to do with how overweight the person is when it comes to hygiene. I could say, embarrassingly enough, that I had bad hygiene as a gamer in high school. I have since learned and became aware of how nasty it makes other people feel.
      The thing about the big guys is, you constantly have to move for them, ask them to move, or wait for them to clear out the usually congested aisles of the game store. I guess its a required proximity thing with them. Not saying that all heavyweights are like this at all. Its just that the ones that are obese and smell make the whole experience all the more uncomfortable.

What's even funnier is I was thinking of the people I play Magic with and I have one friend that is serious 4 of those "people" in one match. He talks about his most amazing games that he came out with a win when there was no hope but somehow he did it, he thinks he's the best, thinks his deck should always win no matter what deck he is playing with, and rages if someone beats him. When I was going to Friday night magic on a regular basis there were 3 people who I had a problem with. The one guy who just dragged out the game as long as possible. I think he thought that it gave him an advantage as his opponent would get bored and stop paying attention. There was this other guy who would make up rules midgame. When I was a new player I would fall for this a lot, but still end up winning.
    And then third guy, he would play mind games. He was good at it too. He would get you to focus on other things or slightly nudge ideas into your mind. I didn't have any personal issue with him or how he plays. I personally think it is a valid part of the game, even though I don't like doing it. I just didn't enjoy playing against him.

    I like what you said about the cheaters , I was at a draft with one of the most well known cheaters in the town, and he brought a friend with him, I remember beating his friend, and then as i was going against the cheater in the finals , he asked me if we could split and and not play, which didn’t make any sense because I knew he was the better player and had an even better chance of winning because his deck was probably set up with cards he brought in outside the draft, and I told him I didn’t want to split that I would rather just win, I ended up beating him 2-0, which to me felt like the best game of magic I’ve ever played in my life just because of the fact I beat a well know cheater

    "Hey, so you guys wanna play a quick game? I only need like 6 more people c'mon just play." I've ran in to this so many times. The worst was at my Oath of the Gatewatch pre-release so there was this one guy he was like in his 30's and he didn't even participate in the pre-relase he literally sat there and waited for people to finish games early. Then he offered trades and offered to play with his modern mill deck.

    I had been playing Magic for about a week when I tried my new deck that I had built myself against this pretty experienced guy who sit at my lunch table in 10th grade. The way I had made it was buying about 150- 200 low cost black cards with effective synergy from tcgplayer, but not all of my cards had been delivered yet, and I was eager to try out my creation, so I patched together an aggressive demon type and used it. The game was about 13 to 7 before we had to cut it short because our lunch period was ending (I was winning, and not through just luck). When I was mid sentence, explaining to him the premise of my deck and how it was so effective with minimal setup he cut me off and literally said, "I mean you're so new, but you act like you know what you're talking about.". He pissed me off so much that I threw a water bottle so hard at the back of his head that it busted on impact.

    I play at a place where everyone is extremely competitive. I was in a tournament once where five out of eight people were running variations of R/G Energy Aggro because "That's the only thing that's good right now." To make matters worse, many of them are members of a species of asshole that I call "Standard Elitists," which means that once a card rotates out of Standard, it's no longer worth their attention. And they think everyone should follow that ideology. I was in the store once looking for Fate Reforged stuff, and a guy came up to me and said "Fate Reforged isn't Standard. Why do you care about those cards?"

    I had another player at my LGS running Naya burn. at the end of the game had literally 13 land in play. he was running multiple fetch lands. and drew nothing but lands while I was at 3. he ended up losing. he was the most respectful person after that. shook my hand and told me good luck in the next round.

    I think I may have you beat on the most land drops off the top. At OGW prerelease in the 3rd round I drew no lands at first, mulligan then draw 6 lands 1 creature. Mulligan down to 6... 5 lands and that same creature. Scry 1, land, put on bottom of library. Turn one he plays an ingest creature I draw a land (that's 6, technically 7 with the scry, of the top 8 cards at this moment). Second round he hits me with ingest, exiles my best card in the deck off the top of my library. On my turn I draw another land and pass turn. Round 3, ingests the second best card in my deck then I draw another land. Round 4 same thing again with ingest/land except now I can then play my creature. Round 5 he attacks. I say "if I block and trade with you this next one is gonna be another land, but if I eat the damage I bet you ingest something good again.. Okay I'll play the odds." So I block and we trade creatures. Next turn I draw another land, OF COURSE. After that I drew okay but quickly died

    I remember when I pulled a Geist of Saint Traft while I was on vacation. Of course, since GoST is absolutely broken, one guy really wanted it saying it was worth 20 €. I politely rejected the offer, I don't trade Mythic Rares unless I happen to have another.
    He probably was happy to get his hands on Damnation, though. I got to bring GoST back to Finland as a souvenir, and guy got what he needed for his deck.

    Honestly there is quite a lot to keep track of in a game of magic. I wouldn't directly call someone a cheater for missing a thing or two in a game. I remember a year ago at my first FNM I played out a Reclamation Sage for tempo and stated " You don't seem to have any enchantments, so no trigger". I had told him at the start that this is my first FNM and he had an Eidolon of the Great Revel on board. He could have told me that it was an ENCHANTMENT CREATURE. I had no idea there was such things. I feel like it was sort of a dick move.
    I have a couple of times pointed out that a creature has trample and such if they make a strange block. I know I don't need to tell them, but I feel like it is just fair game to point it out. One game I would have lethaled my opponent had I not told him that my token had trample. I ended up losing the game, but it was a fun game none the less. I think magic should be played a little like chess. If I'm checking my opponent he can't make a move that leaves him in a checked state. Magic could be a gentleman's sport, but sadly it isn't always.

I want to go to FNM but I don't have sleeves for all of my decks or a trade binder and I'm afriad I will be ridiculed for it being my first time.

    We had a cheater at a prerelease at our LGS. I was up against him in the finals. He would draw two cards at a time. On turn three, he had played three lands, two permanents, one instant, had not drawn any additional cards other than the ubiquitous one per turn, and still had nine cards in hand.
    In spite of his card advantage, he was still trounced by my Avenger of Zendikar with a Beastmaster Ascension out.

    I gotta say that I agree with most of the points raised in this video with the exception of the comments about the net-deckers. I usually love to play against those people because they're usually completely unprepared for the decks I tend to use which take advantage of the fact that I sort of expect certain cards to be used by my opponents. I'd probably have a much lower win percentage without the sheep following their shepherds ;)

    Cheaters definitely are the worse... I mean I've cheated while playing games, not necessarily in magic, but typically when I feel I'm doing really well, or when my opponent looks to be not having any fun, I'll start cheating so that the game evens out, and winning a close game is always more fun than blowing someone out of the water.

  • @edwardhelms
    @edwardhelms 5 лет назад +1

    I'm a magician, or if I'm feeling really pretentious, a sleight of hand artist.
    I've never cheated at fnm. In very casual games with friends, when I lost the game so bad, I'm a dead man walking, I'll cheat to do something silly.
    Like, how did I get all these firebolts in my hand while playing mono blue. Or suddenly a platinum angel is on the field. It always gets a laugh and then I scoop.

  • @TheJCdrummer

    DesolatorMagic, I have a dilemma. I cheated at two prerelease events. Once I allowed my opponent to miscount his damage he was swinging in with, and then subtracted the amount I could block from that total instead of adding up the total hitting me, and once I cast a spell without enough green sources. I didn't plan on doing these, I was just upset that I was going to have a below average record and saw these things happen. I want to make this right, and was going to offer the people that I cheated way more than the booster pack they didn't get, but I really worry about what will happen if it comes out. Obviously not cheating in the first place is the best way to avoid this, but that is no longer an option. I've tried seeing what other people have done in my situation but I have found nothing about anybody cheating and not getting caught and then wanting to make it right.

    You could add people that forgets their triggers each turn. Its annoying as hell to see someone tap a vigilance creature, or forget to draw a card from an enchantment if it happens multiple times. I don't have a problem with it if it happens once or twice in a game, but when you have to babysit your opponent. That's when the game becomes more of a choir than fun.

    This Video reminds me of Situation we had at our local Gaming Store about nearly 20 years ago. The Store owner wanted to do some sort of magic tournament but did not have a clue about the rules. So he asked one of the local players to make the rules for the tournament. The guy was also participating and we just assumed he used the standard rules but no he did not. He just changed restricted lists to fit his Deck. He had like four sol Rings in his Deck which were not restricted for this tournament (but only he knew). That guy got in first place (surprise surprise).

    At 0, I don't cheat, but will often ask how much the total amount of damage I take or will ask multiple times if there is a no draw card or some other special condition to read the card again. On the other hand, the most I've noticed people cheat with is drawing miracles, shuffling their hand, then playing it 2 turns later for its miracle cost, can't really prove it, but....

    Worst imo are the try hards. Theres a group that regularly plays edh near me that had to ban player for being to aggressive. He ran a mono green which in edh grows out of control very quickly, so people inevitably end up focusing on him. Problem is if you dared to attack him he would get visibly angry. Its like he expected everyone to just leave him alone despite the fact that he was by far the biggest threat on the field. One night some kid took him out with a niv mizzet/curiosity combo. He did not like such a low cost combo beating his $400 try hard deck and started yelling at the poor kid who was around 13 years old. Full grown man yelled at a kid until he was crying over a card game. He was banned from the store after that.

I was so god damn pissed. I ended up getting a thought-knot seer and a dragonlord ojutai out of my packs. just remember guys, magic is a completely fair and skill based game.

    I was at GP Melbourne which was modern last weekend and I was playing in a grinder on the Friday and I played against probably the most salty player I had ever met. And I had never seen someone so angry
    I was playing mono white soul sisters and he was playing U/W Eldrazi and after a long grind between him blinking his drowner of hope giving me three life a turn and making my Pridemates bigger I won game one and he was already pretty salty he kept saying "if I drew (blank) I would've won" so we go to game two which I lost and those two games took the whole 50mins as well as turn zero. So we were at 1-1 and we had to ask a judge what was to happen and it turned out the game was to go to sudden death which meant that the first change in life dictated the win or loss. Up resulting in a win and down resulting a loss. Soul sisters is designed to go up in life because of soul warden and other similar effects

The second guy had 5 amazing rare cards in his deck and we only used the packs from a box. This was the following week also. His deck was to good, I will admit my deck stunk.
