    Gen I think his distance is a huge advantage, that being said you have held your own up to here. One other thing Gen the commentary is fantastic I think you may have another career doing that after golf.

      For sure! I had to rely on my short game for this one 😅

    • @PreservationEnthusiast
      @PreservationEnthusiast 2 года назад +2

      He didn't really have any advantage. Gen's short game was better. People develop different skills to compensate. For example partially sighted people often have excellent hearing.
      I often see these golf channels eg The one with Claire and Paris golfaholics where the ladies keep on claiming advantage of forward tees. They then drive it past the guys and use their excellent short games to win the matches easily. It's tantamount to cheating. We don't let the guys putt to larger holes because their putting and chipping is poorer for example.
      Both sexes should play off the same tees.

    • @markvandermerwe4676

      @@PreservationEnthusiast no they shouldn’t. Men have a bigger advantage of something women can’t control,bring strength.everyone can have a good short game.that isn’t an excuse

    • @PreservationEnthusiast
      @PreservationEnthusiast 2 года назад

      @@markvandermerwe4676 Theoretically everyone can have a good short game, but women develop it better because they don't hit so far.
      There are women long hitters cheating by using the shorter tees and men short hitters disadvantaged because they have to use the back tees.

    I find matchplay far more fun than stroke play. In matchplay, if you have a bad hole, and you´re not going to halve the hole, you can just pick up and get your head back together. Then come back on the next hole. In stoke play, you have to hole out even when you´re into double figures, and then there´s no way you´re going to come back from that. Great stuff Gen, you definitely hold your own here; would be interesting for the old duffers who think ladies should play from the forward tees at all times to see this :)

  • @Ecka63
    @Ecka63 2 года назад +10

    Love watching matchplay Gen. Everyone brings particular strengths and weaknesses to the game so it's fascinating to see how a match seesaw from one to the other shot by shot. The 6th is a perfect case in point .... Choo had you on that hole, until he hit into the bunker and you had wedge that you knew you could hit close. Have to say, watching you stripe driver off the tee is some kind of special.

    I went to a golf school with Tom Kite one time. He explained that he could not hit the ball far and would never be able to keep up with the big boys on driving. his advantage was that "once I am within 100 yards, I'm deadly". While long drives can be a bit of an advantage, chipping and putting is where you win or lose.

    Gen: For the 6 holes shown in the match his length only factored in on the Par 5 and the Par 3. However, I was more surprised with the difference in wedge game from inside 100yds. I'm not sure if his wedge game is not as good as it should be or your wedge game is off the charts good. From inside 100yds, we're routinely used to you getting it inside 20 ft every time. I was quite surprised at how often he missed the green with wedges. In the long run at 6200 yds, he should have the advantage because on the Par 4s, he should be able to hit more fairways and be in better position using his 2I than you will using your driver. And on the Par 3's, he'll be approaching with shorter irons and he'll be able to reach the Par 5's.
    But it was a great match and I'm dying to see the rest of the holes. When you talk about the match play, how did having to make the 4 footer for birdie compare to shots you've had to hit at either Q-school or tournaments?

    Just like you say Gen... Match play (like Stableford) can equalize a "better" golfer, or in your case a more powerful golfer by the way you strategize your way around the golf course. Choo can hit tee shots farther but will have longer approach shots on par 5's. Your approach shots Gen, are SO much more accurate. You have a way of flipping the pressure back on Choo!! So much fun to see. Still rooting for you to get your LET card and finally make the LPGA... LET'S GOOOOO!!!!

  • @simonleach3812

    Gen, you've shown that you don't have to be intimidated by the long hitter and can play your own game. Matchplay vs strokeplay: You can be comfortably on the green in regulation and then your opponent chips in from off the green for a birdie. (The hole is never over until it's over!) If you need to hole that putt for a half, you have to go for it - it does not matter whether you lose the hole by 1 or several shots. But in strokeplay, those several shots matter.

  • @pahum67
    @pahum67 2 года назад

    It is a fair match from the point of view that all of the conditions are equal for everybody. Sure he hits the ball longer and that is an advantage in most golfing situations but in others it can be a disadvantage. He can only play his game and you can only play yours. We all come in different shapes, sizes, ages etc. As you said yourself you were able to attack the pin with a wedge and he was using a four iron and ended up in the sand. It isn't that his length was a disadvantage per se (he could have laid up also) but it did encourage him to try and pull off a much harder shot. This was very entertaining as you are both very good shot makers. Good job!!!

    Interesting enough is Jon Rahm has talked about how we should have a few dual events with the men's and women's tour recently. I think that is a great idea, but the biggest obstacle is figuring out the tees. My gut says allow team events, like two player teams which exists at the Zurich on the PGA, and have the women and men tee off what their tour averages. Then go from there with alternate shots or play best ball.
    Also the one downside with the men side is it's very distance heavy, and too many amateurs try to smash it like Bryson without any control or finesse like a pro. I try to pay more attention to the women's side when it comes to the swing since it is more fundamental over unique stances to add distance. I rather be more consistent at a shorter distance and go from there by slowly adding yards within my abilities. Strategy and short-game can easily shave off strokes for most amateurs without a steep learning curve like adding distance without losing control.
    Anyway, good video, and I like your strategic approach since it makes me think more as a golfer with how to approach shots and a course.

    I don’t know if you play match play with male professionals very often or not, but I think its a good thing for your upcoming LET practice.
    Nelly Corda can smash some impressive drives but if you get used to playing against that sort of distance, so long as it doesn’t bother, you then that can only be a good thing and I’d not considered your killer short game in the previous post, my bad.
    That and as others point out, your commentary is excellent, I’ve learnt a lot since following you. I hope that your upcoming tournaments work to your advantage.

    I think you should continue playing against people who have an advantage on you or who are better than you. If you show up to a tourney after competing vs male pros, you will have the edge. In this match, I don't think the advantage he has is as impactful on the blue tees, so I'm interested in getting to a course where the black tees are available. Great match so far, keep up the smooth well managed play, Gen!

    Medal play and match play are different. In a medal-play tournament, you are playing against the field whereas in match-play, you are playing only your current opponent. In medal play, a bogey puts you a stroke back against the field for the whole tournament whereas in match play, a lost hole only hurts you in the current match. Different mindsets are required. (But you know all this already.)

    I play in a 9-hole match play league on Thursdays, but I really don’t use any different strategy. It’s a friendly flight (the other nine opponents are friends). So, I try to shoot the lowest score I can on every hole and let the match play out.
    Probably NOT the best strategy for match play. But I find if I play to my opponent on every hole, I feel too much pressure and inevitably make an unforced error.

He has the ability to use more controllable clubs off the tee and still get to same distance as you on most holes but should be more accurate. Big advantage for him is on Par 5 holes if he can get on the green in 2. In a Match Play format some of the built in advantages of distance is negated.

    Hi Gen, nice vid, as usual :-) Given the difference in distance, and assuming a comparable skill level, I think statistically, the longer distance should yield higher results in the long run, because the longer distances will more often end up closer to or on the greens, and thus the chances of a 1st putt dropping should increase. So, I think mainly on par 4 and 5 there should be a statistical advantage for the longer distances, again, given similar skill levels. Anyway, it doesn't matter for this match, because you are playing well!

    Womens tees should be MILES ahead of where they usually are. The idea is not to even up the drives, but to give both the chance to go in with, say, a seven iron...

    I was never better than a bogey golfer at my best. But to me, the short game is different. Shooting for score (medal play) you don't want to 'blow up' on a hole, because you can't get those strokes back. Match play, you can 'win' with a bogey, or lose with a par. Each of you approaches the pin partly based on what the opponent does! Which makes each hole a game unto itself. And fun!

    Distance advantage depends on the course layout really. My home course is short like 6300 yards but it's narrow, hilly and a lot of carry for drives and approaches. You don't really need driver on a lot of holes because of the danger and force lay ups on par 5's if you don't hit it perfect. I can just use a 200/220 ish club because driver will bring danger into play on most holes.
