I don't know how much of the comedy was Norm and how much was a character; but anyone could see that Norm was a compassionate person. His comedy was next level. He went beyond the punchline and hit you when you least expected it. Obviously I wasn't close to Norm but mearly identifying with him in this time of loss is bringing me great sadness. I will forever miss you Norm. I'm literally tearing up. He was here a minute ago.
How odd to hear a dead man talk about another dead man. It really really sucks knowing that ill never hear a new interview with Norm again, never hear another stand up or anything but ill keep listening to what hes done and appreciate it.
This was a very moving and beautiful eulogy of what was obviously an incredibly dear friend. Thank you Bob for sharing - I have been going down RUclips rabbit holes of Norm's work all week - and appreciating him more and more. He will be missed.
Same.. I knew he was closer with Bob and was saving his closest friends tributes till last.. really want to hear what letterman says when/if he will put something out besides a twit pic
I was looking for this since I found out Norm was gone. Thank you so much Bob. Helped me get over this profound loss. There really needs to be some kind of big tribute for Normie.
"Honor him by getting him", Norm was a guy who would look into the camera from behind that news desk, definant and looking for his people, like he knew, despite the dead audience in the room, he had you going at home. He always made me feel special, just for appreciating his talent. No other performer has ever done that and I'm gutted for all those who knew the man. If he could make me feel like that, how did he make you feel? Thanks Bob, for sharing and honoring.
I love that Bob said, "all of you who loved him" giving us validation for our feelings of loss. Which feels strange because I never even knew I gave Norm MacDonald that much thought! But I feel terrible, so I realize how much he DID mean to me. That must be a unique gift, to connect on a such a personal level with other people who literally just see you on a screen
I relate so much to your post... I felt like I knew him, like he was speaking to me alone, and that I would meet him one day. I know that sounds crazy, but he taught me a lot about comedy and about humanity and I will miss him terribly, even if I never did meet him in person. No new jokes, no new show makes me unbelievably sad. RIP Norm Macdonald and thank you for everything you did.
As you said, Norm texted you a week before he passed with, “I love you.” He was saying goodbye. And you had no idea. How incredibly sad, he didn’t want anyone to see him so sick, even his best friend, wow.
I feel the same way. Norm was such a force, such a good influence to a lot of people. In this world today with all twitter trolls and fake people. Norm was always sincere, intelligent and his own self. I cried as an adult man to know we have lost a real genuine person that was funny as hell. I think norm said the following. Dont be sad that he died, be glad that it happened. The force of Norm Macdonald.
The most striking thing with his death is I have never seen someone's passing draw despair and praise from the likes of senators, prime ministers of countries, news anchors of the largest news organizations, the most famous and respected actors and comedians to open micers, and a giant swath of the general public. To me, he we will always be the greatest for how effortlessly he was the funniest, smartest, and most compassionate guy in the room simultaneously. A seemingly impossible state of being. I'm sorry, Bob.
For me one of the craziest ones was TMZ. The kings of all tabloids actually wrote a very nice and meaningful memorial to Norm. They didn't just report his passing. They actually memorialized him.
"You don't know me from his wind, You never will, yoy never did, I'm the little Jew, who wrote a bible. I've seen the nations rise & fall, I've heard them stories, heard them all, but love is only engine of survival"R.I.P. Norm MacDonald & Leonard Cohen,2 greatest Canadians ever
I love all the great memorials from fellow comedians --- it was obvious Norm was admired by his peers and that is something everyone strives for in this life
My mother passed away from cancer a couple weeks before Norm. The only comfort I can grasp is that my favorite comic is with my beautiful mother and hopefully enjoying each other's company. RIP to both of their wonderful souls.
I'm only 27, and I'm devastated I'll never get to meet the man who made me laugh no matter how tough life got. My first exposure to norm was in the movie Billy Madison, when I was a toddler. Ever since then I've loved the guy, and I've seen literally everything he's ever made public. My favorite comedian, and all around favorite famous person to have ever lived. My friends and I quote him all the time, and we will continue to do so until the day we too pass on.
I'm also 27 and Norm defied everyone and still made them laugh. He read Tolstoy and was a devout Christian. He was truly his own person and inspired me to embrace being unique. I'm glad he got to influence people our age in a time where conformity is encouraged and deviating is scorned. Norm did his own thing and never compromised. RIP battle axe 🪓 🙏 😢 😪 💔 😔
I've never heard Bob saget be so real and genuine and sincere. This is really hard to listen to at times because you could just hear the pain in his voice. I had no idea how close they were. Thank you for sharing this Bob. This is the best tribute I've heard.
Feels weird shedding a tear over someone you've never met. You get the "what am I doing?" feeling in the back on your mind. But Norm was one of a kind, and it really sucks knowing that you're never going to hear from him ever again. All the insanity of the world seemed like calm cool waters when Norm was taking it apart, making you laugh, and smiling along with you. There will never be another comic like him, ever. Going to miss him.
100% I’ve been in a massive funk since I heard. I watched him since I was a kid and it feels like I lost a friend, a friend I never met. How crazy am I, huh? 🤣

This makes me cry. I grew up watching entertainers take me out of my reality, and Norm and Farley were of the summit of 90s brand comedy. Robin Williams and Norm Mcdonald. These passings make me think about my life and what it means
The moment Bob said he got a text from Norm last week, that just read "I love you" - I completely lost it!! Waterworks activated... Norm was easily the funniest man alive, and the most genuine, caring person to boot! My favorite quote from Norm was when he said to Jerry "It's one thing to make people laugh, but it's another to make them smile." You will be sorely missed you old chunk of coal! Rest now.
I used to see Norm McDonald at Hennessey's in Manhattan Beach on random mornings. My husband and I often ate breakfast there. He was always sitting out on the front patio where we normally sat. He was always alone and always reading the paper. Always kind to his servers; a true gentleman. I was already such a huge fan because Norm was different. I loved his voice, his cadence and his nonchalant approach to any subject. He made me laugh all the time, but the times that I'll remember most were those times when my life was not that great, and he still made me laugh. At my darkest, watching him and laughing, I had an "aha" moment where I realized that I could laugh (out loud) while going through the toughest times, I would be okay. That if I could laugh while everything around me was falling apart, I knew I would ultimately be okay. Thank you Norm McDonald for the gifts you gave that you were completely unaware of . . . The world is definitely a bit dimmer without your human presence. Rest in Peace always. You were and are so loved.
4 months later we would lose Bob as well… I can only imagine how norm greeted Bob at the Pearly Gates….. most likely grabbing Farley with him…. ❤️❤️ 😞😞
We watched Norm, we laughed with Norm, we laughed at Norm, but very few of us knew Norm. Thank you for sharing who he was with us, Bob, and deepest sympathies for your loss.
I’ve never been so affected by someone’s passing who I never knew personally, I think it’s a testament to the truth of Norms kindness that shone through even when he was making jokes about something serious. Over the years I’ve sought to watch Norm clips quite regularly, some new and some I repeat watch because he is so unique, funny and smart. He was the most intelligent person in the room even if he didn’t seem so, by purpose. RIP Norm, you didn’t lose.
Same here, Norm fan from birth. In high school I made my friends rent Dirty Work on VHS. I re-watch Norm clips for years and send to friends and introduce them to Dirty Work, SNL Update, The Middle, sit coms, Conan appearances, The View, everything. I finally saw him Live a couple years ago, my eyes never watered from laughter more than that night. A pure genius, but even better in person. He will be missed.

When a best friend dies he takes a lot of shared memories with him. Things that only the two of you knew and could laugh at together. That feeling sucks. I know cos my best friend died young a year ago. There's no replacement of him.
Now those memories live through you! You’ll be telling your grandkids those stories. He’ll be missed dearly, but we must move on for their sake, it’s what they would want. RIP you’re buddy.
Amazing that he kept it a secret until the end. A great demonstration of stoicism and absolutely zero pandering of any kind. A quality that is fast-disappearing these days. Norm, you will be missed dearly.
"This is a bad one." Yeah. It really is. He was SO fast and could get away with things that others couldn't. And that was because he just seemed like a nice, kind man who really enjoyed making people laugh. There was no 'mean' to him even though some of his stuff was edgy. And you could always tell he was really smart but played that down. And keeping cancer out of the public eye for nine years? That's a person of character. Thanks for this man. Appreciated.
As a lifelong fan of Norm's, I've read and watched everything I could about him since his passing. Many kind and flattering words have been said, but nothing as heartfelt or beautiful as this eulogy. Thank you, Bob.
This is the closet I'll get to being at his funeral. Very touching Bob, thank you for sharing such a deep emotional moment in your and all of our lives.
The picture at 14:08 fucking kills me. In less than a year, we lost three of those four guys. Norm, Bob, Gilbert, the only one left is Jeff. Shit's fucked up, man, three phenomenal talents.
I can tell you right now, he did. Proof of that was how he would randomly contact people over the internet. Regular people who just posted a video of his and then had some nice things to say about it, he would contact them and tell them how much he appreciated that they liked his comedy. He contacted these two guys that do reaction videos and told them how much he appreciated them. They made a tribute a couple days ago and talked about it. The channel is "Frankenstein's lab" if you're curious. Also, Norm couldn't go anywhere without somebody showering him with love. He knew.
I listen to podcasts and play RUclips videos while I work. I can't think of any other celebrity whose death affected me like this. Listening to Bob talk about him I couldn't help but cry.
Ive only felt that way about a few. For me norm and robin Williams are just soul crushing. Sounds silly but robin felt like a parent but behind a screen. You could be having a shitty day and watching norm could change that.
I’ve watched countless hours of him on RUclips for the past few years and I rewatched clips over and over again, no one made me laugh as much as Norm. I’ve never been so sad for a celebrity death. He really was a gift to humanity. God bless him
I'm so glad he wasn't outed in those 9 years. We learn of a diagnosis and everything changes. Good on you, Norm. Good on those few who knew. Thank you for being there for him, for staying his chosen course. He bought himself 9 years of "Norm"al. Thank you , Norm.
I cried when I found out. Listening to norm growing up instead of music didn't give me points with the kids but it helped me through a ton of abuse and pain. Norm was a huge idol of mine I regretfully never met. The world is worse off without Norm. Rest in peace brother. Thanks for the beautiful podcast Bob.
I've never been effected by a "celebrity" death, although I do understand the sadness, but when I woke up that Wednesday morning UK time to find a text message from my friend that norm had passed, it hit me different, i drove into work feeling really bummed out, I got into work and felt a real sadness, since then I've been in this utterly low mood, I can't shake it, I would regularly rewatch his videos over and over, he never knew I existed, and he never will, but I'll remember him till the day I die, he was not one in a million or a billion, he was one of a kind, I'm not a religious man but at this moment right now I would Love to believe there would be somewhere in this crazy existence that there would be somewhere our consciousness goes that Norm could live on....Norm, thanks for everything
Same here. This is different. I read or hear a celebrity has died, on with the rest of my day, not giving it another thought except maybe as small talk. But this hurts. Thank you to Bob for doing this. I'm sure it will be cathartic to all of us that thought the world of Norm. I'm at a loss for words.
This is the only time any celebrity death has ever had me tear up. Norm was the one person who on my worst most depressed days I could turn on to make me feel better. RIP
When I googled Norm’s passing, and I saw an article that said: “Norm MacDonald Dead”, the first thing I thought about was how I think Norm would think that’s funny. The straightforward, no bull shit, shameless nature of it. And that’s what I admire about him most, honestly. Norm taught me that it’s okay to be shameless, funny even, for worse or better. Thank you, Bob, for sharing your thoughts and feelings on such a public platform.
I love your comment. It made me stop scrolling through the comments once I read it and had me just smiling ear to ear, thinking about how if I did exactly what you did and read that headline I would've had the same exact thought and laughed my ass off. I keep picturing Norm saying that exact word for word headline on weekend update and causing that classic audience reaction he would always get. The one where the audience would nervously laugh like they didn't know if they should feel guilty for finding it funny. Man he is gone way too soon, and during a time when the world truly needs a Norm MacDonald.
The first time I heard Bob say "one of the greatest gifts of my life is that he loved me" I absolutely broke down. Such a raw and powerful quote I think about it daily
Norm was absolutely one of the greats. I'm sorry for your loss and the loss to the world of comedy, a profession already on the ropes in this twisted, self-important world.
For once, the RUclips algorithm got a suggestion right. This was a beautiful tribute. Thank you. It's been a long time since I've been this affected by the loss of someone I didn't know personally. Norm was a gift and I'm so grateful for his ability to quickly lift me out of dark places in my head. Love to you and to all those who loved him.
Resonating with what you wrote. I think it was the humanity of him that shined through, but the beautiful genius of his mind, and his complete lack of pretense.
@Solitude Standing11 Exactly right. He was an absurdist at heart. He would slowly and teasingly reveal how ridiculous the world was. He would present himself as a bit of an airhead, a country bumpkin from the frozen North of Canada. Yet beneath the facade was a giant, beautiful brain that brought laughter into this world. If you can bring laughter and joy into this world you are a real saint in my book and Norm is a saint. Please God, don't let the funny ones die.
I came here because I heard the news. Bob was a caring and loving man. If norm was still here, he’d do something similar for bob. Such a tragedy, but somehow comforting to know he was such a good and loving comedian

Bob lived only 117 days after Norm died
This was a very moving and beautiful eulogy of what was obviously an incredibly dear friend. Thank you Bob for sharing - I have been going down RUclips rabbit holes of Norm's work all week - and appreciating him more and more. He will be missed.
Same.. I knew he was closer with Bob and was saving his closest friends tributes till last.. really want to hear what letterman says when/if he will put something out besides a twit pic
I was looking for this since I found out Norm was gone. Thank you so much Bob. Helped me get over this profound loss. There really needs to be some kind of big tribute for Normie.
My sentiments exactly... Been watching/Listening to Norm all week... RIP NORM. Thanks for this Bob Saget
He was hilarious and fearless. He's a gem 💎 that will never be duplicated. Go with God Norm 🕊
I went down the Norm rabbit hole on RUclips 5 years ago. He was totally my type.
"...like he knew, despite the dead audience in the room, he had you going at home."
Exactly. Thank you for expressing what I also feel to be true.
Thank you for putting into words that feeling
“I love you.” When you hear that from a guy like Norm, you know it’s real. That got me. Great tribute Bob.
And now Gilbert, too. That photo is getting real tough to look at. Hope they're having a ball together.
You just put words to my exact feelings. I cried for the first time over someone I never met. I realize now I did “love” Norm. This is just brutal.
100% There are legions of us who watch/listen to Norm everyday. He is so meaningful to us. It was so kind of Bob to give us a word during this time.
Feels like a friend died. It’s weird. I don’t usually feel anything when anyone dies. Seems like a lot of us felt that way about Norm.
YES. Feel the same way.
Love from Germany
I love that Bob touched on Norm's childlike quality. A lot of geniuses are really just big kids.
Norm would always tell his jokes with a boyish smirk & innocent eyes. Was wonderful
As you said, Norm texted you a week before he passed with, “I love you.” He was saying goodbye. And you had no idea. How incredibly sad, he didn’t want anyone to see him so sick, even his best friend, wow.
Norm and Bob are currently having a blast with each other wherever the fuck their disembodied selves are.
I’m glad you made this, Bob. This is the only celebrity death that has ever made me cry.

The force of Norm Macdonald.

This makes me want to be a better person. Thanks Bob. We’ll miss him.
The more I hear about this cancer, the more I dont care for it.

This is heartbreaking. Hearing how bad Bob was taking Norms passing and now Bob himself is gone. 😭

Excellent comment! Thank you!
I'm also 27 and Norm defied everyone and still made them laugh. He read Tolstoy and was a devout Christian. He was truly his own person and inspired me to embrace being unique. Rest now.
What bothers me about that part of the video is Norm probably knew he was going to die soon.
Thank you Norm McDonald for the gifts you gave that you were completely unaware of . . .
