You can't always write a chord ugly enough to say what you want to say, so sometimes you have to rely on a giraffe filled with whipped cream. Frank Zappa
I was the fella who requested this one. It's a favorite of mine and I think you guys get it pretty well. Admittedly Zomby Woof is kinda intermediate in terms of Zappa and accessibility. He's got a lot of music that's much less... out there. "Cosmik Debris", "I'm The Slime", and "Muffin Man" are all much closer to the mainstream in terms of genre.
Frank was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century creating a huge and varied catalogue using only the finest musicians. The deepest of deep free dives . The genre is Frank Zappa. Not everyones cup of Darjeeling by any means, but a musical genius non the less.
His first release, Freak Out, changed the way I listened to music. That was almost 60 years ago. I remember it like it happened yesterday. Saw him perform literally every time he came to Detroit. I'm the guy he wishes a happy Mothers Day to during the sound check (track 1, cd #4) of the Over-Nite Sensation 50th anniversary release. To truly understand his work you need to start at the beginning and work your way to the end. I miss him everyday. Everyday.......
Zappa - Inside jokes for well-traveled ears abound. An acquired taste and a force to be reckoned with. Welcome to one of the edges of the prog galaxy... The Zappa edge. A very deep rabbit hole.
They don't call it Frank Zappa's Universe for nothing. He took the rules bent them, mixed them, tossed them. He didn't care. He wrote rock, jazz, funk, punk, gospel, do wop, classical, you name it. What's interesting is that is not one of his more complex pieces.
Guys, you are doing a fantastic job with the tunes your spinning. ZAPPA is the deepest rabbit hole of them all with over 60 albums and some of the dirtiest lyrics you could never imagine. Also Zappa always put together the best of the best when it came to his band members. This whole album is FIRE...! Try "Dirty Love" and "I am the Slime" for follow up tunes.
Zappa! That request is gotta be some premium platinum membership shit! Lmao you boys stepped out on a very long limb with Zappa it's expert level shit lol
Ya know how they have those super amazing blenders/food processor things that some dude demos at Costco. It can mix and blend anything. Well Zappa was the musical blender. Super intricate and complex, his band was handpicked virtuosos. All his stuff was planned and written out, he often was seen conducting the band. Zappa was an amazing guitarist who never played the same solo twice. And, guess what? Vehemently anti-drug. His music sounds like he took them all, but nope. Check out Joe's Garage (act 1 was my intro to Frank). His Movie 200 Motels is a trip.
Zappa is a lot to take in at first, but he was a genius, and his music shows it. He delights in the absurd, and the musicianship in his band is truly unparalleled. Check out the entire Apostrophe album for a fantastic introduction into Frank's world. Some of my other favorites of his include Montana, Why Does It Hurt When I Pee, I Am The Slime, and Watermelon in Easter Hay. That's just a start.
Lol....this is like watching the dog who tirelessly chases the garbage truck, catches it, then doesn't know what to do with it. Try Gumbo Variations from Zappa's Hot Rats. That'll switch things up for ya..
The 70’s had so much creativity. Some songs, like many of Frank’s, you don’t really find that 4/4 groove. You just kick back and let the genius music flow over you like a sweet waterfall and soak it in.
Zappa is an aquired taste haha I had a brother about 6 years older so I guess you could say i was brought up listening to him!! All of my sibs are big on Frank! Here Fido 😂
This one a bit of a challenge. It was for me first time too. Now I’m def a ZappaHead. Remember this was produced way back in the stoned age of 1973/4 iirc.
Frank Zappa has over 100 albums with more coming out all the time. Tina Turner and the Ikettes are on background vocals on two albums. He has rock, comedy rock, jazz, fusion, big band, and classical albums with Symphony Orchestra’s out. Trying out for the bands were brutal often with more than one hundred guitarists, bass, keyboard players, and drummers showing up to try out for the band. He had some of the greatest musicians play for him.
The way you said "That's absurd" was very satisfying. Frank was a thing like no other and had the talent to surround himself with some of the world's most talented musicians. Clout from merit. Many now famous musicians got their start with Frank and many established musicians padded their resumes.
Your reactions were very similar to mine when listening to my first Frank Zappa album as a teenager. But after listening to it over and over Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention became among my top 3 favorite bands.
Oh NOW you guys are DEFINITELY in MY wheelhouse!!😮😂🎉🎉❤❤ My introduction to Frank Zappa in my life was back in the early to mid 1970s or whenever this particular album dropped which I think was late 70s maybe!! Anyway, it was like a two-for-one album one album was called Apostrophe the other one was called Overnight Sensation!! There was just something about the music and especially the lyrics of this double album that intrigued me beyond no measure and I became an instant fan and still am!! I saw Frank Zappa in his heyday let's say late 70s early 80s he used to do a block of shows in New York City at the Palladium Theater right around Halloween every year!! I was lucky enough to have attended several of those!! Matter of fact if you do the Muffin Man that someone suggested the live version of that one I was at THAT concert!!😮😮❤
“Montana”, “Inca Roads”, “My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama”, “Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow” and”Joe’s Garage” are all classic Zappa tunes worth checking out. He once testified in Congress against censorship in music, and he also came out with a concept album called “Joe’s Garage” about a future world where rock music is illegal. Frank Zappa has a massive catalog and definitely worth checking out. He had a sense of humor but his music was definitely no joke. 👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
i think "jaw on the floor" is the appropriate reaction. i doubt you heard 5% of all that was going on in there. nobody gets it all first time through. very dense song. haha. wonderful. frank's the best. does everything. i had all 60-something of his albums when he died. his family has put out 60 more since then...
Very entertaining reaction! This was written, arranged, conducted, and produced by Frank Zappa. He also played the guitar. He released a huge amount of songs - or pieces - all unique. All kinds of genres, mixed. But, it is easy to hear: this is Zappa. Pick something more! Or if you want to digest this one: there is a cover of this song, a live video, made by his son, Dweezil ( under the name "Zappa plays Zappa") ft. Steve Vai & Napoleon Murphy Brock. You should also check something more relaxed instrumental, like "Chunga's revenge"!
The genre is Frank Zappa. This song is from,Overnite Sensation, my favorite album of his. Try these songs from the same album: Camarillo Brillo; I’m the Slime; Dinah Moe Humm; and Montana
Out of ALL the Zappa albums THIS one is your favorite!!?? It's a great album, don't get me wrong, but man there are many that are, in my opinion, way better musically and lyrically and everything else!! Have you ever heard the "Live from the Fillmore East 1971"!?? Fantastic album!! The whole Joe's Garage series!!!😮 And again nothing against Overnight Sensation! IT was MY introduction to Frank Zappa, along with Apostrophe, but overall when you bring in all of Zappa's catalog Overnight Sensation was more "commercial" than just about ALL of it!! I mean it's pretty much the only album that more than one song was able to be used as a single for play on the radio!! That is EXTREMELY rare for Frank Zappa, and one of the main reasons why a lot of people didn't and don't know about him is because he didn't get very much radio play back in the days of FM radio late 60s 70s 80s!!! Anyway no offense meant or negativity men just trying to point something out!
You guys are really expanding your musical knowledge. That a good Zappa song. Although you might try Valley Girl as an intro to Zappa. I believe it was his only ‘hit’ song. It features his daughter Moon.
It's confounding how they could play such fast and complex music!! And I'm really into Frank's guitar and even his vocals. He's primarily renowned as a composer, and secondarily as a guitarist. He made some music films too. 200 Motels features his band and an orchestra exploring "life on the road".
You need to hear Willie the Pimp And Dinah mo hum Frank was his own genre He didn't really care about lyrics although they were always hilarious It was all about the music
Imo, Zappa was an artist where you wouldn't necessarily like all his music, but he put out so much great music that I think anyone can find a Zappa song they will love. He was a freaking musical genius.
Lead vocals were courtesy of Ricky Lancellotti, backing vocals were courtesy of Linda Sims, Debbie Wilson and Tina Turner, the Ikettes. This album and the Apostrophe album were recorded at Ike Turner's Bolic studios
The genre is, , Frank Zappa! Just wait until you check out Dyna-Mo-Hum! Or Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy! Or The Deadly Yellow Snow Suite!! Or, , there's too many good ones to name here!! Zappa is one of my guitar gods!!
lol, my first reaction to hearing Zappa was pretty similar, like "wtf". However when you listen again and then realise actually this is genius. I guess it depends how open you are to the unusual yet awesome too. Nice genuine reaction, entertaining.
I will add my agreement that R/E acts guys would enjoy more Zappa! He def grows on you. And like many wrote already, I'm the Slime, Cosmik Debris, and the like are more accessible songs, relatively speaking. The real fun comes with the discovery of the sheer variety of music he spent his entire adult life composing, performing and recording. Genius gets thrown around a lot and Frank would hate being called one - but he's as close as you'll get.
Welcome to wild, weird, and unique musical world of Frank Zappa. Everyone tries to label him and his work and it can’t be done. He was many, many things- a composer (he wrote every note), an arranger, lyricist and song writer, a bandleader and conductor, a multi-instrumentalist, an electric guitar god (one of the finest), an author, a filmmaker, satirist, political commentator and activist, a husband and father and a workaholic. Also his body of work is enormous and it’s all very different. It’s just Zappa music and it is unto itself. I’d recommend listening to the rest of Overnight Sensation (the album this is from) then Apostrophe. These are great starting points. They came out back to back with basically the same musicians. (Look at who’s playing with him.) They could have been released as one album. He had an incredible ability to find the finest, highly talented, unknown musicians and working with Frank launched many peoples’ careers. Frankly, only the best musicians could play his music.
Ha Ha, I listened to half of this at 1.25 speed ! I've had problems id'ing correct tempos ever since I listened to exclusively Motorhead for a couple of years .... More Frank please. Would suggest Dirty Love and Cosmik Debris for more commercial stuff.
I can see your totally freaked out....lol... Maybe it's a little early in your rock reactions to be tackling Zappa.....lol...If you continue try "Moving to Montana"
I been listening to zappa for over 25 years now, and not even halfway thru his catalog. Id suggest listening to Joe's Garage as a 2nd listen. It's a very likable tune.
Frank is his own Genre.
The further you go,
The farther you fall…
He's his own SEVERAL genres
Zappa. Genius. Do more.
Literally. IQ of 174 if I remember correctly
You can't always write a chord ugly enough to say what you want to say, so sometimes you have to rely on a giraffe filled with whipped cream.
Frank Zappa

I vote Muffin Man next.
Great choice✌🏼
@@peterhineinlegen4672 Great call.
And then the entirety of "Thing Fish"... ;)
Dina-Mo Hum
Dirty love

INCA ROADS IS A MUST!!!!!!❤❤❤
One of my favourites.

Nice gentlemen. Frank made 62 albums and had a hand in hundreds more.
Disco Boy is a must
Once you go Frank, you never go back
Zappa! That request is gotta be some premium platinum membership shit! Lmao you boys stepped out on a very long limb with Zappa it's expert level shit lol
Zappa is his own genre
Oh you're in for it now.... Zappa is a genius!
Frank Zappa is a rabbit hole worth diving into. He was a brilliant composer and phenomenal guitar player 👍🔥
Check out "Black Napkins"
Oh wow! You guys decided to take the deep dive! Frank is something else!
My favorite guitarist/ musician. A never-ending variety of music to choose from. Get down with your bad selfs, so to speak.
The Zappa rabbit hole is bottomless, diverse and outrageous
Ya know how they have those super amazing blenders/food processor things that some dude demos at Costco. It can mix and blend anything.
Well Zappa was the musical blender. Super intricate and complex, his band was handpicked virtuosos.
All his stuff was planned and written out, he often was seen conducting the band.
Zappa was an amazing guitarist who never played the same solo twice.
And, guess what? Vehemently anti-drug. His music sounds like he took them all, but nope.
Check out Joe's Garage (act 1 was my intro to Frank).
His Movie 200 Motels is a trip.
Zappa, you either love him or not definitely no inbetween
☮️❤️🙏🌍🌎🌏🇺🇸❤️☮️
Apostrophe/ Overnight Sensation, 2 must listen lp's.
Zappa is a lot to take in at first, but he was a genius, and his music shows it. He delights in the absurd, and the musicianship in his band is truly unparalleled. I think y'all may have noticed...Frank is a mindblower.
Frank Zappa is the grand canyon of rabbit holes! 60 or 70 something released during his lifetime, several more posthumous
Zappa had over 100 albums, including those published after his demise. He was non-stop creativity. And he had the top musicians in the studio.
"Willie The Pimp" is great, so is "I am the slime".
Lol....this is like watching the dog who tirelessly chases the garbage truck, catches it, then doesn't know what to do with it. Try Gumbo Variations from Zappa's Hot Rats. That'll switch things up for ya..
whew, what can i say About Zappa, he has a million songs, some ya may not like, but you will love most
He's so creative when you first hear him you're like uhhhhh i didn't know about this sh** but after a while you love it a lot 🤘
The 70’s had so much creativity. Some songs, like many of Frank’s, you don’t really find that 4/4 groove. You just kick back and let the genius music flow over you like a sweet waterfall and soak it in.
Frank's song RDNZL is the greatest jazz-rock song ever.
Frank's music is very absorbing. You can get hooked by it, musicianship is remarkable ❤
Yellow Snow trilogy, best Zappa introduction
Welcome to the freaky world of Frank. It's all good, just keep going 😮
Next Zappa track should be “Willie the Pimp” or “Dinah Moe Hum” but I ain’t paying y’all 💩.
You should do inca roads, the video with the claymation
Ok I know about Frank Zappa. But I’ve never heard that song before and I’m bopping just like you

Great intro to Zappa!
Illinois enema bandit!!!!! FZ!
Greatest musician of the twentieth century. Zappa was a musical genius not to mention funny as hell.
The way you said "That's absurd" was very satisfying. Frank was a thing like no other and had the talent to surround himself with some of the world's most talented musicians. Clout from merit.

A good, in the pocket, not-TOO-far out intro to Frank would be something like "Dirty Love" or "I Am the Slime".
tHAT WAS SO FUN GUYS keep up with it- Frank said "Jazz isnt dead it just smells funny" try Joes Garage maybe
Legend🎉🎉🎉
Never eat yellow snow
Lots of Zappa to check out. Inca Roads...Yellow Snow

Feeling that Sweet Leaf cough
“I’m the slime” is a good one!
Frank Zappa Valley Girl😂
Frank & Moon Zappa, to be precise.
Ha Ha, I listened to half of this at 1.25 speed ! I've had problems id'ing correct tempos ever since I listened to exclusively Motorhead for a couple of years .... More Frank please. Would suggest Dirty Love and Cosmik Debris for more commercial stuff.
Listen to Pajama People and San Bernardino from “One Size Fits All “
Left side, tuned in
That's Tina Turner and the Ikettes singing backing vocals on Zomby Woof!
The singers doing the backup vocals are Tina Turner and the Ikettes. (Long story -- and a great one. Look it up.)
These lyrics speak for themselves. Frank was the baddest MF ever.!
C’mon ‘Bobby Brown’ is a must do “I knew you’d be surprised” 😂
I can see your totally freaked out....lol... Maybe it's a little early in your rock reactions to be tackling Zappa.....lol...If you continue try "Moving to Montana"
you guys probably should have started with the Sheik Yerbouti album. a tiny bit easier to digest , but still plenty crazy.
I been listening to zappa for over 25 years now, and not even halfway thru his catalog.
Id suggest listening to Joe's Garage as a 2nd listen. It's a very likable tune.
I agree with @Chamomileable, you gotta do "Muffin Man"... live.
You like music? You should like FZ !
Nice!
