How To Know the Direction a Tree Leans

  • This is how a lot of professional loggers use to determine which way a tree is leaning, or which way it naturally wants to fall. Much of the time you can tell which way a tree is leaning just by looking at it. But it’s not always that easy. Especially when slopes, and multiple trees leaning in different directions are involved. Or when a tree is so close to standing straight up, it’s just hard to tell.

Good video Wilson, but...the surest way to tell which way a tree leans or will fall is to first determine where you want it to fall and then turn 180 degrees and that's where it will naturally want to fall. 😁🤣😁

A-yup, that's been my experience as well. And as it falls, it twists itself to drop directly onto the smaller "keeper" tree you'd hoped to save.

It’s way more difficult here on the east coast where trees are rarely straight with big, goofy crowns. I’m envious of your tall, straight sticks without all the limbs. Thanks for sharing. Good stuff.

@@WilsonForestLands I do the same thing with my axe here in Florida, but I've also done a lot of felling in Oregon as well. I don't think anyone taught it to me, its just sort of something that makes sense to do when you're felling a bunch of trees.

Y'also could get a bulldozer, and make them trees fall where you want them to fall. May not get the desired results on lumber quality, and then you'd have to deal with the root ball. Or, y'also could get a harvester to make quick work of them as well. That'd probably get you better logs for milling, but I have to question the cost effectiveness. But I like your approach. Just get out there with an axe and a saw, talk to the deer, and laugh at the bears. While forgetting what it was y'also were thinking about to begin with. Thanks as always for the video!

Everything you said is sometimes right but details are often different.
A stand will often have a prevailing lean
    Different species have their characteristics,
i.e. larch is sweepy leaning one way then growing away for awhile
Windy areas (ridge) will affect the grain depending on which
side is towards the open valley as the wing twists the stem.
Right hand twists is OK to a point but left hand will cull a pole or piling
On a breezy day the larch will sway together like kelp in the sea
Fir sweeps off the butt but often straightens out after 20-30 feet.
Fir often has long heavy coarse limbs that pull the stem that way.
Snow on the limbs will really pull a tree.
Limb bound stems in a clump can really cause issues.
With soil creep on a slope
the butts will develop a pistol butt curve as trees try to straighten up
while their roots move down hill.
Generally trees hang down the hill and grow toward the sun

This is a true story: About 20 years ago a neighbor asked me for some help to fell a tree on his property. I looked for lean, weight distribution, and safe drop directions. It was pretty straight and there was ample room in several directions. I asked, "which way would you like this tree to fall?" He looked at me, blinked a few times, and replied, "down?"

I don't think that the tree hugging works so well. I tried that and the tree looked like it was on each side of the tree that it was leaning in the direction where I was standing at that time. So the ax plum bob idea sounds good. I think what men need mostly in advice, is to know how to pull a tree into roughly the direction you need it to go, and to know how far you can realistically pull a tree. I know the size has a lot to do with how far you can pull a tree. But there may be rough rules for knowing this?? I do not like the undercut notch method, it is much harder to get the notch to connect on the other side. Most people cutting trees are just trying to get the tree on the ground without risk to themselves and buildings near by.
