    I agree with Jamal. This back glass open issue could’ve been easily nixed by user education. Hopefully when Highlander owners brought in their SUV for service the service advisors checked with the owners to see if they were aware of the need to re-close their windows to allow the hatch to open. Also Toyota could easily add a warning indicator that the window is open. I have a 2016 Highlander Hybrid and love the convenience of having the ability to open the glass. So for me to consider buying another Highlander model in the future without the open hatch window feature I will likely not buy it. The accumulated wear and tear of open close cycles of the hatch for frivolous access to the rear doesn’t make sense.

    • @stevenwelchtoyota
      @stevenwelchtoyota  4 года назад +1

      There is technically a warning due to the beeping that it does it is just not on the dash etc. The issue is that even if it was on the dash then people at the back door would not see it. That being said you would see it when you sat in the seat. I still think overall it is a salesman issue. Being a salesman I can tell you that there are good ones and bad. New ones and ones that have been around a while. New ones alot of times dont know, old ones sometimes dont care. It is definitely an education issue and that is one of the reasons I started this channel.

      I have the 2018 Highander Hybrid XLE and probably use the rear window lift up opening about 10x more than the opening the whole hatch. Back in 2018 when shopping around for a Highlander hybrid, I was going to buy the base 2018 Highlander Hybrid. It was a deal breaker when I discovered it did not have the rear window opening feature. I purchase the XLE with it. My 2005 Pontiac Vibe has that rear window opening feature and like the 2018 Highlander it's one of the best feature period. It is just so handy and utilitarian, No opening the hatch and stuff falling out of the car. So quick and easy to put stuff in and out. And transporting extra long stuff is invaluable. I guess the bean counters won. The other day I notice the new 2024 Toyota Sequoia has this lift up glass hatch feature.

    Hey Steven, I have had lots of Toyotas over the years and currently own a US-built 2019 Highlander (they're called 'Klugers' down here in Australia). I love it. I am looking to upgrade to a new hybrid. I love the pop-glass rear window on my kluger/highlander and really disappointed that it has been removed. I find it really useful when packing the vehicle for road trips. It is much easier to add the last couple of items through the window with the hatch closed & carry surfboards etc. Am I correct to assume that it wouldn't be possible for Toyota to reinstate it on this model now that the hatch has been re-engineered? In any case, I just wanted to say thanks for putting the video together and for clarifying. I am a bit surprised how nasty some of these comments are! Relax people, life is beautiful! And yet the Highlander gate is probably still the slowest in the segment, removing weight to make it "faster" was a joke. People would much rather have an opening window than something that's still just as slow. It would seriously be more beneficial for toyota to use faster lift gate parts, has nothing to do with weight.

    If it’s true, that was the stupidest reason why Toyota removed that option from new models. What kinda idiot you should be for not knowing how to open a rear glass. It was the main reason why I picked 2019 model when 2020 just came. Toyota said it’s number 1 reason? Seriously? Usually when you are buying a new car, your dealer supposed to describe you all features. Even though it’s so intuitive. From my opinion that was the best feature for Highlander. 1st it’s quick to drop or pick up something from your car. 2nd in some narrow places it’s the only option where you parked and cannot open your rear door and 3rd when you buy something long which won’t fully fit, you can just open your rear window to load and drive with no problem. I moved pretty much everything this way which won’t fit with the rear door closed instead of renting a trailer. Initially my dealer told me that Toyota removed it due to complexity and breakage issues, but I never had any issues with my rear glass. So, I guess idiots around are the only reason why they removed it.

    • @stevenwelchtoyota

    I am pretty sure our 2011 gives a unlatched glass notification if not, it's not that hard to add one. Idiots made them take a VERY useful tool away. We use the window so also the lift gate doesn't wear out. Why Cater to stupid people? Is that really your biggest complaint? If so, I would be happy. Toyota should bring it back. If you can't tell the window was open and actually stayed stupid long enough to contact a dealership, you shouldn't drive!!! READ Your Manuel!!!!!
    We have an '03 Trailblazer also. Back glass opens. There's a light on the dash that says "rear access ajar" when glass is open and "lift gate ajar" when door is open. Why can people do this in 2003 but can't comprehend it in 2023. I think Toyota's reasoning is flawed and it's just easier not to make it open. They need to bring it back. So the third row in newer versions seemed to get cramped (like it wasn't already) and did away with the glass opening. Sounds like they're regressing in perfection. I don't care about my lift gate opening 2 seconds sooner. I care about longevity and convenience. Oh Toyota smh.

  • @timmelvin9356

    Very lame reason. This is the dealers fault. I was at a couple of dealers looking at the different 2018 models and the salesmen NEVER showed me that option. In fact they barely went over the vehicle and they didn't seem very well informed. I got most of my info on my own on line and figured out the rear glass when I wondered what the button was for.

    It is a very stupid reason not to have the back window open. Because it does not open do you realize how many cubic feet that you lose for space. When I travel on vacation with my two cats and everything that I need I can open up the back window and shove in many many many items that I would not be able to put in if I wasn't able to open the window. I will never buy another Highlander if they don't bring that back. I was thinking of buying a new 2023 but no way will I do that now if that back window does not open. I can't believe that people are so stupid that they wouldn't test that little button on the back.
