Toyota Troubleshooting (Automatic Lift Gate): How do I Re-Calibrate the Power Back Door in my SUV?

- Welcome to Belleville Toyota!
In today's video, I will be demonstrating how to re-calibrate the back door on vehicles equipped with an automatic lift gate. There may be some instances that cause the power back door to need to be re-initialized. Luckily, this is a super easy thing to do!
If you have an automatic lift gate, ensure you are not manually pushing or pulling the door, as this may cause the door to require calibration.
Love the power back door and looking to upgrade? Call our sales team at Belleville Toyota (613-968-4538) to book an appointment or test drive.
We're here for you.
This video was a life saver, you just relieved me of the headache my 2016 RAV4 was giving me. God bless you
Let me preface, I love Toyotas. I am 100% a Toyota guy. But the powerlift gate design on this generation of Rav4 is pathetic. My mom had a 2003 Volvo XC30 with power open/close. Worked perfectly. 10 years later, Toyota has the worst design I've ever dealt with.
Nah. Only Toyota I’ve ever owned and a few annoying things-chiefly this-just turned a potential repeat customer into a protestor and boycotter. Fuck Toyota until they issue a heartfelt apology to the tune of about $60,000 and a video of whoever designed this shit finding out they lost their job because a bodybuilder covered in boiling diarrhea beat them into a coma.
And don't forget no escape latch in boot of SUV 😮. Has to be done with 2 different screw drivers. Ridiculous
Wonderful short video and to the point. Saved us a trip to the dealership! Thanks for posting.
2021 Highlander now I don’t have to bother my mechanic! Thank you!
You're very welcome!
It helped, but my rear door is only opening about 75% of the way. Can’t get it to go all the way. I’ve tried all of these steps twice.
It would be best to contact your local Toyota dealership and speak to a technology specialist or service department to further diagnose and hopefully fix the issue you are experiencing.
Worked great on my new Highlander, but it really is heavy lifting! thanks 😊
My 2020 RAV4 TRD got stuck open for whatever reason, and I had to manually close it then do the open and close steps from this video, and it worked! Thank you so much!
Glad it helped!
Even though my Rav-4 is a 2015 model, the instructions helped my fix the problem. Thank you so much for the video!!!
The real issue as told by The Car Nut Guy, is for some stupid reason, (bean counters) Toyota changed from a cheap, simple, easily accessible single motor drive system to these ridiculous power drive shocks.
This was the best, clear, correct explanation of how to fix my 2021 Toyota Venza rear door noise when closing. Everything you said, step by step was correct and it worked. No more noise. I am so glad that I did not use spray on the struts or make a trip to the dealer. I use the back door daily and I think the issue started when my company tried to close the door for me without using the automatic button! Thank you soooooo much! Good job.
You're welcome!
I only did half of it. Since apparently some JA had just gone in and turned it off in this rental…….
Saved me a trip to the dealership- thank you
I have a rav4 xle 2021 my back door self opening was terrible experience to me when i start the engine it will open automatically ..when i lock with the fob key it will open again ..im 3 meters away to the parking lot 😢 when i came back its already open ..
I hope this video will help me
Crossing our fingers for you. If it does not work, it's best to contact your local Toyota Service Department and speak to a service advisor and have a technician take a look at the vehicle.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR POSTING THIS DETAILED VIDEO.
I had been dealing with a rubbing/moaning/groaning hatch final closure on my '21 Venza and at least for today, it is now SILENT again.
You're very welcome!
Didn’t really work for me I got a 2015 Toyota Highlander prime I believe and the arrows didn’t work I also didn’t see as much variety in the settings I only saw like 4 settings
I fixed the problem of my Rav4 se hybrid 2018.
Thank you Blessings 🙏🏼❤️☘️💐
I have a 2019 Rav4 and this worked to open it, but when I went to close it, it did the double beep thing over and over and would not close, so I had to close it manually. Any pointers?
The rapid beeps are normally associated with a long press and hold which sets the power back door, please try a quick press and release and do not hold the button. If the issue persists it may be possible that a battery replacement is required or that it is another serviceable issue. Please visit your service center.
@feliciapaz7371, power liftgates are very sensitive to low voltage; did you solve this issue after replace 12V battery?
Fixed my Rav4 prime 2022... thanks
It works for my Lexus RX 350 2020. Thank you so much
Glad it helped!
My Toyto cc gxl hybrid 2023 don’t have push button on remote neither indide the car sick and tired everytime I have to manually open it all time carrying grocery in both hands bit annoying
As we are not familiar with that model, it's best to see your local Toyota service department to have your concerns addressed.
Mine randomly stop closing and just beeping like something is in the way but there's nothing in my trunk. We've tried resetting it twice, kinda freaking out because we're supposed to go on a week long vacation tomorrow morning
Apologies for only seeing your comment now, hopefully you were able to figure out the issue. It's always best to contact your local Toyota service department for technical assistance.
Worked perfectly! Thanks so much!!
Thanks for the clarification. My car is the same car and suddenly the door only opens in half
awsome!!!! Worked great on 2018 Rav4 XLE
The rear door will not manually open. No matter how hard I pull it does not pop open. I also could not open it recently when the battery was dead and I've been searching for a manual way to release the door open. Mine is a 2021 hybrid Platinum Highlander.
If it is an automatic liftgate you should avoid trying to force it. If the button on the rear door is not releasing the liftgate, please visit a service center to troubleshoot the issue.
Is there a way to reset the 2015 Highlander? Mine is alarming "Glass door open" but the glass door is not open.
Good morning Anne .. this sounds more like a sensor issue. I would recommend having your local Toyota dealer take a look as the sensor may need to be replaced.
Tx u saved a vacation able to close the door
Very nice, however it would be helpful to know what years this is accurate for, as it does not work on a 2017 Sienna XLE AWD
Thank you for your input, we will keep this in mind for future videos.
Maybe the dealership will answer….
Thank you, this worked for me.
Glad it helped
Saved us another trip to the dealer shop😮💨
got my 2021 highlander opening again, thanks.
how do you do this for a 2015 ..that doesn't have the dash?
This may not be available for that year, it is always best to check your car's manual, or contact your local Toyota service department and have a certified technician take a look at the vehicle.
:) Thank you.@@belletoyota

Video posted by Belleville Toyota
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!
Thanks it helped us just in time
Glad to have helped!
Hello! I have Toyota Venza 2021. Everything was good, but suddenly my PBD kick sensor stopped working(. I've recalibrated it, like you sad on this video, but it did not help... kick sensor still not working (((. And it is "on" menu...
If all the steps have been followed in the video, and the Power Back Door is still not functioning, it's best to take your vehicle to your local Toyota Service department and have a technician take a look at the vehicle.
No, the PBD is working but the kick sensor- no... and it is "on" in the system menu(
Try watching our video on Kick Sensor: ruclips.net/video/fdsD68iMrSc/видео.htmlsi=TYAQWkAw2GaPfCNL
Super helpful. Thank you!!
As a single mom, this is a nightmare. Keeps happening to me. It's so hard to closed and open the trunk. I had a mini van, Toyota, never had this issue. It's so frustrating. This should be fixed in all cars that are experienced this type of issue.
Thank you fixed my rx 350 today
Glad we could help!
Thank you
Thank you very much.
Thank you! So far so good!
Thank you so much
Thank you
Thank you
Hi. Does this work on Lexus RX PBD as well ?? Has anyone tried ??
Thanks the only video that’s works you should received a million of likes😅
You're welcome!
2019 hybrid rav4 xle, it has no pbd option although I have one, I tried system it just said no messages, so I Tried the bsm option, dont think thats gonna get it. Any new ideas from the dealership????
If you have tried all the steps in the video, it's best to see your local Toyota service department so a service advisor or technician can look into this further for you.
Thank you very much for the well done video. My Highlander's lift gate now works properly.
Great to hear! You're welcome.
Wonderful, I expected to have to see the dealer and get a part/ module.
My 2021 rav4 was beeping and not opening. This worked, thank you!
I don't know how to turn it off with our 2021 Rav 4, can you give us some help please, thank you very much!
@@HoangNguyen-gy1ll I just followed the video instructions
I just bought the 2024 Sequoia Capstone, and the lift gate would just beep twice at me when I pressed the remote. The on-screen setup was a bit different but when I finally found the PBD settings, it was already turned off. Turning it on fixed the problem. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
Glad it was helpful!
Yours was the 3rd video I viewed and the one that worked! 2019 rav4. Ty for sharing
Glad it helped! You're welcome.
Thank you!! You are simply the best .
You're welcome!
You really helped me!!! I have a 2016 Rav4 XLE that I could not get the tailgate open at Costco!
Worked perfect for 2016 Rav4. Been messes up for a while a d quit completely a couple of days ago. Thank you for posting this!
Great to hear!
Will you please explain how the object sensor work. I am talking about 84260-0E040. From the technical point of view!
It is best to contact your local Toyota service department and speak to a service advisor or technician.
@@belletoyota I thought you could answer that simple question but thanks!
Thank you, works on my 2017 Lexus RX350
Glad to have helped!
Works like a charm! I just reset my lift gate! So happy!
Glad it helped!
Be sure to check the button in glove compartment...if you change battery you MAY need to reset the button.
You save my day.tnx
How about those older models? Mine is 2009 and it won't close. Is there another way calibrate mine? Thanks
We would recommend having a technician review your situation if you are having trouble closing the lift gate. Given that this is a 2009 model you are asking about it would likely require additional steps to resolve.
I didn't work on my 2020 Rav4 xle 😢
If you've tried to do all the steps in the video twice or more, it may be best to see your local Toyota service department so they can further look into the issue.
This was about as easy as it gets. I tried so many other methods and was about to take it to the dealer. Thanks for the help.
You're welcome! Glad we saved you a trip.
FANTASTIC!!!!!! Thank you
Mine beeps but it won't open. Is there a way to open it manually
We are not sure what to suggest here but would recommend you visit your local Toyota dealer to have things checked out.
Is this applicable to a 2014 XLE?
This does not apply to most 2014 XLE models as they do not have the same display information screen. This feature does exist on the Highlander though.
Thanks, This procedure resolved the issue on my 2017 Rav4. Too easy!! My issue was the gate would stop closing after about 2 inches. I would press the button again and it would open again. then I f press the button again it would close properly
You're welcome, glad our video helped!
@@belletoyotaI'm having issues like this comment, and after following your steps in the video, I'm still having issues.
Do you have any alternative suggestions?
If you recently changed the battery you may need to reset the button in the glove compartment.
If you've tried to do all the steps in the video twice or more, it may be best to see your local Toyota service department so they can further look into the issue.
Worked like a charm for my Toyota RAV4. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
@@belletoyota I actually spoke too soon. It worked one time when I turned the settings off and on and followed the other steps. But now it’s back to same thing again. Would appreciate any additional tips.
Tailgate will not go down after resetting it. Any additional advice??
If you have completed the steps in the video more than twice, it's best to speak and see your local Toyota service department.
@@belletoyota not gonna believe this but, I opened tailgate this morning, press the button to close out of pure habit and it worked. I realized it worked after about 15 minutes of driving. 😂😂😂
Thanks for taking the time to reply. You guys rock! 🤟😎
I have a 2023 Highlander XSE and when the lift gate tries to close automatically, the latch tries to close it all the way but it disengages instead and beeps and stays open. I have to manually push it in so the latch can fully engage the close position. Thoughts?
It sounds like something is blocking the closure and causing it to stop. I would check the cargo liner or cargo mat to see if it could be blocking the closure or causing any resistance when closing as this could be the issue.
Same issue I’m having with my 2023 XLE. I’m starting to think there’s some manufacture issue
My 2020 highlander won't shut. It beeps for a long period then won't shut. I have to do it manually and we pay way too much for these vehicles for this to be an issue that the warranty won't cover.
Thank you thank you!!!!
You are so welcome!
Thanks. Fingers crossed
🤞
This is great thank you for all involved in showing us this .
What if it still doesn't open?
In some models that have a power rear door with glass that opens you must make sure the the glass is securely closed as this will prevent the power door from functioning properly. Please check to see that the glass is closed and then try again. Hope this helps.
We have a 2021 Highlander Platinum and the lift gate would get stuck during the opening process. I tried to change the settings from 1 -5, but still would not open completely in one step. We even had the dealer look at it during an oil change but they said it was working normally when they tried it… so frustrating because when we got home it was back to having issues.
I tried this process and when I turned the PBD on and tried to open it opened about 7/8 of way and then beeped. I press the button to close and it closed all of the way. I tried to open one more time and it opened/closed all of the way in one shot. I then did these steps once more and when I opened it back up it worked PERFECTLY! Cycled it for wife 5 times in a row and worked… We were already ready to take the vehicle to the dealer.
Glad to have helped and save you a trip.
How do you open the hatch?
Depending on the model year and trim level, there are different ways to open the vehicle hatch:
1) by pressing the hatch button on the remote key, if available.
2) by pressing the hatch button on the driver side console area, left of the steering wheel, if available
3) by pressing the hatch button on the hatch handle.
4) by using the kick sensor, if applicable, which you can watch this video on how to properly engage the kick sensor, if applicable : ruclips.net/video/fdsD68iMrSc/видео.htmlsi=KAzkR0X1ZON4nj7D
