    Geez, the negative comments. Go and ride one first. The Domane is an amazing bike. Sure, *your* bike might be comfortable getting you from A to B but imagine an even smoother ride than what you have now. Imagine how much fresher you’d feel at the end of a long ride. I only have the Domane SL 6 (Aeolus Pro 37s) but I couldn’t be happier.

    Have the Project One SLR7 (w DI2). New Bontrager TLR upgrade wheels. 32s Tubeless. At age 73 the extra pound or two of the bike always mentioned by reviewers is of far less importance to me than some extra weight I’ve accumulated. The key is the fabulous comfort. 3 hours on the saddle is quite enjoyable. Moreover it is possible. Not looking for lowest time, rather looking for extra years which thus bike may facilitate. 3,000 miles of Florida rides in 6 months! Thank you Trek.

      A mature and avid rider myself I can fully appreciate this. Increased comfort on road bikes is the best thing that happened to cycling the last 15 years - allowing more people to keep riding longer. Bikes like Roubaix or Domane give such great options.

    Thanks David - I especially appreciate your comparison comments in this review as you haven't always included them but they are very helpful when choosing between bikes. Cost and weight are also the factors keeping the Domane off the top of my list. IMHO expensive carbon frames should equate to a bike weight less than 8kgs. Given the length of this generation of Isospeed, which means it effectively duplicates carbon in the top tube, I am not sure how much Trek can bring the weight down in the future though if Trek is serious about positioning the Domane as a performance endurance road bike as compared to being an all-road bike. Effectively I want the Domane to be a more comfortable/relaxed geometry Émonda than a gravel bike.

    The new Look 765 endurance bike is the exact same frameset as their gravel bike, minus a few waterbottle mounts. More and more it looks like the gravel bike is the new endurance bike --- and it should be: you get 90% of a roadbike with the right tyres, but keep all the offroad and touring and commuting flexiblity.

  • @jrstriker12
    @jrstriker12 4 года назад +6

    I have the SL5 Version with Shimano 105. The weight of the frame isn't much of a factor IMHO as long as you're not racing. It's plenty fast for local club rides and so easy and smooth, the miles just melt away on long-distance rides. I think riders who race and are looking for a snappier, lighter and faster Trek would probably be better off with the new Emonda. But if you don't do any racing and are really more about endurance rides, comfort, and enjoying the miles while moving at a good pace, I think Domane is the way to go.

    • @norcalchrismeister
      @norcalchrismeister 4 года назад +1

      I also have the SL5 in rage red and it's a really fast and comfortable bike. After I do a 20 mile ride, I feel I got a really good workout and body still feels good. Someday I might get an Emonda but I'm lovin the Domane for now.

  • @TalesfromtheGreenway
    @TalesfromtheGreenway 4 года назад +12

    The weight penalty is in your head. Every segment was a PR on my first ride of the sl5 in stock form. These bikes are fast, you have to ride it to believe it. Considering I'm not in the high mountains it makes very little difference, it also doesn't feel fatigued or heavy out of the saddle on the upper body. The other benifit of being over built is its durability.

    • @TalesfromtheGreenway
      @TalesfromtheGreenway 4 года назад +1

      @@tobycolin6271 It's funny, my friends kept saying a newer bike would be faster and I kept denying that, I couldn't see their logic and I really like my old bike. Truth be known one reason the domane is faster is the 40cm handle bar. I feel significantly less drag over a 42cm bar, however with the tidy cables and areo tubes it does go downhill with less resistance.

    the bike - especially in this configuration courtesy of SRAM - looks great especially for a winter bike, with mudguards. The increased weight wouldn't bother me for that reason. Force eTap does need a break in period. I’ve ridden 130 miles on my new (Force equipped) Tarmac and the noise has reduced, to a very efficient and quiet level. The chain drop issue, comes down to front derailleur setting. When positioned in the easiest gearing, that front derailleur needs to be almost touching the chain. Backing it off even the slightest will result in a chain drops. It’s a very fine line... but when set correctly it’s nearly flawless. I absolutely love it:-)

    I think you over exaggerate the impact of weight of this bike for 99.9% of riders, as a proportion of the overall weight of bike and rider then the impact is negligible. What is more important particularly in the UK is how composed it is on poor road surfaces and of course durable. I have the Pro version with the shorter head tube and have racked up 7000km this Year on it including multi day and club rides. My average speed is pretty much the same on my race bike without the comfort and ability to fit full guards and have internal storage.

    • @donadams5094
      @donadams5094 3 года назад +3

      While I agree that the extra weight isn't a major issue, I think David is just observing the difference between this and other bikes in this class, and noting that at this price point it is reasonable to address even small drawbacks. For someone like me -- 90 kg, not looking to race -- it makes essentially no difference at all. And in as much as this is a comfort/endurance bike, not a racing bike, maybe those for whom it would make difference would be looking for something else anyway. But as I think about buying a high end bike for myself, I do get how top spec matters. Even looks, which have no impact on speed, matter in that sense. For multiple thousands of dollars, I want a bike that hits ALL the right marks. That does not include weight in my case, but it might for others, and I get why David includes it as a consideration. And let's face it, if he didn't offer at least some bit of criticism the review would be less credible. No bike is perfect, and especially those that come at a premium price should have their entire profile evaluated.

    Domane looks like an almost perfect road bike with gravel possibility, perhaps a bit heavy. But. It is 2020 and this bike has partial cable integration. Why? Why not integrated cabling? How many people buy cars with cables or wires showing on the front? None, because cables are never visible. They don't look neat and make washing more cumbersome. Full cable integration is the way to go. There are also easy and inexpensive solutions for integrated cabling.

      Try packing your bike for transport. You’ll appreciate Trek’s solution.

      The Domane has dual IsoSpeed and the front mechanism makes it very hard for engineers to design a fully integrated cable system around the tight clearances of the front headtube.

      The cable routing is no big deal. The front isospeed is facilitated by it as well as easier packing for travel. The bike is smoothly fast. T
