I believe that the story of "the reader" is true in real life and intact the story of the author himself or one of his close ones. No one can depict the story in so detail so short and with such accuracy if it didn't happen with them. Many things match with Bernard like his age during 1958. His present day 1995. Many things are Similar. So I think that's a real story. And if that's a real story. That was a very sad ending. I would have love to read about Hannah life after prison. In this completely changed world for her. How se adapts to it. How she and Michael again get together. How he reads to her again while she takes a sleep at night. How she takes care of her daughter Julia . How after so many years of loneliness she gets atleast 1 good person whom she knew and someone in this world who understands her and can carry her legacy??. This book and movie moved me totally from an emotionless Boy to a Man having felt he has a heart too.
When I watched the reader for the first time, I was totally hypnotised by kate winslet's performance. I got the novel n read that too. Absolutely loved it.
A beautiful love story which tells us: Love has no age limit. Hanna and young Michael have amazing on-screen chemistry, love them. I really like the music too.
@wong uhh.. clearly you missed a lot about this movie. she was a very disturbed woman who did this to many children & it messed this kid up for life. I don't think you were paying attention
This is not a love story. This is grooming and pedophilia. Stop romanticising this abusive relationship. If it was a 36 year old man and 15 year old girl, the comments would be very different!
To be fair, there’s quite a few films made about relations between middle aged men and teenage girls and they’re considered quite iconic films too. American Beauty, Manhattan, Lolita, etc. So I think you’re wrong and also overestimating how much society actually frowns upon men preying on girls.
@@localshithead7430yes and this one is a really good movie with great performances, but, it's crazy how, for example with Lolita if people don't know what the autor wanted to say it's so controversial but with this one is a really beautiful love story that shows love has no age when actually it is a toxic relationship that ended up traumatizing the main character
One of the few movies I can watch over and over again. Beautiful movie, perfectly casted. I’m currently reading the book just to understand their characters a little bit more.
I've never watched the movie's like this, this is the masterpiece, it looks like a real story, let me know if the book help You out to understand moore of their characters....
Daniel Bujas The book did give justice to Hanna’s character like made her more human. Some details on the book that were omitted on the movie actually made me understand her dilemma of choosing between love and pride (yes, she did love Michael). Nevertheless, I like what they did with the movie, like how this complicated love affair affected Michael’s entire life thereafter. The ending in the movie has a better redemption in terms of Michael letting go of his ghosts of the past.
@@genegrey356 It looks like the book is a little more polished, did You know that the most filming locations are in the Gorlitz and, the church shows twice in the movie is located in the Czech Republic...
Thank you so much for sharing! I have plenty of questions after viewing. Am glad that both of them really did enjoy each other's love & companionship. Tho the ending was.. sad
A masterfully written story, and one brought to film with great sensitivity and with quality performances; however, I see quite a lot of romanticizing of their relationship in the comments. Let us not forget, he is a 15 y/o child. If it had been an adult male portrayed here with a 15 y/o girl, we'd all be losing our minds. She was a human tragic figure, of course-- and with a great many unfavoribley checked boxes. That does not absolve her of quilt from the indefensible violations of a predatory nature towards a 15 y/o young man still under the care of his parents.
Yes, and it's actually an abusive relationship, but people who don't understand the story says it's a really beautiful love story while Lolita was so controversial because lots of people didn't understand it
Yes, beautiful love story. Their love is genuine. But Michael is left totally screwed up by the relationship. They are very intimate with one another, but very distant as well. That's what happens when a 15 year old boy and a 36 year old woman try to become a couple. It's a beautiful train wreck. Hanna was a beautiful, but tragic character. She obviously was born into very humble roots. She was able to explore the depth of her soul with Michael, and that eventually is what killed her. I've read the book, but I haven't seen the movie. The book is only 220 pages. A very quick read. You won't want to put it down once you start.
hanna is illiterate but a kind hearted woman.. i just cried when hanna killed herself. titanic- jack died the revolutionary road- april died the reader- hanna died
If anything, Hanna/Michael is a very interesting pairing due to its deconstructive element: In this case, it's a deconstruction of the age-gap romance: -Hanna is older than Michael, as she is 36 and he is 15 and they do connect physically. But they lack emotional connection, as emotionally and physically speaking, he is too young for her. As a result, Michael feels isolated and does admit that what he had with Hanna was an abusive relationship(in the books, she is verbally and physically abusive towards him) that damaged his psyche on the long run.
Did anyone notice that probably the reason why Hanna cries in the church is because it reminds her of the fire when she was a guard? Ps I didn’t read the book, maybe the book tells it
I SWEAR TO GOD what are these people thinking? Because of their reactions I’m now wondering if the movie/book had the intention of actually make the audience support the relationship?? But there are so many cues that indicate she was an abuser (obviously excluding she was a murderer) She was clearly mentally ill even from before we knew who she was Am I a horrible interpreter or are these people in the comments distracted by the music and the scenery? I’m forcing myself to believe the story is to make us aware of our bias for pretty white women, and to make us challenge it/ confront it within ourselves
I don't feel like i can glorify this kind of love .i mean she was nazi and we know what they did. Just because she had a love story it doesn't make this love story glorified.

I simply love this remarkable film. How haunted Michael was by Hanna. I'd love to see this released in DVD format with ALL deleted scenes added. Bernhard Schlink's book is a must read if you are obsessed with this movie. This film moved me to memories of my years in Germany and my German heritage. Der Vorleser.
@cult Watch agree, she never told the kid love words, I felt sorry for him. In the other side, the way he loved her was so genuine, I think old Michael was expecting she said 'I love you' in her good bye letter at least, but not even there :/ ....
Yes many of my friends have similar love story like this who cares nothing is forbidden even a boy loves his teachers and ends up with her when he is a bit older..
@@rommybarriga3590 I think she felt unworthy of him and perhaps a bit ashamed of their relationship and sadness from it. It reminded her of what her life could have been if her history had been different - happily married to an intelligent young man with her being young and literate, sharing their thoughts the way only lovers can.
