Melvin is a complicated and flawed man suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, probably Narcissitic Personality Disorder and some other behavioral issues, but somethings have touched him and moved him beyond his routines that were propping up his life but never allowing him to grow. He was caged and trapped and angry about it all. But then he takes in a little dog and the dog opens him up to the possibility that he can love and grow and he sees Helen, who was once confined to his compulsive disorder in a box, and she breaks into his world, his life, and he falls in love with her and by the end she comes to love him. Who knows if they succeed, they have a lot going against them as a couple, but a lot going for them too. Wonderful film.
NPD is too loosely used nowadays. Probably more like on the spectrum ..... asperges? It's a neuro issue not a mental health/ personality disorder. (Obvs accepting the OCD diagnosis asca given). @@carolinebond5615 NPD as a diagnosis isn't likely overused. Narcissist as a descriptor is extremely overused, at least amongst the "dating coach" community. While I can't speak to the diagnosis part in Melvin's case, the descriptor is highly accurate. The world around him is there to serve him as he needs, everything (and everyone) else is just filler. I mean, he pays for a home care nurse to take care of his waitress' sick son just so that she can come back to work and wait on him. That's way outside the realm of OCD.

Most married men or those in long term relationships I've seen many of them don't do or have any of the things that brought them comfort before the relationship. Most male friends I've had over the years once they got married, they threw out or sold almost all the furniture they owned before the relationship, they don't or rarely ever play video games, they don't stay out late drinking with their buddies, they don't make their own choices, wear the clothes they want, drive the car they want or go on vacations they want. It's because they've been fixed (similar to a dog) to better match to a women's wants and desires. This guy was probably better off not taking antipsychotic medication because most of that medication causes the very thing it promises to avoid. But now to appease her he started taking it again which this may end up killing his creativity which will make him a shitty writer, hell lose his job and his expensive apartment in Manhattan as a result and he'll be homeless or die in a ditch somewhere, meanwhile she will have already moved on to the next rich writer living in Manhattan, or moved back in with her mom which didn't seem like that bad of a situation to be honest

This film without Jack Nicholson´s genius acting is worth nothing. Helen Hunt didn´t act well, and she was an annoying personality during the whole movie, specially the crying in the kitchen scene... it was bad. Jack deserves 2 oscars.
He didn't say anything to insult her. He implied that they let her in with something she had already bought, whereas they where asking much more of him, something he didn't already have and wore on a regular basis.

Ah, but the compliment WAS all about her. He's telling her that she's his inspiration. He's putting her on a pedestal. For most people, telling someone that they are a positive inspiration for others is the highest compliment.
Also, ladies...he is LYING. He wants to get in her pants and he found the key. An overweight, balding middle aged man might WANT to be a better man for her, but ain't happening. He's set in his ways. I also wish I was taller. "You make me want to be taller with a big dick."

This could have an absolutely fantastic movie if anyone other than Helen Hunt had been cast. So close.
" you look so sex... you look eh great " haha
I like your dress, I think it's cute and with your beautiful curled hair. I think you look pretty. I was shocked he was so rude to you. I once saw someone that I hadn't seen in a while and they said so I see you're still driving that old car. Men can be rude to our face. Like I have money! Women usually don't have money!
Brilliant performance by Helen
excellent movie.
I don't know why but I seem to always find myself loathing and being impressed by Jack Nickolson in equal measure.
I got paid the best compliment of my life and I've completely forgotten what it was
Magical. From both.
This film without Jack Nicholson´s genius acting is worth nothing. Helen Hunt didn´t act well, and she was an annoying personality during the whole movie, specially the crying in the kitchen scene... it was bad. Jack deserves 2 oscars.
I love this movie and i love this scene
He didn't say anything to insult her. He implied that they let her in with something she had already bought, whereas they where asking much more of him, something he didn't already have and wore on a regular basis.
Movie: As good as it gets
You want me be a better Man
❤🕊️🙏
‘You make me want to be a better man’ is just focusing on what he’s getting from her, what he’s feeling. In my opinion a compliment that was specific to her that didn’t involve him would be better
Ah, but the compliment WAS all about her. He's telling her that she's his inspiration. He's putting her on a pedestal. For most people, telling someone that they are a positive inspiration for others is the highest compliment.
I respect your opinion. Personally, to be told I inspire someone else to be a better person would dwarf any compliment I could ever imagine.
"YoUr MaKe-Up iS nIcE!"
Also, ladies...he is LYING.
He wants to get in her pants and he found the key. An overweight, balding middle aged man might WANT to be a better man for her, but ain't happening. He's set in his ways. I also wish I was taller.
"You make me want to be taller with a big dick."
*Clueless oaf hurts woman's feelings*
2:10 She: "You want to dance?"
2:23 Melvin: "... they let you in, in a house dress."
