The live you get what you play for, made me pick up the guitar, and only in the last few months have I realized what an influence Mr. Richrath has been on my playing.
Absolutely Loved the way Gary Richrath Played He Was Awesome Golden Country Flying Turkey Trot He played with all emotion! And the way he kicked one foot up! Missed got to see him several times not enough though! What him and Neal Schon and Guitarist Like that could get out of a Les Paul! I am So Glad that Great Rockers like You keep this out there! Gary Richrich was an influence on my playing - I have a copy of their 1st Album - which is really good - but did not sell well - their 2nd is one of my all time favorites -REO 2 - Wow- With Kevin Cronin - who they wisely got back - They came to our College each year Truman State Now - R.I.P. Gary
I saw REO several times in KC during the heights of their powers in the 70’s and 80’s. He was absolutely one of the best ever and also one of the most underrated.

Who was Gary Richrath? Well, in my eyes, one of the greatest lead guitarists that ever laid hands on a Les Paul. I've heard so many of the greats duplicated. Yet to this date, I've never heard anyone duplicate Gary's style or sound that he could make. Thankfully, I first heard R.E.O. back in late 73 or early 74 and became a fan of Gary's playing in the midwest before Kevin destroyed the sound of the band with his wimpy style. Gary Richrath, Neal Doughty, Alan Gratzer, and Gregg Phibin were R.E.O. Speedwagon, and it was Gary that took them to the top. Without him, who knows if anyone would have ever heard of them outside of the midwest. RIP Gary and Gregg! Keep rocking the heaven's!!!

Awesome video here of Gary. One of my top 3 guitar heros. I was surprized to see the clip of REO with Terry Luttrell singing Ridin' the storm out. That was way, way back when I got to work with REO through Factory Productions. Some seriously great memories, well at least what I can remember of them. Back then the dope was great, cars were fast, ladies were faster, and rock~n~roll was "OUTA~SITE"

I feel really Blessed to have been a teenager going into High School and What I Consider The Greatest Era of Rock Music and being able to go see many times REO Speedwagon with Gary Richrath and His Guitar solos taking you on a journey in your mind with a Smile that made it Fun! Recently on RUclips I have had alot of fun watching Younger Generations that have these Reaction Videos to Hearing Songs and Music they are just hearing for first time even Vocal Coaches that teach and a lot them watch The old Live Performances ( always the Best way to watch or listen) so many have watched the older REO Speedwagon videos and the very Songs from The Late 70s to early 80s and Classic Songs like”Golden Country, Roll With The Changes Songs that showcased Gary Richrath’s Solos and nearly every reaction they are So Amazed with Gary’s Ability to take the listener’s on same journeys I remember from seeing them Live and I Love that this many years later Gary Richrath Deserves that He was Special! Really Such A Shame that a True Rock Hall of Fame that should have been carefully put together and Built to Honor The Legends Like Gary Richrath and the Amazing Rock Musicians that Deserved to have that Honor Bestowed to them when they were alive to Celebrate! The Debacle that Really is just what seems like a Rolling Stone Magazine Awards showcase the Magazine itself is Really not a True Music Magazine and doesn’t know if it wants to cover Elections Social Issues more Politically motivated than Honoring What these Incredible Musicians did for So many the chance to Celebrate Living !
Golden Country from Live You Get What You Play For may be the most KICK ASS solo ever recorded. Gary was chainsaw on the Les Paul and honestly not a lot of people came close in that era. Another ASS KICKING lead was Back on the Road. Just a Les Paul straight to a Marshall. When they got MTV famous, he was limited because of Cronin but even the solos on KC wimpy ballad kicked in the ass.
Without Gary female fandom would have drop precipitously or maybe be nonexistent. No straight guy would pay money to see Cronin prance around in his silk pajamas!

I don’t like these guitarists who think they have to play every effin note on the whole neck. Duane Allman crafted unbelievable solos from just a few simple shapes on the neck and he was ten times better than these guys who play ten thousand notes and don’t know when to stop. I’m sorry Gary had such a tragic ending, but I think he’s totally overrated.

Gary's playing style is inseparable from the Les Paul guitar. Always one of my favorite guitarists.
I think your right Mike, I don't recall him ever using anything but Gibson, I love Gibson's.

My only regret is that I knew and was friends with Paul Leka and I could have met Gary if I wanted to but me and Paul were too busy playing Roulette!

Gary was not the least bit overrated. He was way underrated throughout his career, mostly because of the fluffy stuff of Kevin Cronin.
