Their 1973 album 'Abandoned Luncheonette' has always been (and still is) one of my absolute favorite records by any artist. My sister brought that album home from a trip to London in the seventies. The only popular song on the album is 'She's Gone', but the other songs are so amazing! Wonderful duo work with alternating vocals and really mature and gorgeous music with a great variety. Much, much, much better musically than their later 'hit songs'. I'm pretty sure you will enjoy all the songs on that album.

LOVE THESE GUYS. Their song are so infectious. They were the WHOLE PACKAGE.... great lyrics, fantastic harmonies and every song had a nice "hook". The kind of hook that you would keep thinging about long after the song was over. I heard a lot of their music on the radio going to work and their song were always uplifting. Thanks for reacting to them.

Master class song first time I heard it I thought it was a remake because it sounds straight out of the late 50's or early 60's. 1984 into 85' was a massive period for them. I remember when Big Bam Boom first came out. I was in 7th grade and it was all the rage on MTV. The "Out Of Touch" video was on constant rotation. I remember that one and "Method Of Modern Love" came out, same thing. Lots of attention. Really started to pay closer attention to them. Then I got to "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" and then I was hooked. I was also thrown by how crazy long Daryl Hall's hair had gotten to that point. So I started to grow it out really long and for the first time, I felt like I found a little of myself and started to fit in a little easier at school. Their music of course is timeless no matter what period they were in. They were a hit making machine with confidence and creativity. And like everyone else on here...check out Live From Daryl's House. Such a fantastic show.

Really glad you reacted to this!! I've seen Hall and Oates several times, including on this Big Bam Boom tour in 1985. That was a monster tour, and HBO even had a concert film from their show in New York the summer before. The opening band for the 1985 show was Til Tuesday, which was also one of the greatest opening bands that I ever saw (and I worked in the concert business for 23 years). From this album I also highly recommend "Somethings Are Better Left Unsaid" and "Method of Modern Love".

Was a big Hall and Oates fan way back, still am. Got to see them once back in '83 - great concert. Looking back at my Discogs list I had eight of their albums once upon a time. Some of my personal faves are She's Gone, Las Vegas Turnaround, One on One, Sara Smile, Do What You Want Be What You Are...
For 80's tunes by some other you might not have heard I think you would enjoy after Out of Touch - Rise Up by Parachute Club, Echo Beach by Martha and the Muffins, Let if Go or Storm Before the Calm by Luba.
Another few random comments I thought about while you were talking about in the context of listening to music from the era you grew up in. I grew up in a house where we always had music playing. I still have records from my parents and family that go back into the 40's and 50's, I'm still listening to music from the 1920's while discovering new music today. Support live music! Go out to see new music in person in clubs whenever you can. I can still remember wandering into a Toronto bar and seeing Holly Cole for the first time where there was maybe thirty people in the room, counting the band and the staff.

As previous commenters wrote I found great "Live from Daryl's House" shows on pandemic lockout times. Somehow they take me to finals of 70s and the starting 80s on a bridge that start Doobie Brothers with Michael McDonald on vocals to some 80s mid-tempo balads and catchy hits from Hall & Oates with the unique vocal tone of Daryl Hall, both mainly keyboardists. Side note: John Oates use to looks liked Lionel Richie 🤣

Está canción de Hall and Oates me encanta. La tengo en mi play list. Ellos han venido 2 veces acá a Chile 🇨🇱 con gran aceptación en los recintos de shows. "Out of Touch" "Say n Soul" "I can't go For That" "Private eyes" "One on One" "Meneater" entre mis favoritas de ellos.

This song cane out back when most teenagers still listened to the radio to consume 80-90% of their music.
Cable TV was only available in big cities… not many people even had a TV remote to flip between 4-5 channels!
The Walkman had almost as big an influence/impact on society in the US as the smartphone did 20 years later.
Funny to watch you🎉 guys react to Hall and Oates with such glee.
Though I really loved H&O as a pre-teen, as an adult I bought their” best of “ CD for a long road trip, and was sad to realize that there were really only a couple songs that didn’t sound so dated as to make me cringe and burst out in disappointed laughter! 😑🫠
Other “dance” music from the 80’s,- too poppy, or “emo” for me back in the days is now far more interesting to listen to/rediscover than the efforts put out by Daryl and John.😢
I look forward to watching you guys work through PIL, the Cure, the Smiths, etc…
    Happy holidays!❤

Hall & Oates son para millones de personas, el mejor dúo de la historia de la música. "Out of touch" es su mejor canción en mi opinión.

I don't know! You Two! All this dancing and bopping! Guilty as charged, born in '53, age 31 when this came out, my favourite Hall & Oates song. We really were lucky I guess to be born in the 50's. Lots of great suggestions below, another of my favourites not mentioned is 'Adult Education'. Great reaction guys, thank you xx

You would really like Live from Daryl's House. Daryl invites various artists from different genres to jam in his house/club and they play with Daryl's House band and play each other's songs. Here's a clip with Cee Lo Green singing "No Can Do"

A really good album, actually. Produced by the legendary Bob Clearmountain. SNL veterans G.E. Smith and T-Bone Wolk present throughout. The rhythm tracks are so interesting, usually a combination of Jimmy Bralower's programming and Mickey Curry's live drums. I'm a huge fan of their earlier stuff, which featured SO many of the best session players on the planet. Daryl is an incredibly soullful singer. His vocal embellishments are always colorful, never gratuitous. He has a great venue in New York state called Daryl's House, which I used to frequent pre-pandemic. Nice place to see (often more guitar-oriented) live music.

Because they hail from Philadelphia they've got what's called the Philly Sound. There were areas in the US, because of music influences, had their own sounds. Philly, Motown (Detroit), Chicago and St. Louis, New Orleans and of course Nashville. I don't know that any of these are still as compartmentalized today but as you react to artists you can hear those influences. That's why as you were saying older generations may still be able to enjoy the newer music. Similar to how Acapella groups incorporate styles from the Doo-Wop era.

I recall a Rolling Stone critic once said, "Darryl Hall is so chic, that if he were to have written Moby Dick, he would've made the whale off-white."
My favourites are Sara Smile and I Can't Go For That (No Can Do), which everyone thinks is about love but is about their frustration with the suits at their record label.

Members of this backing band were from a local band in the '70s in Southern Connecticut called The Scratch Band. They played at our High School dances! They all went on to bigger things including the Saturday Night Live band and the backing band at Live-Aid in Philly if I remember correctly.

... and then, from their earlier album, War Babies, something completely different from their usual Top 40 stuff, Is It A Star and Better Watch Your Back (w/Todd Rundgren on lead guitar, also produced the album) !!!

I believe "Out Of Touch" was their last number one hit. My personal favorite of theirs is "She's Gone" which featured Bernard Purdie (Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin) on drums.
