That Time Alex and I Went Road Biking to Key West

- Back in 2017 @The_Sampler and I rode our road bikes to Key West, which is about 200 miles. This sounds like an easy ride, as many people knock out 100 miles or more on a single road ride lasting only a morning, but this was a little different. In this video, I've included the entire trip as well as commentary from Alexander and I. I hope you enjoy it!

Only the og viewers can remember this banger😅7 years now🎉
facts
Damn, it’s wild to think. I was in middle school, now I’m in college watching this
didnt realized that it's been 7 years

real💀😭
Genuinely one of my favourite videos from Seth lol
I don't know if you'll ever read this, but this video you made years ago was actually an instrumental moment in my biking adventures. Being 16/17 and seeing you guys have an absolute blast on your strung together gear really got me inspired. Your bungie cords and bags set up inspired me to just get out there, regardless of my gear. Bungie cords and dry bags got me out on my first over nighter and since then I have done countless trips including biking from coast to coast in my home country of Canada. Thanks for the content over the years and never taking yourself too seriously. You have been a big inspiration for me and I'm sure countless others. Thanks Seth!
holy fuk bud u biked coast to coast?! thats awesome man hope ur doing good
What an accomplishment, congrats!!
Similar experience for me, similar recount I’ve written.
Hey fellow Canadian coast to coaster! When and how did you do your trips?
Woah coast to coast! What did your route look like?
"With a fresh six pack and a lit cigarette, he tore ass down the greenway." Fuckin bars, modern poetry at its finest. Bravissimo.
Charles Bukowski ?
@@statom985 I think so, may need to be fact-checked however.
Been watching BOTH y'all for almost 10 years now... I NEED part two of the Alex & Seth bike packing adventures. Come on boys! We can make this happen on the best bike packing bikes, top gear and repair/comfort items and it'll turn into a Legendary vlog on both channels.
Iconic OG Seth bike hacks right there!!!😊
fr i still call him that i miss it
i like the old videos. he was full of hopes and dreams he didnt know would be realized haha. would even reply to comments personally!
This video serves as a reminder that I have been watching for over 7 years now
I'm not saying we SHOULD do another bike packing trip... but if we were gonna.... where do you guys think we should do it?? (I vote we do on mtb's this time btw)
Great Divide Mountain Bike Route
California coast could be cool
Gravel bikes around the Cascades would be amazing!
Perhaps out of your budget but a bike ride from Po’ipu to Ke’e beach would be nice with appropriate stops. Since this might not be far enough for you, an alternative would be from Naha to cape Hedo on the island of Okinawa. Once you pass Yomitan it gets nicer and there is a great road stop which is cheap and tasty. The coast has a bike path on and off and provided you don’t ride after a typhoon, it is usually debris-free. I recommend stoping at Manza to refresh in the ocean or any one of a number of resort beaches. These often have jelly-fish nets but there is a fee to swim there. Public beaches are free but I would not get in much above waist depth without a body suit. There is a campground in Motobu just past the Family Mart on hwy 110. They have showers. The office does not have long hours but I have paid in the AM when getting in after dark. I don’t recommend camping in summer due to the heat. There are plenty of pensions that are not too expensive. Nago has some good ones just before you enter the city. While there you can visit Chuarumi aquarium. Plenty of places to eat either on Sesokojima or on Kourijima. Of course they have a nice buffet at the aquarium. Try “Taco Rice” which is not really Mexican, but tasty anyway. I never really carry much water because there are plenty of places to stop and buy a drink. Lawson’s is everywhere. (Like 7-11 only better) After Nago, there are fewer towns unless you pedal inland. I would come back the same way but there is a road on the pacific side too just more with more turns. I would also stay away from Aura Bay because the military is ruining that area.
I say re do the KW trip again. Little more prep. And do it in reverse too.
"this guy is a liability" perfectly sums up Alex and Seth's relationship ... In of course the most loving, and brotherly way possible. Hard to explain, but if you're an OG and saw how they laughed at that, you'll know what I mean!!
can't believe i've been following you for this long... and how massively your channel grew since...
thanks for this blast from the past.
greetings from Ireland
I love the guy at 21:59 with the cigarette in his hand, talking about the batteries with his trike.
That original 3-part series is what gave me the inclination of "Hmmm, maybe I should start bikepacking.." And you two should 100% do another bikepacking/touring video. The original series was so enjoyable, and your storytelling has only improved since then, so I, and I think a ton of other people, would love to see it!
Watched the original back when your handle was Seth’s Bike Hacks. So cool to see how far the both of you guys have came. Thanks for the years of encouragement and entertainment
This is one of my favorite OG videos
Back then, I’d had a thrombosis and wasn’t allowed to ride. I felt extremely frustrated and demotivated. This was the one video which made me want to put myself together and get ready to get back into cycling and mtbiking as soon as my doctor said I was ok. I have to thank you, Alexander and Brian for your videos. They helped me go through my recovery journey!
We need another bikepacking trip on road bikes with you two!!
This was my favorite series by far. I miss the vibe these older videos had
This and the tandem ride with Phil are my top picks for classic Seth videos. I would love to see another attempt on a touring or bikepacking trip!
Biking into the waves w the fat bike is one of mine.
@@cgstadler The cheap Walmart fat bike that went to the waves, then was part of a bail tutorial, then became a tall bike that we never saw again.
Seth, Alex, Phil, and Brian tandem bikepaking. This needs to happen.
i remember distinctly watching it when I was like 9 or 10 because I had just gotten into cycling
Same

Jesus christ I've just aged 1000 years. My knees are turning to dust.
22:08 "he tore ass down the green-way on his lithium ion tricycle" 🤣
That was great seeing you two from years ago toughing out a challenging ride. These two guys and BKXC are the first mountain bike youtubers I started to watch... and I still watch all three to this day.
I have rewatched this old seth video so many times because its so understandable
I remember watching this video while I was 7 years old, hyped that there was another Seth bike hacks video. Love to see your looking back on your old content!
Can’t believe this was 7 years ago. I also can’t believe I have followed the channel so long. Great vids Seth.
“Our taints were in critical condition” 😂😂😂 Best voiceover line ever!
I think you should do more of these retrospective videos. I remember watching these, and as one who is closer than most, I was not surprised that you, Seth, were somewhat prepared and not shocked that Alex turned out to be a liability 😂. It’s too bad you didn’t film your home life living with Alex TRL style- pretty sure that would make for an epic video.
As soon as you said 7 years ago i immediately felt old. Watching the original upload back then feels like yesterday to me
Seth this is one of the best videos ever, I’m so glad you pulled this out of the vault. Your narration, the editing- it so brilliantly captures the friendship and adventure. I feel like this could easily be shown at festivals.
Both of you guys have brought so much joy and entertainment to the world over the years! Thank you both!
I loved watching this trip back then and the rewatch was just as good.
Wow seven years flew by! You guys went on the adventure that folks of all ages dream of taking on, but seldom do. You are so lucky to have have each other to do this stuff. I have friends that love to ride, but I couldn't talk anyone into doing anything like this. Awesome stuff!
I love the cinematics of the seven mile bridge... So epic! ❤
I’ve gone back and watched that video multiple times. Even planned a road trip with my family using that video. Thanks for the trip.
I pretty sure I wasn't looking at this stuff 7 years ago but I've watched this trip through at least 3 times now and seen every single other video at least once and your one of the main reasons I got into mountain biking! Thanks for letting us ride with you today Seth! Always great entertainment!
This was actually one of my favorite video(s) you ever made! What a fun departure from the MTB content!
I can't believe I've been following you for that long and I'm glad that I do. This particular video got me badly hooked up to road biking :)
Your ride was one hell of an adventure, so much so that I used your video to help my research for my ride to Key West. I live on the west coast of Florida and rode 324 miles to get to Key West. Watching your video again brought back a lot of great memories, thank you.
That was so enjoyable to watch. Thanks guys. Crazy nostalgia vibes and a raw sense of simplicity and adventure 👏🏼
Best mtb vids ever man! Keep up the good work!
This was an incredibly inspiring video back in the day
I watched this seven years ago and enjoyed watching it again. Thanks for the memories...
This is one the best videos you have ever made. Maybe because it makes me nostalgic having grown up in South Florida in the 90's, but there is something pure and truly adventurous about it.
How was that 7 years ago?? Can't believe it's been that long, you two really inspired my cycling career!
That whole bit about the electric tricycle guy was hilarious. These types of rides are the best. Endless supply of shit hitting the fan, but so fun to look back on.
I can't believe that was 7 years ago! I remeber all of those videos. You two are awesome friends and have been a joy to watch over all these years!
Dude's, I've followed you guys since before this gnarly hair brained adventure and it's one of the best things I've seen on the YT! Real, raw adventure. Thanks guys!!
Please make more of videos like this one
I know its hard to leave your family for a few days but please make it for at least one day or something like that
I follow you since 2021 and i did not left your videos unwatched since that time
Respect❤
Ps: i am from Romania
An awesome video. Thanks for sharing. One of the best I have seen that really shows what the route is like. I can't wait to go!
I like it that you are showing us the longer travels and trips. Well done. Nice to watch.
Wow...7 years and still such a classic. I come back to that vid like 3 4 times a year
I regularly go back and watch the bike packing adventure and have always hoped for another one from you both it’s definitely up there with my favourite videos on RUclips
I watched this one when it came out! Thanks for sharing and the recap. You guys are great.
this is so real , its so great to relate to real life experiences in times when everyone only wants too show off awesome stuff in social media , thanks for the video !
Ii have bikepacked a lot and enjoyed this. Learning through errors in planning is hard but effective. It is good to never skimp on tires and to carefully plan one's route. Thanks. Fun to watch.
I did the same trip from Miami to Key West in summer of 2013. It was my first real take at traveling on bike. We did it in two days, logging 125 mi. on the first day and I have never wanted to do that mileage while touring again. It is more important to take it all in inch by inch and enjoy it... much like you guys, I was not thoroughly enjoying myself. It hurt. BUT trips like these exemplify adventure. Adventures you can look back at and be proud of. My experience was also rewarding and it fueled a fire to put together the whole Atlantic East coast in 3 other two week trips in non-consecutive years. Great video.
Man I love this adventure so much. I look forward to seeing more. They inspire me to make the leap into my own adventures. Thank you!
I still remember this as one of my favorite sagas on RUclips. I'll never bike this trip, but I've gotten a little taste of the experience, thanks to you guys. It was great revisiting it, years later.
You guys definitely need to consider doing it again! Iconic video and such an inspiration to literally just throw a trip together and go for it. Now you know the best route!
Started watching around 2018, fun to see the old stuff rehashed!
What a great story, and a great friendship. Thanks for sharing.
🚴🏼♂️🚴🏼♂️🚴🏼♂️
I remember this video. One that stuck in my mind after all these years!
Yep I remember watching those vids and all the previous ones including when Alex's shoulder popping out. I cant believe it was so many years ago. man Ive been watching your vids since you only had a few hundred subs. Still here and still enjoying everyone you make. Thanks Seth and thanks Alex for your vids too dude
Yesss, I remember eagerly awaiting the new parts of this trip as they came out. Crazy adventure!
This is so awesome! Unplanned rides are always memorable.
I remember watching this when it first came out and I've watched it dozens of time since. I would really love to see you and Alex do a part two at some point
Great to see that blast from the past and have you and Alex do commentary with hindsight. Long time watcher and fan of you both. Cheers guys!
Love seeing this kind of ride from you. Would love to see more, as someone that is both mountain and road, I appreciate this!
I remember watching the videos of this bike packing trip when you first uploaded them. I was doing bike deliveries full-time at a small, local startup before Uber eats and doordash existed. Seeing this go up in the early boom of both your channels was so cool and inspiring. I was just starting to really get into cycling, and seeing your reflection video makes me want to attempt my first trip later this year. Thanks for the memories guys! Can’t wait for that 2nd trip!!
It seems like just yesterday when this came out! Just kidding. It seems pretty old. Love the old stuff!!
I remember watching this from my office when it came out and totally being inspired to get out. I miss these classics!
I hope you guys do it again. Bike Touring / Bikepacking is my favorite. So many cool things to experience, from the mountains to the sea, to the people you meet along the way. There will always be some trials and tribulations, but like you said, they make for good stories 🙂
It's mad that this was 7 years ago, this video was the reason why I started watching and following your channel
Literally my favorite series you have ever made, i go back and watch it probably once a year, to me its the essence of OG SBH
This are my favorite SBH videos of ALL TIME!! Yes!
I remember seeing that one back in the day. Never forgot it!
what a wonderfull format! As a long time viewer its a bit a trip back memory lane remembering the video about alexs Shoulder incident. The video let me realize how far both of you came and how much time has passed allready!
As someone who has done many bikepacking trips. I remember watching the videos back then and thinking, yup this is how it goes sometimes. But you guys did it and you're not dead so mission accomplished! Love the recap and I still think about that video every now and then when I'm on a trip. Especially when I have a flat. Ride On!
Great fun. Thanks for sharing.
Still my favorite episode. Fun to rewatch it. Would love another bike trip journey!
One of my favorites, cool to see y'all reflect on it now years later! And wow, 7 years?!
I remember when this was first shown. It is still a good one!
We holidayed in Florida last summer and it was this original video that made me return to Key West after nearly 25 years. Sure glad I did and it won't be long until I go back.
Crazy to think I was 12 watching this. You really inspired me Seth. Thank you for sharing your crazy adventures over the years.
Still one of my favorite RUclips videos ever.
"This guy's a liability" Greatest comment ever! This was a great uninterrupted trip down memory lane! Thank you both for everything you do and for showing me, and probably others, that this is not a fun coconut, palm tree and blue Caribbean water adventure that I would ever want to go on! 😁🥳❤✌️
good memories.... :) this takes me back. miss these days. reminds me of a different period of my life
I remember watching this when it originally came out, and it made me want to do an epic trip like this with my friends!
I still go back from time to time and rewatch those videos. I have wanted to bike that trip for ages! I have biked from 7 mile bridge to Key West and still plan to do key largo to marathon. I'm going to the keys in a few days and hopefully will make that happen!
Driven that route many, many times. Never have I imagined riding down. Great video!
every time i would have a long road trip i would download all of the key west trip videos, it always kept me so entertained almost like a actual show
100% still watching and would watch another throwback like this, as a longtime subscriber, to me, I'm a guy that got back into mountain biking because of Singletrack Sampler and You, but didn't know at the time this was brewing, and after recovering from major shoulder surgery, this is what keeps positive vibes going, and my creative outlet flowing on the same platform, sincerely, thank you to both Alex and Seth for being REAL.
I’ve been watching both of your channels for that long those were great videos thanks for sharing these videos 👍
man what a throwback, this is what made me first found your videos. I loved wathcing your videos when youlived down in south florida as it was cool seeing someone ride the same areas i was
This was actually one of the first things / series I watched from you, absolutely love it and remember it to this day
Thank you for sharing your journey, loved it. :)
Amazing video. Thanks guys.
As much as I love their newer content and the journey they’ve both forged to get where they are today…. This stuff right here is some of their best work. I remember watching it when it came out, I felt like I was right there riding along with my buddies going through the struggles and the accomplishments! Hope to see another packing trip with you two at some point in the future! Cheers!
Enjoyed the video. Love the sense of adventure. Well done.
I did some bike packing back in the 90's. No cell phone, no fancy lights, no video. Just a map and a desire to reach home. Many great memories.
Golly I remember watching this as it came out....what a great series.
When you released this video is when I started watching both of your guys channels. To this day still some of my favorite videos from you guys.
I am 17 I have been watching since then and even before when Alex hurt himself is so great to grow up with your channels
I did this same ride solo, brings back such incredible memories. Good ride and even better adventure that you got to do it with your buddy.
