    Seth, part of the reason people watch your videos is your ability to communicate to your audience. You're very well-spoken and articulate your thoughts in a way that keeps the viewer engaged. Most MTB RUclipsrs don't keep my attention like you do.. allowing me to actually enjoy a 12 minute video of the RUclips industry without having to always review a product or something like that. Don't ever lose that aspect of your channel.. Hope your shoulder heals quick!

      Same - I feel like I'm the last of a dying breed of viewers who basically opens their sub page, watches any new videos from creators I'm subbed to that interest me, then stop watching. I'm never going to stop watching that way or watching Seth whilst his content keeps being uploaded and keeping his style/vibe - but I also appreciate that I'm in the minority here and most views come from non-subbed people who just watch whatever the algorithm feeds them

  • @jhoffman81
    @jhoffman81 7 месяцев назад +1

    The big problem is the algo has gotten so focused that it only suggest what you watch recently. The moment you enter search and watch a few videos your entire feed becomes that topic. I really wish I could just set the system to fill my feed with "new to you" instead of my history. I like all kinds of stuff in life and hell I watch things at times that I will never return too. This keeps me a well rounded person where I can see different views. Thats probably something most of society needs a dose of these days.

      As behavioral neuroscientist, I'll second this and add that in addition to known concerns about addiction to social media and rapidly shrinking attention spans, consuming short term videos may be related to increased risk of depression and anxiety. The causal relationships are not clear, it could be bidirectional, but I'm pleasantly shocked that youtube is going this direction. Really shocked. Maybe they realized the increasingly shorter content was too unpredictable? Surely it was not done for mental health reasons.....

    I can’t tell you how much I love seeing videos filmed in places I ride. Airstrip is a weird artifact.
    Thanks for explaining why some of my favorite creators are suddenly doing hour-long videos I’m not going to watch.
    I can understand why engagement isn’t as highly valued. As everybody adapts to the incentive structure, it gets gamed. And so much of that interaction is just…garbage that’s of no value to advertisers.
    Thanks for doing what you do. I’ll check out your substack, but I’ll admit to having a lot of subscription fatigue. I’m actually cutting back on them. Hopefully that’s not a trend that works too strongly against you.

    • @SethsBikeHacks
      @SethsBikeHacks  7 месяцев назад +24

      Yes, it's sad to see engagement take sort of a back seat these days. I subscribe to channels I want to see, and one by one they disappear from my subscription feed, and I need to seek them out again. Just because I will watch something longer and different if it's served to me doesn't mean that's what I would prefer. I choose to subscribe to someone because, "that's something I want to continue filling my brain with!"

      I agree with @owensnicholas and will add that I pay for RUclips Premium because otherwise I wouldn't watch YT with all the ads and I've been doing that for years now. Many of these types of videos about people leaving or not leaving YT refers to posting videos on YT for free and how we watch these for free... you may not get compensated the way you would like from paying people like me but I also don't consider myself as someone who is getting YT videos for free.

    Another really amazing commentary video from you! I love the way you presented this. It's well-paced, not so fast you can't follow but not so slow that everything's repeated. Your words are very thought-out, coherent and well-articulated. The changes in location, the different camera angles and general movement strike a great, attention-retaining balance between boring talking head video and too much movement. The cinematography is immaculate. Tons of very well-composed shots, all in a coherent aesthetic. And that's just all the good stuff your opinion is accompanied by. Your thoughts on this are also great, they're balanced, take multiple perspectives into account and generally, they're like a healthy, nutritious meal for the brain.

One of the things I like most about the RUclips format is that I can watch a 10 minute video for a mental break, then get back to whatever I really should be doing. RUclips is a pain, and you can't rely on an Adsense account as primary income in most cases. You have to branch out into Patreon, selling merch, as well as affiliate links, and sponsors. RUclips revenue itself is a constantly moving target. One of my channels has been monetized and demonetized multiple times, just because of changing rules and requirements. I'll keep making my videos for the love of making videos. I watch my own videos just to relive the experiences. It is pretty cool that we have this place to post and share videos for free. The costs of managing all that data now with 4K can't be cheap.

    I love this concept of watching someone go for a hike while they talk about RUclips's current affairs and what the future may hold. I think as some of the old guard RUclipsrs quit, it may give some of the absolute newbies such as myself hope that we can produce our own value in the creator ecosystem as bad as that sounds.
    I believe the thing that will get you far is just one thing: consistency. My videos are absolute trash since I started a week ago, but I'm chugging along and treating it as a learning experience for myself. I want to be consistent with it and actually develop it into a solid channel.

      You've done a great job of keeping your videos relevant throughout the changes. I stumbled onto your channel last year and bought my first bike a few months ago, weighing a lot of my choices based on your videos. As a consumer of RUclips content since before the Google acquisition, I struggle to see marked improvements other than giving content creators that financial means of being themselves. I worry the changes in the last couple of years take away from that. Either way, I plan to keep watching your videos as they are always wholesome, informative, a better part of what I get to watch each week. Thanks for being you. @@SethsBikeHacks

    Thing is things change over time, and tastes change as well, there’s so much out there to watch and only so much time to do it. I bike as much as i ever did when I was watching a lot of bike content on RUclips, but I don’t watch much bike content anymore, many channels have gotten stale with the same type of content over and over. I did watch for years but moving on to other viewing interests. A lot of it has to do with the pandemic and everybody having so much extra time, but things have turned back to normal and people just don’t have the time to divide up. If anything you did a great job at motivating me to get more into biking, and now I would rather be out biking than watching RUclips, long time viewer since you were in Florida, before Alex had a channel, when bkxc had less than 10k subs. Man like 7, 8 years, time flys.

    I noticed the changes over the last few years I used to do RUclips myself, never got monetized for me it was way for people to see what I photographed and recorded I was working for other types of media at the time websites, magazines, monthlies I was doing automotive and motorcycle content I stopped doing media work right before the pandemic hit I sort of retired I still work part time for a company but no more gigs, events and the like I don't even have a car or motorcycle I ride my bicycle and use public transportation I was looking at how to bicycle videos and that is how I found your channel I don't do MTB or gravel I was into MTB in the early and mid 90's the old rigid frame and 26 inch tire days😆 I still enjoy your videos.
    PS I saw some of my content was being used by other sources to stop that I just deleted all of my videos, I have everything I ever shot or record backed up to hard drives if I ever need that content in the future.
