What’s so inspiring that Ingolf had his first piano lesson at age 14, 2 years older than Kissin was when he played both Chopin piano concertos back to back.
Just goes to show that it is possible to catch up even if you’re a late beginner!
However, he knew the musical language since he was a child, because he played the violin when he was younger, he had musical knowledge. Although it is impressive to get a such award playing the piano from an "advanced age for a professional musician".
When the applause starts before the final cadence, you know it was amazing.
Same place, but 5 years earlier at the end of Mr Blechacz's performance, the applause was greater... it never happened before.

@@loopymomy2532 What a pitty. In my opinion this is the best performance there is of this concerto. And the final applause was well deserved.
When the audience starts applauding you before the piece is even finished you know you've done one hell of a job playing it.
They did the same thing for Rafal Blechacz in 2005.

過去のファイナルの演奏は色んな方のを聴いていますが、こんなに指揮者を見る方は初めてです。オーケストラにぴったり合わせようとする気持ちがすごく伝わる。その気持ちに応える様に指揮者も何度も笑顔でピアニストを見てる。
この指揮者がこんなに笑顔になってるの初めて見たのでびっくりしました。
聴いててとても幸せな気持ちになります。
あとこのピアニストの他の演奏も聴きましたが、どんな曲も自分のものにしてるというか、余裕があって楽しんで弾いてるのが分かるので、聴いてて気持ちいいです。

Slucham co tydzień jak odtrutki wobec codziennego znoju szarego . To jak dążenie do lepszego świata jaki jest za horyzontem . Na szczęście horyzont jest iluzoryczną linią łączącą ziemię z lądem i oddala się w miarę zbliżania . Więc z radością idę wciąż w tym kierunku znając wszystkie nutki. Ingolf Wunder niesłusznie przegrał. Jest dla mnie idealnym wykonawcą utworów Chopina .
I think he knew, at some point in the third movement, that this was an epic performance. You can see the confidence.

One of the touchstones of the literature - all the greats have made legendary performances of it. I'm a fan of Wunder. How great it must have been to have had a performance like this. As good as he is he's probably not had many nights like this one. I listen to it often.
The third movement is unbelievably crisp and clear

I am one of those that is more attracted to his pianism than to that of the first-prize winner. His Andante Spiamato and Grand Polonaise was just mind-boggling, heart- breaking, and tears- dropping.

Unbelievably powerful, beautiful, accurate. Hate to admit that I only recently discovered Wunder, as I investigate stars from prior Chopin Competitions who were not given the First Prize. Does not matter, the enormous talent is his, he will continue to shine even more to our delight!!!

The clear winner
During the last competition I have listened to 9th minor concerts and ended the evening with Ingolf Wunder's interpretation from the final 2010 and been moved to tears once again because it is impossible to play it more beautiful, more joyful, more sensitive and honest. Ingolf Wunder is an amazing artist. This is an epic performance indeed.
Chopin's soul is full with him, can't understand why he didn't win the prize. The whole play was "Chopin", not "Ingolf Wunder".
I think the gist to play Chopin is to think that you are Chopin, not the one just playing the piano.
Many players play themselves instead of Chopin.
Absolutely transcendent performance. So difficult to capture the spirit of this piece. Displaying the virtuosity without losing the gracefulness of the phrases is such a challenge. He was completely in the moment for every passage without losing sight of the larger gestures. Can't believe he didn't win, but his playing is celebrated regardless of what a panel of judges say. Also, can't help but think of Tom Hulce in Amadeus when I see the childlike glee in his face as he plays.
Exactly. Because Chopin demands virtuosic technique but also a very intimate interpretation. My view is that Ingolf Wunder won, the judges refused to recognize that to suit an agenda that has nothing to do with music.. And certainly he has had a distinguished career since. His playing is revelatory.

@@4Topwood Adveeda got better marks at every round of the competition. Wunder came 2nd cause he was not as good on other rounds as with this concerto. Nothing to do with the fact she's a woman, though for once it was a woman, she got her victory tarnished by sexists and people for whom a 2nd prize was not enough for Wunder. It's not an inclusive agenda byt the competition, it's a sexist one by too many people.

His long beautifully legato phrasing, full of nuance and color, reminds me of Gilels's interpretation of this same Concerto. So moving, a pleasure watch.

@@kurasfx1720 dont talk about the politics matters and hope we concentrate on the music topic. The concerto is the final piece and that is played at the final stage. Ingolf was the best concerto playet and score showed his greatness in the total point, however, rules have changed within the compeition period out of sudden and the final result came out for her winning.

I always lose track of the tempo at least once during the whole performance when I listen to this concerto and the only time it didn't happen is with him, also from what I heard he is the only one who knows how to use the sustain pedal without distorting the melody
His performance throughout this competition was just outstanding. I just listened to Yulianna and Triifinov back to back. She was technically excellent and just a safe interpretation. Triifinov was just too fast. It impresses too many people. Chopin’s magnificent melodies and polyphony are lost for all the speed. There’s no time for your brain to absorb the stunning composition. Wunder is brilliant. From the first note - it’s lush, full, singing beautiful, clear, elegant, exciting. And you hear Chopin all the way through the performance. It’s a gorgeous interpretation that still is faithful to Chopin’s own ethos.

It must be heart breaking, and gravely uncomfortable to know that your many years of effort is going down the toilet.
this man gives me hope…He started the piano(after the violin) at age 14, but I mean, piano may not have as much difference musicality as much from violin, but the technique is another world. I myself started at 12 (pretty late) 2 years ago, and sometimes question if i’ll ever be as good as these great pianists despite my late start.
If you listen to the 3rd stage recordings of Wunder and Avdeeva, in my opinion it is nearly impossible to say who played „better“ because it are just 2 very different ways of interpretation and each one has its right to exist. the delicacy how Wunder is painting the different colors in the 3rd movement is not lesser than Avdeevas sophistication of articulation or her polyphonic sculpturing. maybe it would be worth considering (@Chopin Institute) a shared 1st prize for such difficult situations in the future as it‘s already common practice in 2nd prize section, because if both of them are TOP in my opinion it’s unavoidable to pass injustice in the final outcome.

ポーランドでも｢優勝はヴンダーだと思った｣という人がずいぶんいたようです。

Yes, of course, this concert could not possibly be played any better. Mr. Wunder is SUPERB, but he comes from the "wrong" ethnic background. He is not Polish, not Russian, not Jewish, nor is he Asian, so how could "they" POSSIBLY have ever even CONSIDERED letting him win? I know that's an ugly thing to say, but I feel deep in my bones that it must be true. Van Cliburn's 1958 victory in Moscow, must have been a FLUKE, and then look how shabbily he was treated ever afterward. Avdeeva is an excellent player, but she is physically unattractive, and has a rather grim, too businesslike platform manner that totally lacks charisma. Unlike Ingolf Wunder's infectious enthusiasm for his task and full-blooded, unabashed "glorying in the flower," there is no evidence of JOY in Avdeeva's playing. Yes of COURSE Ingolf Wunder should have won. But the world is what it is, and always will be, I'm afraid. Have you heard Aljosa Jurinic yet? If not, you're in for a treat.
Also, females haven't won for decades. They would like to have a female winner to show political correctness. I strongly support gender or racial equality but I hate any kind of gender or racial influence in a competition. In my opinion, the same thing happened in 2017 Oscar, too (Moonlight won because of its racial background). Isn't letting the minority win a kind of bias itself?
Oh, there's also another thing worth mentioning. One of the jury in the competition is once Mr. Wunder's teacher. Maybe they gave him 2nd because they didn't want to be considered as flavoring a jury's student.

The winner was and is Mrs. Yulianna Avdeeva because she deserved it. It was Martha Argerich, who was a member in the jury and she has learned how to use her ears and intellect.

@@_ydhdh9340Many of the competitors deserved to win because they are all wonderful in different ways. Him and Yulianna were both amazing, but there could only be one winner and the jury liked Yulianna better. That’s just how competitions are. But both of them have successful careers and global recognition, and not just them, but many other great competitors too in this competition. So in a way, everyone was a winner.

In 2010, Polish politicians died in the Smolensk crash, and at first everyone thought Putin had killed them, so everyone was scared. After the proclamation of the results, the audience started whistling. It has never been like this in the history of the competition.
The best for this concerto: Kissin, Wunder, Zimerman, Trifonov
I would put Zimerman first and Seong-Jin Cho somewhere in the middle
EDIT: Nowadays I would put Zimerman first and Blechacz second.
