Lots of retriever training wisdom from Pat Burns. THANK YOU! Pat Burns on Land Marks: 10:00 design of momma/poppa marks 37:00 Pat explains primary and secondary selection 44:55 Pat explains when to handle and when to have the gunner help. Here the dog handled on second mark because he took the wrong route, and dog is recalled on last memory bird and gunner becomes visible to help the dog. 47:00 Pat explains why it is so important to watch the dog, not the marks. 1:01:20 Pat demos how to "close the door" to influence the dog left (push), then silently pull for the right hand mark. 1:23:00 Pat discusses handling on marks..typicaly handle to correct the route such as cheating, suction, wind drift, switching...do not handle in the area of the fall. 1:30:00 Pat demos how gunner can help an inexperienced retriever by stepping in the direction of the fall 1:32:50 Bird-in-mouth on singles to start mechanics of memory birds 1:40:00 Pat explains have the retriever wait to be sent on the go bird...do not allow butt lifting in anticipation of being sent. 1:49:20 The importance of SIT when trying to push influence the retriever. 1:51:45 Sent too quick, so need to recall to focus on correct line 2:25 Pat talks about a routine to get a dog to go on a memory bird dog forgot and may not go.
Excellent! Pat Burns on Land Blinds: Land Blinds: 2:29:55 Set up for 4 land blinds (55 to 195 yards) 2:35:00 Pat talks about the importance of sequence in multiple blind retrieves in training...increase the comittment to a factor like cross-wind 2:37:45 Pat discusses the importance of knowing exactly where the blind is while waiting in the holding blind, on double-blind be a proactive handler setting up for perfect spinal alignment while the retriever is returning from the first blind. 2:39:00 "Voice is gas pedal, silent casts as steering wheel" 2:42:00 Verbal cast with wind, silent cast into the wind (effect as undercast with wind, overcast into wind) 3:00:00 Pat talks about judge's ideal line to the blind and keyhole blinds to challenge the route to the bumper. 3:08:00 Pat demonstrates how to use voice after a cast to punch a dog and timing difference is sight versus sound (cast versus verbal). 3:11:30 Pat talks about casting momentum and silent casting 3:12:30 Contrasts for more in-depth language to the retriever (verbal versus silent, hand versus no-hand, soft versus loud sends) 3:13:40 Freezing on casts 3:26:15 Pat talks about training a dog with the problem of a crooked sit
More excellent retriever wisdom from Pat Burns! 3:37:45 Water marks/water blind 3:38:35 Down the shore mark push to influence left into water 3:43:55 Water blind designed to finish with the greatest commitment...on and off point. 3:46:00 Pat talks about handling retrievers off points...defensive handling to avoid dog wrapping around point and out of sight. 3:56:40 Pat talks about how most dogs will cheat water early in the training season...good to start with cheating singles 4:02:00 Pat explains priority 1 on water blinds is to get in the water, therefore he does not like to call back...message should be get in, stay in water...more important than the line in training 4:39:45 Pat has gunner help a confused dog that would not take multiple back casts on water blind 4:51:00 Show-me blind for inexperienced dog 4:56:45 Pat talks about handler false motion which may send the wrong message to the retriever
You should consider not filming the bird being thrown after the test dog. Where it lands without the context of how the dog behaved while the bird was being thrown is much less valuable especially in the context of a seminar, the handler and Pat are watching the dog as the birds are coming out that's what I want to watch as I hear Pat's commentary on how the dog is running and handled. Hope this comes across as a polite suggestion, very grateful for this to be available!
