- ALL ABOUT MADRID METRO | Vlog 2019
If you know me, you know I hate driving with a passion. I also hate owning a car even more. While driving may be a necessity in some places, I can assure you, in Madrid - it’s not.
▹
The Madrid Metro was originally established in 1919 and had only 8 stations. Here we are, 100 years later, and the Metro now reaches 12 municipalities in Madrid, where over 75 percent of the residents live less than 600 meters away from a station and has over 2.3 million people traveling daily!
▹
If you’re coming to visit Madrid, studying abroad, or simply staying for an extended period of time, you definitely want to get your hands on an ‘Abono’ ASAP. If you’d benefit from having a monthly card which gives you full access to all forms of Madrid public transportation for 30 days, the price depends on your age and what zone of the city you want access to. The “normal” card is for ages 26-64 and covers Zone A (city center), for the price of 54,60€ per month. The “youth” card, which is ages 26 and under, is priced at 20€ for ALL zones.
▹
If it’s your first time getting a monthly unlimited Metro card, you need to set up an appointment first. Visit tarjetatransportepublico.crtm.es and click Solicitud Tarjeta Transporte Público. Then select which card you wish to obtain and pick a metro office near you, date, and time. On the day of your appointment, bring the three required documents and your metro card will be given to you by the time you’re finished.
▹
The three required documents you will need to get your metro card are:
• Application document
• A standard passport sized photo (which you can get at the photo booths in most metro stations, including Sol)
• An original copy of either your, EU ID, Spanish residency card, or passport

Can we take a minute to applaud the video quality 👍
Haryor Victor haha, aww thank you!! 🙏
Thank you so much for this helpful video. I will be in Madrid for the first time in about a month and this was so helpful. Once again, thank you.
Such an awesome video Kirsten!
I love this metro. Clean, organized, easy to use and on time!
This was such a helpful video because planning to use the public transportation was making me so nervous. Your instructions were so clear though, and your video quality was amazing. Please make more videos about Madrid and yourself!!
Iam going to Madrid tomorrow and this video just literally fell in my lap, amazing job Kirsten, thank you!
Renčo Mulinka thank you!! enjoy it😍😍
I love how you say Madrrid! I love the city's Metro system.
Haha, thank you! I do too 😍
Amazing video! Thank you, it was very helpful and of course enjoyable!!
Loved your video!!!! I’ll be in Madrid in April and sooo excited. I’m also like you in the fact that I don’t drive and I’m glad that I don’t because I am a walker. It’s easy when you’re from New York like me but even if I wasn’t I’d still be on public transportation. Cause you get to see a lot more. Your video was very helpful as far as the transportation with the buses and trains. I’m definitely gonna get one of those cards once I get there. Thanks again 😊
Thank you for this video Kirsten ! My husband and I are about to move to Spain for school and neither of us have ever been to Spain, and I personally have never gone to Europe before so I’ve been doing a ton or research and watching RUclips videos. This video is so helpful ! Hope to see more Madrid videos ! :)
Thank you, well done and super helpful! Love the humor
EXCELLENT VIDEO, CONGRATS!!!! from MADRID
An interesting fact is that unlike other road and rail traffic in Spain that has right hand running, the Madrid Metro has left hand running.
Why? Because when the first sections opened in 1919 they emulated the road traffic on the streets above which at the time drove on the left. Although Madrid switched to road traffic driving on the right in 1924, as the Madrid Metro kept expanding over the following years they stuck to left hand running on all lines and still do to this day.
Hello Kirsten, thx a lot for this Video, I will visit Madrid in the end of mai and just needed such a explanation. greets from switzerland
Excellent video, very informative and great quality. You are also a very beautiful woman. This metro system reminds me of when I went to Paris but cleaner and a little more modern. I loved the ease of using the Paris metro and being able to get around. Living in LA I can relate to the need of having to drive and it can get a bit annoying. If you can try to make more vlogs related to cafe culture, restaurants and common everyday life in Madrid that is different from the US. Madrid is definitely my next city to visit in Europe and I would even consider living there being a Spanish speaker. Keep up the good work! :)
I'm visiting Madrid alone for the first time without a car (getting there by train) and you helped make the metro less complicated for me. I didn't know there was an app which is good to know. As a sidenote I totally agree that owning a car is just more stress and problems. Again thanks for the video!
I'm happy to have helped! Hope you enjoy Madrid! 😊
Beautiful spectacles, I plan to visit Madrid from LA in mid March.
Thank you so much this was useful for me trying to visit Madrid
Well done I would like to know more about the connections to the airport and maybe a bit on taxis keep up he good work.
Great informative video ! Thanks !
Bravo! Just what we needed. Thank you!
You are so welcome! 🙌

Idk if you’ll see this late but great video, I’m going to Madrid in 3 weeks
Love this. Are you going to continue making videos as such about Madrid? I am moving their soon :)
Nice Vlog! 👍😀
I'm moving there in a few weeks, I don't know spanish and I have so much anxiety for taking the metro and the buses because I'm not sure what to expect, this made me feel so much better thank you so much for posting
Great tips, thanks
Nice one and very beautiful
Waiting to meet you soon
Ka conuna Madrid Spain
Thank you for this
Thank you for uploading informative content. 🤪
Going to Madrid in August 2022 and this information is very helpful. I live in Miami Florida and she is 100% correct about the transportation system here in Miami; It is not all that great; a car is need to go just about anywhere. Glad to hear that Madrid has such an efficient transportation system.
Just back from a trip to Madrid. The metro is magic. Clean, efficient & extremely accessible. We bought 4 day tourist passes, and that was us sorted. Good luck and enjoy a brilliant city!
Hey Jay we are here right now and the busses are great. Will test the subway today.
I really want to go there! 😭💔 More videos please?
Great video :P
Thank you so much for this video , really helpful
Glad it was helpful! 🙌
I like the metro from Madrid very much.
Awesome video! Do we have to tap the card while getting out the bus too?
Thank you for the info.
Hi, thanks for the informative video. It’s really helpful. I’m travelling soon to Madrid and am a little confused as which would be the best budget option.
I am staying for 2 nights in Madrid and have my flight on 3rd day morning and would want to use public transportation. On the second day, I’m visiting La Rozas village. Can you please suggest
I thought this was AOC for a second, lol. I’m going to Madrid next month so this video was informative. Thanks.
Haha, that's funny! Hope you had a great time in my second home ♥️
@@kirstenrincon I had an excellent time. Thanks!
love your info and advice im there for first time september solo traveler. normaly Asia
Haha "late birds" its night owls. Reminds me of the time I said "dust rabbits" instead of dust bunnies.
Grazie Kirsten!!✨
Prego! 💫
Hello - I stumbled upon this video tday. Thank you. Do they have a train that goes from/ to Madrid and Barcelona ? I'm a new subcriber.
hello, when taking the bus do we need also to tap/validate the card when leaving? or only once when boarding. thanks!
I like your stuff Budy .. I'm also Vlogger in Pakistan
Love from Pakistan keep it up
As a transit fan, I have to say this is a good overview video. I've been watching some other Madrid metro items, and am curious to know whether what I thought I saw is really true, and that is, is this system powered by an overhead power *rail* , vs. overhead power wires, or ground third rail? It *appears* that way to me, but do tell me if I am wrong. But if I am right, that would be really unique, and a first for a subway that I have seen. Also, does Madrid have any surface-level light rail or tram lines?
Hey, I know it's quite late but as someone from Madrid I didn't know the way or trains work is unique :)) Also, yeah we do. It's called Renfe and it is actually one of the best train systems in the world, albeit it tends to get a little bit late sometimes at very busy hours. Never seen a tram here in Spain tho, everyone uses buses, though don't take my word for that as that's just in my experience :))
I lived near Madrid from 1961 to 1964. I rode the Metro all the time. The fare was 1 p!. Favorite station was Chamberi - which no longer really exists. Favorite line was Suburbano - now parts of line 10 and 5.
You could pay the 1 p. ride anywhere on the system. A teenager's dream.
Great video but what do you do if you can.t see the screen to buy a ticket
Do they sell 24hrs day pass ??? I’m just wondering because I’m going soon to Madrid on a solo trip and that would be convenient. Thanks for the awesome video
muy bien felicidades
hey! do we need a metro card for every city like one for Valencia, one for Madrid or is there one card to use to tavel across spain? :)
5:55 what? UNLIMITED pass for only €20per month??! Crazy cheap
Yes because you live in USA :VVVVV
Only for people under 26. Above that age goes from 60 increasing 120 depending on the zones.
@@fernanz2345 I live in Finland though... and americans use cars not public transit (cars are better anyway)
@@yeahnoway111 depends,If you live in a congested city, using public transport is much better than using cars. But in rural areas, life without cars is unthinkable.(speaking generally)
i am in Madriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid.. great people
Are you from América? Do you think is the Chicago Elevated train better than the New York 's network? ??
Which is the American city with the best transportation from your point of view? ?
Thank you! Regards from Málaga
Question, the same card you used for the Metro is good for the bus?
Saludos
I have a question, i am traveling with my husband and my 4 year old, do i need to swipe the card for my 4 year old as well? Or is it just for the adults
7:14 Hahaha i laught so hard with that part because that is the bus that i always take to get home, i did that race thousan of times in my life and the bus is always waiting in that point for a little bit. it is funny to see that im not the only stupid one that runs for nothing
robert111k jajaja ojala! muchas gracias 😊
Please, more videos
One of the things I LOVE about being in Miami or any US city is HAVING A CAR!
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊

❤❤❤❤❤
Not only the Metro and the Bus systems of Madrid are amazing but also the entire Kingdom of Spain and their entire Europe railway system connections which is excellent., And by the way, no other European country can beat Spain's massive, extensive, well-maintained, clean and aesthetic Autopista and Autopia freeways. It's the world's third largest after the U.S. and China.
I couldn't agree with you more! They may not have it all figured out, but they are doing AMAZING in the transportation realm 🤣 🙌
What are the apartments like?
“It stays running till 2:00 am”
NYC Subway riders: and....?
But seriously, I liked the video, would really like to visit Madrid and ride the subway one day!
10-journey. Is it for everything or only rail?
does metro card take you on the buses also
I’m from Pakistan and visiting Madrid next month. I want to know that this machine accept any bank mastercard or not?
Hi
Does the bono work on all buses too or just the metro?
On buses as well! 🙌
Hi Kirsten. Thank You.Good video. I will be in beautiful Madrid end of May for the football final. I assume i can buy a 5 day metro pass at the airport.
Thanks! & yes, you can purchase a 5-day metro pass at the metro station at the airport 😊Enjoy the final!!
@@kirstenrincon Hi Kirsten. Thank you for the reply. The football final is just going to get better. Liverpool are through to the final. See you in Madrid Hala Madrid.
Lets say that to get to x you need to take the first line for two stops and then change to the second line for three stops, will the 10 viajes card charge you for two viajes or just one? Also, what’s the timeframe for a single trip? Thank you!!
just one! so you can technically take as many trips within the metro lines with one trip charge as long as you don't leave the metro. once you exit, you're gonna have to pass the card again to get back in, which would count as another trip. hope this helps!! :)
Hi Thanks for the video. I'm going to Madrid soon. I have to transfer to 2 trains to get from the Airport to Lavapies. Do I have to pay for each ride? And do you know a cheaper way to get to Lavapies? Thanks
The train i think is in terminal 4..u can get the airport bus to atocha for 5euro , and from atocha to lavapies is like 12 min to walk ..sorry for my english
¡Hola!
Ojalá me puedas ayudar.
Kirsten Rincon ¡Muchísimas gracias por la respuesta! Me ha ayudado mucho. ¡Un saludo!
May i know what is the most cheapest ticket for 3 days ?
Thanks in advance
Buena suerte!
It is really my dream to visit Spain, I'm from the Philippines BTW
Just a remark: the red card is not called "abono" but "bono", "bonotransporte" or simply "tarjeta de transporte". "Abonos" are the ones you buy for unlimited use within a period of time, usually a month. I´m from Madrid.
thanks for the useful info. One question: Do students get discount on the tourist ticket for 5 days? Greetings BA
Hi! The University trimestral transport card allows students only from universities outside the centre of Madrid to avail of an unlimited amount of journeys to and from their campus, for a fixed price. The universities on the list include: Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, Autónoma de Cantoblanco, Carlos III de Madrid, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and all Erasmus students.
And unfortunately, no you can't combine this card with the tourist card! :(
@@kirstenrincon hi Kirsten, thank you for the answer. Greetings Bart
Is it possible to take unlimited bus pass in malaga
What is the cheapest way to use transportation for 3 days in Madrid and Barcelona as well ?
Cheapest way has definitely got to be the metro/bus transportation system! You can't beat it.
Hi Kirsten. I am a college student about to graduate, I am planing to move to Spain once I graduate but I don’t know where or how to start the process. I am a U.S. citizen (us born), o.no one from my family is from Spain, can you help me?
Hi , I am traveling with my family. Can I just buy one metro card and swipe multiple times for each of my family members ? Or do they each need a separate metro card ? Also my son is 11 years old , does he need a ticket too ?
Hi! Yes, you can purchase one metro card and use it for everyone if you’d like - just be sure to keep recharging it. There are also special tourist day passes you can buy that allow you to pay one fee with unlimited travels for the days. But those are only available to purchase per person. And yes, all children 7 years old and up must have a ticket to ride! Hope this helps :)
Kirsten Rincon great thank you very much
Why?
Why didn’t you keep uploading videos?
I have been so busy with work, trying to grow my freelance business! 😭 But I'm going to try to get two more videos up before the end of the year! Let me know if you have any suggestions 😊
Nice video. Thanks so much. Leave your hair alone, gurl.😊
You should have mentioned prices for getting around on the Metro. This would be helpful to travelers.....
@2:28 @5:43
Hi Kirsten, thank you for your video! I’m going to Madrid really soon to pick up my grandma at the airport and I’m arriving a day earlier than her, which I’m really nervous cause is my first time traveling on my own haha. I do speak Spanish though and figured out the metro would be the easiest and fastest route. Now, I have some burning questions and I hope you can help me: Would I need to get a card for my own and one from my grandma as well? Or is one enough?. I also read that you need to buy the ‘airport’ ticket whenever you’re going there and it expires the same day - do you need this ticket both when you’re arriving and leaving the airport, or only when you have to arrive to the airport?
Hope to hear from you soon! And again thank you so much for the video, I’m less scared about traveling on my own now :)
Hi Rebeca! Yes, you would need to get 2 separate Metro cards for both you and your grandmother. And yes, you need a ticket for each route TO and FROM the airport, which will cost additional charges but you can still buy these at any metro kiosk. If you need additional help they also have offices in each station with a person nearby to answer any other questions you may have!
Thank you for the kind words! You will do great on your first solo travel. Good luck! xx
@@kirstenrincon Hi Kristen! Actually, you don't need 2 separate Metro Cards. If you use the "Tarjeta Multi" (that is the red one you show in the video), is not personal, meaning that you can charge different tickets in it (up to 4), for example, the "10 viajes" ticket you could use it for 10 people.
Also, I have just discovered your channel, I do really like your videos!! Thank you very much.
Hello, Ive been wanting to make a change in my life and I know moving to a different place would be good for me. Something about Spain gets my attention. I dont know anybody in spain but I know spanish and have some money saved. Is it crazy to move there with out a job and a place to sleep? How hard is it to get a job over there?
I have resturant expirence. Once I get a job I could get a motel to sleep and start building up from there.
@XvX XvX you thinking about moving to spain?
@XvX XvX from where?
@XvX XvX make that move
@@reyesrevenge4222 Hey! If you need any help with anything related with coming to Spain, feel free to contact me. I live here in Spain & I love helping people.
What legal things do you have to do if you want to move to Spain?
It depends on your immigration status. If you have dual citizenship, then essentially nothing. You're good.
If you don't, then a tourist visa is good for three months. Other options might be a student visa or a work visa. Your best shot would be to go as a tourist and try to find a job and change your status like that.
hi can u do those 7 day pass? thanks
No, you can buy minimum 10 rides and use them within 7 days if you or more. They don't expire.
@@kirstenrincon excellent thank you for the reply can't wait to be there ✌️
Ok
Im in Madrid right now and I can say one bad thing about the metro: It has the worst signings I have ever seen. Been in many cities and Madrid has the most confusing signings. Lets say you want the metro going to SOL. The signs are like: Go south and east to find it. It happened twice that we got the Metro to the other direction. Still didnt find the solution to how to figure out which direction it goes. The monitores write big: the next meteo comes in 3min“. The question I have is: where, for gods sake?!
Milano, Tokio, Osaka, toronto all very easy, but Madrid gave and still giving me a hard time. You cant follow the colors (which woulf be a logical thing to do). The metro is big and its true that you can go anywhere. But easy? Hell no for tourists. I bet im not the only one. Also everything is ONLY written in Spanish. The city itself is awesome, very busy and very beautiful!
The metro needs to have English announcements
Can two people share one card?
Yes! Multiple people can share the red multi-card which is rechargeable at every ticket machine :)
You are so beautiful ❤❤❤❤
