      Exactly, it’s not like WW2 was 500 years ago or something, there are literally still people alive today that fought in the war, to think that sort of insidious ultra nationalist sentiment is just gone in Japan is ridiculous especially since the US basically did nothing to stamp it out and punish the perpetrators of the war and the many horrific crimes against humanity they committed against China, Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, etc.

    I think a major thing you are all missing here is that Japanese do not see Okinawans as Japanese, which is why so many of those crimes done by US military personnel are tolerated and why Japan so readily militarizes these islands, to the death toll during the US invasion of Okinawa. Japanese forces literally used Okinawans as human shields, and Marines really didn't care to check for civilian casualties or distinguish, all Japanese to me. There's even gun cam footage of US aircraft just strafing civilians for the hell of it.
    Okinawans can't really say no to any of these bases which is why those people seem kinda avoidant and they let out their opinions as "oh I heard some...". Okinawan gov representation is really just for show.

    • @Enorbs96
      @Enorbs96 27 дней назад

      The natives were also of course fed tons of propaganda by the Japanese about savage Americans coming to slaughter them all so they were in many cases too fearful of the Marines to come out of hiding. The Japanese used massive interconnected tunnel/ cave systems to fight out of so when Marines finally made it to them it was basically kill or be killed.
      Yes there were Marines killing civilians purposely but many of them were disgusted by that behavior and tried to spare civilians whenever possible. I understand the cruelty shown by much of the American force but it's also fair to consider the fog of war over men thrust into an island hopping campaign against a fierce enemy who slaughtered their friends viciously over and over.
      These were exhausted, traumatized people who found the bodies of their comrades often mutilated or rigged with booby traps. The Japanese weren't just a tough enemy, they were an intelligent force of survivalists who refused to go down in shame and utilized brutish cruelty in a calculated way. Battlefield fatigue and PTSD weren't fully understood and US forces like others of the time were sent into hell repeatedly until many broke mentally. To survive meant to become a truly disconnected killer and those who couldn't do that sadly became casualties either physically or mentally.

      People caring about the bases is very overblown. Was a major issue like 30 years ago , and you get small protests every couple of years. Okinawa is particularly destitute and has a culture of just giving up and looking down on people for having ambitions. Who do you think you are kind of thing. They uniquely just don’t care because of how beat down they are. They are incredibly desperate and an easy population to rapidly militarize. The American bases are there because it is an economic dead zone that already relied on tourism. Same reason they pick places in America.

      Nothing triggers me more than people talking about the Byzantine Empire. It never existed. Every Byzantine emperor called himself Roman, they spoke Latin, they used Roman coins, they were Roman. The Byzantine Empire was literally invented by a German historian who wanted to claim that Christian Europeans - who had seized the Western part of the Roman Empire - were the "true" continuation of the Roman legacy, instead of the Muslims who actually finished off the Roman Empire. He renamed it the Byzantine Empire just so he could be like "The Muslims didn't conquer the Romans, they conquered the Byzantines" despite the fact that a Byzantine Empire never existed.

    As a legitimate response to the islands not being important; they are if you’re thinking warfare strategy. Each island, especially if large and empty, could operate as a forward operating base, to launch weaponry and troops from. If taken and then fortified, you could make a strong forward operating base, assuming you held the territory long enough. So it’s kinda important to make sure an enemy invading force doesn’t use said islands against you.

    Btw Shinto did in fact exist when Mongolia went sicko mode, we don't know exactly when it formed (which in all fairness, it's still almost just several different religions) but it was sometime from 400 BCE to 400 CE

    • @johnmckiernan2176
      @johnmckiernan2176 26 дней назад +12

      The term 'Shinto' 神道 is a neologism from the era of the Tokugawa shogunate, used to describe a wide array of Japanese folk religious beliefs which had, by that time, become entirely enveloped (with a few exceptions, such as the cult at Ise) into Mahayana Buddhism, and were later forcible separated under the Meiji emperors. The idea that it is a coherent religion only comes in the same Edo Period, with the so-called Nihonjin-ron scholars (nativist Japanese scholars interested in ridding Japan of Chinese influence). Which is ironic, because a) they drew on Chinese Buddhist temple architecture to design shinto shrines and borrowed from Chinese Buddhism and Daoism to formalise Shinto rituals and b) Those exact same Chinese characters are used to describe Chinese folk religion and the worship of the original Chinese pantheon. The term originally meant polytheism, essentially, not 'a systematic Japanese native religion'. Many of the "Shinto" kami are thinly disguised or openly borrowed Buddhist, Central Asian and even Hindu deities, and the creation of State Shinto as a distinct religion was a travesty, a fascistic revisionist ploy employed by religious cynics to portray the Japanese ethnicity as superior - divine, in fact - based on the idea that the (mythical) first Emperor, and purported father of all Japanese people, was the son of the Sun kami Amaterasu. The idea of being a living kami, though, is somewhat diminished when one notes that there are a purported 12 million kami in the Japanese folk religion, that most people in the Japanese archipelago were forced into the Yamato state (the state that became Japan) in the early medieval period and that there is no evidence they believed in such human incarnations of kami prior to this political fact. Source; my first class MA in East Asian Art History, specialising in Japanese religious art. I also lived over there and speak and read the language.

    42:47 Shinto was certainly invented at the time, and people did claim that the typhoons were a source of divine intervention. Imperial state shinto, the "branch" or sect responsible for propagating war crimes in WWII, around 750 years later wasn't as present outside of the capital of Kamakura, and the old capital in Kyoto. However, the Kamakura shogunate used the typhoons as a source of legitimation which was tied to Shintoism as a religion, especially given the fact that the shogun was a title given by an emperor, the divine figure in Shintoism at the time.

    48:44 I mean WW2 is a good example of how not militarizing can result in conflict if a belligerent neighbor like Nazi Germany wants to take advantage of a lack of military strength for its own gain. The reason they invaded Poland was because A) Polands military was quite weak and outdated, and B) they didn't think France and the UK would actually declare war. The idea that simply not militarizing will prevent conflict is just wishful thinking. Sure it can, but it depends on the situation. In some situations winding down militarization can cool things down, but in others can just lead to further aggression from third parties that wish to exploit the lack of military strength.

I'm a massive weeb & I do watch many Japan based creators, but for some reason, I just couldn't get myself to enjoy Abroad in Japan content. I even avoided any content he was featured in like the plague 😭 I couldn't exactly put a finger on why I disliked him so much, but I just chalked it up to his "vibes" not matching content creators I usually enjoy watching. This could be a coincidence or some form of intuition or maybe me picking up on subtle things he said/did without consciously being aware of it... But regardless, his comment truly was a "aha!" moment for me. I wasn't surprised. It was more like "yeah makes sense he'd say that."

    I don’t understand the argument for Hasan here in terms of Taiwan… is it just “Oh it’s pretty close just let China have Taiwan so nobody has to go to war” like, it seems like the same argument he has with Russia where he was basically like “oh well Crimea and the Donbas has lots of Russian ethnic people so just let Russia have them and Ukraine should just not do anything to defend its sovereignty cause Russia won’t invade further…” until they invaded further after he decried news of the impending invasion as “State Department propaganda” until it wasn’t.
    Like, no, we should just let China take Taiwan, we shouldn’t just let Russia take Ukraine or keep any of the territory they annexed just to prevent war. War sucks, and it sucks that people and civilians have to die to protect what is just and moral and right but sometimes it’s justified and China threatening to take Taiwan because of some perceived US threat because we have soldiers and bases around them is pretty insane, maybe if China behaved themselves and stopped aggression on their neighbors then the US wouldn’t have to continue to build their forces there in case conflict breaks out to defend their allies. And yes, someone should be allowed to have a global military presence to prevent or deter conflict and bolster their allied countries defenses, I don’t see why that’s such a big threat unless they’re doing something fucked up and think that they’re maybe a threat because of that in which case maybe they should be threatened.
