First commercial vapour refrigeration was in Australia in the 1850 and 1860s. Australia was in fact well ahead of the rest of the world for many decades in this regard. Not surprising though, Australia is a very hot country, and lacked a decent ice industry. This made vapour refrigeration much more economically viable at the time. unsurprisingly, Australia also had a much faster uptake of heat pumps for air-conditioning (which work similar to how refrigerators work), something America was a bit slow on taking up. It is a great example of how the environment drives innovation and technology.
It's amazing to think about how they managed to keep food fresh without modern technology.
